It’s not as if New Orleans necessarily needs to gift the world any more culture than it already has. But the birthplace of jazz music, Gullah cuisine and writers ranging from Anne Rice to John Kennedy Toole is quickly becoming—in addition to its many other virtues—something of an indie film hotspot. From platforming local creators to providing a can’t-miss stop along the international auteur circuit, Nola’s film festival scene is in the middle of an epic flex.
Chief among these, the city’s namesake New Orleans Film Festival has been bringing the best independent cinema to the ochre shores of the Mississippi River since 1989. This week, Film Independent’s Festival Visions series—our ongoing spotlight of the best programming picks from regional and specialty festivals nationwide—continues, with an online showing of the Lgbtqia+ short documentary House of Tulip, screening online and for free, July...

A lot of fans like to wax poetic about what it would have been like to see the opening weekend releases of classic horror films like "Halloween" or "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," believing that it would have bordered on a religious experience getting to see the career of a horror master beginning in real-time. Fortunately, all of us alive and able to see Nikyatu Jusu's Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner, "Nanny," can do just that, as Jusu is undoubtedly one of the future pillars of horror filmmaking.
Jusu has been making short films for nearly 15 years, with her phenomenal vampire short film "Suicide by Sunlight" inspiring us to name her as one of the directors we'd love to see tackle the new "Blade" movie for Marvel. Now, Nikyatu Jusu is the second Black woman director to ever take home the biggest prize at Sundance (following Chinonye Chukwu's...

Kelly Duane de la Vega is putting the finishing touches to her documentary “In the Bones” (previously known as “Mississippi Red”), set to premiere in January. The film is set in Mississippi during a legislative session when equal pay for equal work and abortion rights are being decided, and zooms in on the lives of 12 protagonists – including a prominent Republican politician teaming up with a Democrat activist to create bipartisan pressure. The project was presented this week as part of Ji.hlava New Visions Forum: U.S. Docs, during the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival.
“It’s a bit Robert Altman-inspired,” Kelly Duane de la Vega tells Variety. “We wanted to find people who embodied some of the struggles that we thought were important in terms of women’s rights.”
That included a family finally addressing its legacy of domestic violence and attempting to break the cycle, people...
