Exclusive: ITN has become the latest blue-chip British production company to reveal the scale of the financial damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
In a set of 2020 earnings published on the UK’s Companies House, Britain’s premier news producer revealed that its pre-tax profit fell 54% to £1.1 million ($1.53M) after other producers, such as ITV Studios, posted similar double-digit declines. ITN’s group revenues were down 11% to £121M.
ITN, which has just appointed former NBC News executive Deborah Turness as its CEO, blamed “unprecedented economic challenges” relating to Covid-19, but said it actually weathered the storm reasonably well last year. This is largely because it has a stable base of income, thanks to its news contracts with ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5.
“ITN proved its resilience in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, continuing to deliver a range of output to its client base and audiences at home,” the company said,...

Tim Davie is the right person at the right time to take over as director general of the BBC.
That seems to be the U.K. industry’s general view on the day that former PepsiCo and Proctor & Gamble marketing executive and long-time BBC staffer Davie won what is considered the most prized job in British media. His appointment came despite some sentiments that the job ought to have gone to the other internal candidate, BBC director of content Charlotte Moore, who would have been the first female director general.
When current boss Tony Hall announced earlier this year he was leaving, many thought the BBC would break with years of tradition and look to appoint somebody other than a white, male, Oxford or Cambridge University-educated leader. (Davie went to Cambridge.)
However, Davie, who has run the BBC’s production and distribution arm BBC Studios since 2018, quickly emerged as the front-runner,...

U.K. television news producer ITN has called for more stringent regulation of social media giants to stem the rise of fake news and misinformation.
The producer of news for ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 has published a submission to the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee’s inquiry into the future of journalism. In its submission, ITN calls on the U.K. government to develop a mandatory code of conduct between media companies and digital platforms.
ITN states that the Covid-19 pandemic is a sharp reminder that trustworthy information is critical to the wellbeing of citizens, and that vast swathes of misinformation have spread rapidly on social media.
ITN argues that internet companies that breach the rules should face similarly strong sanctions to highly regulated broadcasters.
“These sanctions should mirror those which apply to broadcasters, which face losing their licence to broadcast if Ofcom finds them to...
