”“September is always low,” said Fncf’s Marc-Olivier Sebbag, “People have other things to do.”
Despite a promising summer blockbuster boost and August upswing, France’s September box office struggled with just 8.8m ticket sales and a total gross of approximately €63.2m, based on an average ticket price of €7.
The September slump was down 21.1% compared to the pre-pandemic 2017-2019 average and the lowest since 2005 (8.4m).
However it was up 16.1% from last year’s abysmal 7.6m admissions. Last September’s record low marked the worst month at the French box office since 1980, excluding the pandemic-ridden 2020 when cinemas were closed for most of the year.

The company will be launching sales on four new French movies, “All Your Faces,” “Toni,” “Strangers by Night” and “A Chance to Win,” during the Rendez-Vous market that French film and TV promotion org Unifrance is hosting this week in Paris.
“All Your Faces,” Jeanne Herry’s follow up to “Pupille,” stars Gilles Lellouche (“The Stronghold”), Adele Exarchopoulos (“Blue Is the Warmest Color”) and Leila Bekhti (“La Source”). The star-studded drama, produced by two of France’s best-known producers, Chi-Fou-Mi and Tresor Films, revolves around perpetrators and victims of offenses who confront each other under a restorative justice plan.
“Toni,” meanwhile, is directed Nathan Ambrosioni and is headlined by “Call My Agent!” star Camille Cottin. Also produced by Chi-Fou-Mi, “Toni” stars Cottin as a single mother raising her five children and juggling a full-time job. As...

Premiering today on AMC’s horror streaming service Shudder is Kôji Shiraishi’s Sadako Vs Kayako, a heavyweight battle between two Japanese genre icons. Yes, you heard me right – premiering. Shudder has slowly been building a catalog of new releases – from Mattie Do’s Laotian hautner Dearest Sister to Nathan Ambrosioni’s found-footage Therapy (made by a teenager!) – but Shiraishi’s foreign import may be the platform’s biggest catch to date. Shudder was lucky enough to roll out the blood-red carpet at Tiff for the film’s first festival showing (after exclusively torturing overseas audiences), where I braved a midnight screening for some undead chick-fight wackiness.
My review says it all, but here’s what you can expect:
Those with a palate for J-Horror will be more in-tune with Shiraishi’s darkly humorous ghost story, as two of the meanest undead ladies in all of cinema collide for a...

New release Therapy marks an exciting upwards trend for horror streaming service Shudder not only because it’s exclusive to them, but because the committee in charge of sniffing out new content is putting just as much care into Shudder exclusives as they are established genre necessities.
How else are you going to hear about a *worthwhile* French found footage indie from a 17-year-old director (Nathan Ambrosioni)? Studios don’t have to balls to back such lofty ambitions, which is where Shudder comes in, fast-forwarding the whole cult-classic process by purchasing rights to films you otherwise wouldn’t discover until two years from now based on a buddy’s recommendation. First Sadako V Kayako, now Therapy – horror friends, if you’re not on Shudder, we need to talk.
Ambrosioni’s criminal horror flick begins much like any found footage slasher would, as a group of vacationing friends stumble upon imminent danger.
