I’ll be honest, if you said that I am not exactly a huge fan of Christmas movies you would be absolutely correct; with the few that I do like not exactly being your typical movies. I thought Bad Santa was decent and I like Jingle All The Way a lot but for the most part I’m not that fussed.
That was until 2020 came around and among all the real life crap this year threw at us, a trailer dropped for a new movie starring the criminally underrated and under-utilised Walton Goggins. I mean seriously how is this guy not in bloody everything? Even Marvel hires him for Ant-Man and the Wasp only to bury his role but the dude is insanely good. Mel Gibson cornered the market on playing grizzled and charismatic badasses with more than a hint of darkness behind the eyes over three decades ago, but the Lethal Weapon star is nowhere near the first name that comes to mind when you envision Santa Claus. In most Christmas movies, Jolly Old Saint Nick is a lovable character that embodies the festive season, but in Eshom and Ian Nelms’ subversive Fatman, Gibson’s Chris Cringle is running low on both enthusiasm and patience.
The sort of alternative holiday caper that’s destined for cult classic status, Fatman sees a 12 year-old kid hire a hitman to kill Santa after receiving a lump of coal in his stocking. That sort of high concept pitch could easily be played for laughs, but the pic incorporates elements of the action, thriller and Western genres to create a uniquely entertaining melting pot of influences.

We’ve reached that time of year where the annual parade of Christmas movies are released to generate warm and fuzzy festive feelings in the audience, but none of the titles are as unique as Ian and Eshom Nelms’ Fatman. The R-rated subversion of the holiday genre stars Mel Gibson as a disillusioned Chris Cringle suffering from a downturn in business, who despite the unwavering support of his wife Ruth also has to deal with Walton Goggins’ Skinny Man after a 12 year-old kid hires an assassin to take out Jolly Old Saint Nick after receiving a lump of coal in his stocking.
Destined to become a cult favorite, Fatman balances elements of the action, dark comedy, thriller, noir and even Western genres into a distinct cocktail of Yueltide madness. We Got This Covered recently had the chance to speak to directors Ian and Eshom Nelms about Fatman and much more...

Is attempting to pervert the happiest time of year still a fresh approach? No, but Fatman sure thinks so. Is putting folklore into our reality a good excuse for hijinks? It can be, but it isn’t here. If a comedy doesn’t have a single laugh, does that make it bad? Of course it does, but the real slap to the face for something like this isn’t its inability to get even a chuckle. It’s how boring it is, enough so to make you roll your eyes and curl your toes in perfect unison. What feels like a Robot Chicken sketch drawn out to 100 minutes doesn’t even sound too hopeful in theory, but it didn’t have to be this pointless.
This so-called Fatman—who is he? He’s Chris Cringle (Mel Gibson). Santa Claus. But this Santa is edgy. He doesn’t live in the North Pole,...

Brace for this: “Fatman” is a Christmas-themed comic thriller starring Mel Gibson as a gritty, despondent, cash-strapped Chris Cringle who — at the height of the holiday season — has to negotiate a hostile takeover from the U.S. military while fending off a hellbent assassin (Walton Goggins) hired by some bratty rich kid who’s pissed off that he got coal in his stocking the previous year. It’s 100 minutes long, it End of review.
Seriously, what else is there to say? Either you want to see a movie called “Fatman” that paints Santa Claus — played by the living embodiment of holiday cheer himself — as a moody Boomer who bemoans the good old days and sports a bushy gray bearded look that can only be described as “Blood Father Christmas” … or you don’t. The most gracious and open-minded response this yuletide aberration is the acknowledgement that there has to be...

Christmas movies are typically designed to instil warm and fuzzy feelings in the audience, and the plots are usually straightforward stories that deliver the requisite happy endings and see the characters rediscover the importance of their friends, families and loved ones, as well as their Christmas spirit.
However, there’s definitely a market for alternative festive films, one that’s been filled over the decades by action classic Die Hard, the anarchic Gremlins, Gothic superhero sequel Batman Returns, the foul-mouthed Bad Santa, the tongue in cheek horror of Krampus and virtually Shane Black’s entire filmography from Lethal Weapon and The Long Kiss Goodnight to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man 3.
Writer/directors Eshom and Ian Nelms are the latest to throw their hats into the ring with Fatman, and the movie is destined to become a cult classic for fans that like their Christmas cheer to be...

There’s an interesting idea for a movie in “Fatman,” which seeks to spin a bleak and wintry hitman tale into a deadpan dark Christmas comedy by making Santa Claus the target of that hired killer. It never makes it past the idea stage, unfortunately, since mixing these disparate genres together would require an absolute mastery of tone that the film can’t quite muster.
Writers-directors Ian Nelms and Eshom Nelms (“Small Town Crime”) certainly can’t be faulted for ambition, but their big idea doesn’t make it all the way down the chimney.
Despicable rich child Billy already has a working relationship with the assassin known as the Skinny Man (Walton Goggins), having recently hired him to kidnap a classmate to force her to give Billy a science-fair prize he thought was rightfully his. When Billy’s wicked ways earn him coal from Santa Claus (Mel Gibson), the...

Horror movies are currently dominating the conversation now that we’re just a week away from Halloween, but you can guarantee that as soon as it turns midnight and we’re into November, the focus will almost immediately shift to the festive season. Every year, there are a huge number of Christmas-themed flicks released in the hopes that they’ll eventually join the pantheon of classics that get revisited on an annual basis like Home Alone, It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street and Scrooged.
A lot of them fade quickly from memory, but one of the more unconventional titles that’s looking to seize upon a gap in the market is Eshom and Ian Nelms’ Fatman. Completely ignoring the Die Hard debate that we need to hear every year, there aren’t exactly a huge number of festive action movies, which is where Mel Gibson’s Chris Cringle is hoping to step in.

Christmas spirit looks a little different with Mel Gibson, who we see portraying a rowdy, gun-toting Santa Claus in the first trailer for Saban Films’ Fatman.

The 'Fatman' trailer has arrived and it shows Mel Gibson as an unconventional Santa Claus.
Saban Films has dropped the first official trailer for Eshom and Ian Nelms’ upcoming action-comedy film 'Fatman.'
The dark action-comedy features Mel Gibson, as a whole different kind of Santa Claus who is being hunted by a highly-skilled assassin (Walton Goggins).
'Fatman' is about a 12-year-old brat who receives a lump of coal in his stocking and decides to hire a trained hitman to kill Chris Cringle aka Santa Claus, whose “business” is in such decline that he’s become bitter, broke, and alcoholic. Due to which, he is forced into a partnership with the U.S. military as he gets locked into a deadly battle of wits against the assassin.
"I've come for your head, fatman!" warns Goggins' assassin in the trailer.
"You think you're the first?!" shoots back Father Christmas.

"You just messed up big time, Fatman!!!!" Saban Films has released an official trailer for a wacky fun new action-comedy called Fatman, which is a reference to the slang word for what people sometimes call Santa Claus. Which is exactly what this is about. Mel Gibson stars as Chris Cringle, a "rowdy, unorthodox Santa Claus" who is upset fighting his business going downhill. To save his declining business, Cringle is forced into a partnership with the U.S. military. Making matters worse, he gets locked into a deadly battle of wits against a highly skilled assassin, hired by a precocious 12-year-old after receiving a lump of coal in his stocking. This also stars Walton Goggins, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Shaun Benson, Chance Hurstfield, Jordan Blais, Deborah Grover, and Paulino Nunes. Yes this looks as fun as it sounds, in a good way. And honestly I must admit I love the tagline, too:...

In what is definitely not a case of conventional casting, Mel Gibson is playing Santa Claus in this year’s action-comedy hybrid, Fatman. And he has the gun-toting trailer to prove it.
As revealed in the latest bit of marketing, Fatman marks the first time someone has looked at Gibson’s often resplendent gray beard and said, “Santa.” The Oscar winning filmmaker who’s also notorious for virulent outbursts is going to portray that not-so-jolly Chris Cringle in this new movie from the writer-directing pair of Eshom and Ian Nelms. The two, who previously helmed Small Time Crime, direct Gibson as a Santa at the end of his ropes. Business is declining and to make ends meet, Chris has partnered with the U.S. military to deliver toys to good little boys and girls. Unfortunately for some, he also still delivers coal.
Thus enters 12-year-old boy Billy (Chance Hurtsfield), a...

When you think of Christmas movies, your mind typically wanders to uplifting and whimsical tales like It’s a Wonderful Life, enduring family favorites like Home Alone, iconic entries in the genre such as White Christmas or Miracle on 34th Street, as well as the annual debate over whether or not Die Hard can be called a festive film. As always, though, there are countless new holiday-themed titles on the way this year, but rest assured that none of them will be anything like Fatman.
As far as high concept pitches go, they don’t come any more unique than this one.
