Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Clara Rugaard and Til Schweiger lead the international cast of “Desperate Journey,” a newly-announced thriller set in the burlesque world of 1940s Paris.
The film — which has now wrapped production — comes from Emblem Pictures, and was written by two-time Oscar nominee Michael Radford (best known for directing 1994 global sensation “Il Postino”) and directed by Emmy winner Annabel Jankel (“Tell It to the Bees”).
Produced by Warren Derosa and Zsofi Kendel, “Desperate Journey” is based on the true story of Freddie Knoller (played by Tønnesen), a young man forced to flee Vienna as Nazi hysteria takes hold. Knoller’s captivating story has been widely recognized around the world and he was honored by the late Queen Elizabeth.

Many fans wondered why Mat Cauthon actor Barney Harris was replaced by Dònal Finn in Season 2 of Amazon Prime Video's The Wheel of Time.
Mat Cauthon was one of the main characters of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson's The Wheel of Time series of fantasy novels.
After those books began to be adapted into the TV show of the same name, it looked as though Mat would also be a major name in that as well.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains light spoilers for “The Wheel of Time” Season 2.]
If you’ll spare a weary critic a moment of vulnerability, I must admit: I do not understand “The Wheel of Time.” Not enough, anyway, though not for lack of trying. I’ve now seen the first season of Amazon Prime Video’s fantasy adaptation twice. I’ve read the Wiki pages as well as reviews from my fellow critics. I’ve screened the available Season 2 episodes, while poking around in recaps and social media reactions. The books remain unopened, but I’ve gone over their synopses and summaries, so I feel I’ve done my due diligence. I have given “The Wheel of Time” a spin, a fair shake, and a hard look.
Nevertheless, I don’t get whatever is going on here. In Season 2, Mom and Dad are fighting, but I can’t quite pinpoint how Lan (Daniel Henney) “failed” Moiraine (Rosamund Pike...

Created by Rafe Judkins, the fantasy series is based on a novel series of the same name by Robert Jordan with Brandon Sanderson. The Wheel of Time follows the story of Moiraine, a member of a magical organization. She takes five young people on a perilous journey, believing that one of them is a reincarnation of the Dragon. A very powerful individual who is destined to save the world or destroy it.

[This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] After more than a year and a half, the fantastical hit based on Robert Jordan’s epic novels is finally rolling in for a second round. The Wheel of Time Season 2 picks up shortly after Season 1’s finale, and the drama’s heroes are now in different fascinating, far-flung spots. Rand (Josha Stradowski)—the humble villager who was revealed to be the reincarnated “Dragon Reborn,” destined to either save or sink mankind—has gone into hiding after his battle with an acolyte (Fares Fares) of the villainous Dark One. And Rand’s beloved Egwene (Madeleine Madden) is training, along with her reluctant fellow villager Nynaeve (Zoë Robins), to join the Aes Sedai, an all-female order that controls magic. Their roguish friend Mat is holed up with a most unlikely captor, and hulking pal ...

Note: These interviews took place before the SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14.
The dangers of the quest unfolding in The Wheel of Time aren’t just about defeating the Dark One; there’s also the question of whether the Dragon Reborn will be a champion for good or evil. Similarly, the others in Rand Al’Thor’s life must choose their path or have it chosen for them. Several of those who portray these other destiny-driven characters on the show spoke with us about the fate that steers their lives in season 2.
Perhaps few characters felt the battle between good and evil within themselves more than Mat Cauthon, portrayed in season 2 by Dónal Finn. Having been corrupted by the tainted dagger he acquired in Shadar Logoth, Mat now has some decisions to make during his recovery. “He has to turn inward and get reflective and be introspective about the behaviors...

Plenty of fans of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time like to pick Mat Cauthon as their favorite character in the overall story, particularly as the lovable rogue became more and more pivotal as the novels unfolded. That appears to be the same case for Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time series, which premieres its second season on Friday, Sept. 1 (with the first three episodes).
The end of Season 1 left Mat Cauthon (then played by Barney Harris) in a very strange and troubling place: on the run and separated from the rest of the core cast. Since then,...

This article contains spoilers for The Wheel of Time.
Although the first season of The Wheel of Time departed in many ways from The Eye of the World, the Robert Jordan novel upon which it is based, the elements it included and left out give us some clues as to where the series might be headed in its already renewed second season. Despite proving that its willing to change the plot quite drastically, spoiler-free guesses can be made about what might show up from the books given the way showrunner Rafe Judkins and his writers have made their decisions so far.
A Love Interest for Rand
The Wheel of Time made slightly more out of the romantic feelings between Rand and Egwene in season one than what appeared in the books, and that’s okay. The dramatic tension provided a way in the finale to illustrate Rand’s ability to...

One of the central appeals of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time is how the late author managed to make his fantasy world feel both huge and small at the same time. It’s a tricky feat Prime Video’s adaptation struggledto pull off during its first two episodes.
But with Episode 3, titled “A Place of Safety,” the showrunners manage to convey that epic yet intimate scope using a technique I honestly didn’t expect to see. The best shows, fantasy or otherwise, know when to expand their horizons and become about something deeper and wider than the original...

Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time debuted on Friday with three episodes to make a first impression. After watching Episode 1, did you decide if you will stick with the already-renewed adaptation?
Let’s start with the undeniable positives. The series premiere, titled “Leavetaking,” is a thoroughly efficient rundown of what this series wants to be and who we should probably care about the most. The opening moments make the stakes clear. There are Aes Sedai, female wizards with extraordinary power, who roam this expansive world in search of dangerous men who can use the “One Power” but lose their minds as a result.

Rosamund Pike leads the way in what promises to be an exciting season of magic and adventure.
The premieres start and end with a bang and promise to bring excitement in the near future.
However, the production seems to falter a bit in The Wheel of Time Season 1 Episode 1.
I hate to speak ill of it because the story and acting were superb.
The special effects left a lot to desire.
The magic was better than the falling rocks but still looked unimpressive against the sweeping setting.
The plot drags heavily in its confusing and unclear world-building but picks up again at the end with a tense battle.
The effects of the battle lead well into the two following premiere episodes and make for an all-around good first set.
This first episode serves well as a first foray into the world of the Wheel but also lacks a lot of essential explanations.

“I’m not one of those showrunners who is like, ‘this is my vision and everyone hop on board’,” Rafe Judkins declares about how he approached bringing the epic fantasy series to life. “I think that television is at its best when everyone who comes to the table is lifting it up,” he says. “When you have that and you have people creatively invested, then you can really make something that feels special and you feel people’s passion for it on the screen.”

Production designer Ondrej Nekvasil was not familiar with Robert Jordan‘s “The Wheel of Time” fantasy novel series and only read the first book of the 14-volume series after joining the Amazon Prime Video adaptation, which premieres Friday, Nov. 19. “At some point, I stopped reading the books and I’m just focusing on the scripts and working with the scripts mostly,” he tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Production Design panel (watch above). “There was no additional materials connected with the books because there was not like illustrations or an illustrator involved with the books. And the only kind of visual thing was the map of the world, which was created by Robert Jordan, the writer, and that was it. After that, there was fan art, but we never followed the fan art.”

When you play the game to be the next Game of Thrones, you win, or you waste a whole lot of money.
You remember Game of Thrones, right? Epic fantasy drama adapted from a beloved (but still unfinished) book series, kicked off a new blockbuster era in television in terms of both scale and audience size, then alienated most of its audience by the end? Ring a bell?

For all its intricate world building, “The Wheel of Time” tends to spin smoothest if you don’t examine its pieces too closely. Take the logo, for instance. Circling the title at the end of each credits sequence is a dragon, woven into a circle, reminiscent of the ouroboros symbol — a serpent or dragon eating its own tail. It’s a fitting choice, given the emblem’s typical interpretation of life and death as an endless cycle of rebirth, and the series’ belief in a type of reincarnation, where men and women are but threads being spun into the Pattern of the Ages, which is turned forever by the Wheel of Time.
Except the actual “Wheel of Time” logo isn’t a dragon eating its own tail. It’s a dragon weaving forward, toward the screen, with its mouth open but the tail far in the distance. If you squint,...

Exclusive: The Wheel of Time boss Rafe Judkins has revealed how the Amazon drama series will handle the recasting of core character Mat Cauthon from Barney Harris to Dónal Finn in Season 2. Deadline confirmed in September that Harris was departing after the first season of the series, which scored a Season 2 renewal ahead of its November 19 premiere.
Judkins, in the midst of shooting the new season, declined comment on the reason for the swap.
“It’s always hard but we’re really lucky that Barney is so great in the first season; I love him in the show,” Judkins told Deadline. “And Dónal Finn, who is playing Mat in Season 2, is amazing. I have seen him up on set doing his scenes now and they’re incredible and they fully capture the character. I think it’s a testament to this character and how great the character of Mat is...

There are no dragons in The Wheel of Time. In fact, most characters in the Robert Jordan novels wouldn’t even be able to tell you what a dragon is. But assuming the mythical creatures went extinct millennia ago provides a sense of the scale for the cyclical history that gives the series its name, and one of the most notable historical figures from the long gone Age of Legends is an ancient hero who named himself the Dragon. The latest trailer finds Rosamund Pike’s Moiraine seeking his reincarnation, the Dragon Reborn.
As an Aes Sedai scholar and channeler, Moiraine begins the series uniquely equipped to track down potential candidates before they even know the importance of their own existence. To the villagers in Two Rivers, the Dragon was a powerful channeler who was among those who accidentally released the nameless evil known as the Dark One into the world.

Exclusive: A major character on Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television’s high-profile fantasy series The Wheel of Time, headlined by Rosamund Pike, is being recast for Season 2.
Dónal Finn (The Witcher) has been tapped to portray Mat Cauthon, replacing Barney Harris, who played the role in Season 1, which is set to premiere November 19 on Amazon Prime Video. The reasons for the recasting are unclear. The expansive, world-building drama, adapted from Robert Jordan’s books, involves a lengthy, complex overseas shoot in the Czech Republic. Filming on Season 2 is underway.

Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series would seem to defy adaptation with its massive cast of characters, centuries of history, and sprawling world map. The danger of alienating longtime fans of the books with inaccuracies or confusing newcomers with too many details is very real. However, showrunner Rafe Judkins was up to the challenge, deciding which aspects of the novels made the story original and bringing those key aspects to television. “I think it’s our job to both be true to the Wheel of Time books but also be mindful of… the things that could feel repetitive [and those] that are fresh and unique,” he says.
The Wheel of Time doesn’t rely on a single protagonist, for example, but instead introduces three unwitting young heroes in a familiar fantasy journey, escaping those who would prevent them from fulfilling important destinies they know nothing about. Josha Stradowski is the...

Sweeping vistas. Hand-to-hand combat. Birthing dragons (kind of). For most TV fans, “The Wheel of Time” should call to mind “Game of Thrones” fairly quickly, but the epic fantasy book series pre-dates George R.R.
