The 2024 Barcelona Open has received a major boost, with local hero Carlos Alcaraz set to return to the Atp 500 event this year.
The tournament will feel like a long time away for the Spaniard. Alcaraz's next matches are exhibitions at the Australian Open, which includes a repeat of the 2022 US Open final with Casper Ruud.
However, the clay-court season is undoubtedly one that Alcaraz looks forward to every year. It is the surface that he grew up on, and how comfortable he feels on the dirt is clear for everyone to see.
Alcaraz is yet to translate that clay-court prowess into a triumph at the French Open. However, most in the tennis world agree it is only a matter of time before that changes. Some argue that he would have beaten Novak Djokovic in last year's semifinal, had cramp not set in.
The Barcelona Open is a tournament where Alcaraz has been successful.

Alexander Bublik is quite the character, and one story he told himself paints a pretty clear picture of that.
Most tennis fans know who Alexander Bublik is and what he's famous for. He's certainly a capable player, but there are probably no players who approach tennis as loosely as he does.
He's not the only one, as something similar can be said of Daniil Medvedev, but Bublik takes it to another level. One situation in particular sticks out about how loosely he approaches his career, from Monte Carlo in 2022.
He played against Pablo Carreno Busta and simply walked off the court in the third set. It was a shocking thing to see for many fans, but Bublik finally explained what had happened.
During the Uts Christmas dinner, Bublik explained to Casper Ruud and Benoit Paire that he gave the Spaniard his word that he'd walk off if he got broke...

Former Top 10 player on the Atp Tour, Pablo Carreno Busta , underwent surgery to address an elbow injury that bothered him for much of this year.

Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz largely dominated this year, and it's not a surprise, according to fellow Atp pro, Pablo Carreno Busta .
Saying that Djokovic and Alcaraz dominated this year is a bit of a simplification because there is more nuance to that. We've seen players like Jannik Sinner win events , we've seen Medvedev win a couple of events, but for the most part, it was mostly Alcaraz and Djokovic.
The Serbian won three of the four Grand Slams this year, including the recent US Open, while Alcaraz surprisingly won Wimbledon . They are also battling it out for the year-end No. 1, so they did outperform the rest of the Tour.
According to fellow player Pablo Carreno Busta, who spoke to Punto de Break , the duo dominating is not a surprise. He's been injured for much of this year, so he's been able to witness it as a spectator more so than a player.

Pablo Carreno Busta is certain that the new tennis balls had something to do with his injury that kept him away from tennis for much of this year.
Pablo Carreno Busta played only five matches this year having a record of 1-4 so far and much of that had to do with his injury. The Spaniard returned recently at the Alicante Atp Challenger losing his first match in 8 months.
His last match before returning to Alicante happened back in February when he lost to Richard Gasquet in Rotterdam. Carreno Busta, who peaked at number 10 on the Atp Rankings, attempted multiple comebacks, but none succeeded as the injury reappeared every time.
It's very similar to the elbow issue Stefanos Tsitsipas had, which didn't get fixed until he underwent surgery. Carreno Busta's elbow injury completely drained him mentally, as he revealed in a recent interview with Punto de Break .

Carlos Alcaraz won't play for Spain at the upcoming Davis Cup Finals, and it proved an issue for Team Captain David Ferrer.
David Ferrer used to be a very good tennis player, being incredibly consistent although lacking major silverware. His tennis knowledge is vast, though, which is why he's leading the Spanish Davis Cup Team as Captain.
The former Atp player had some issues with the team because the country will be without top player Carlos Alcaraz and Pablo Carreno Busta, who has been injured for a very long time. Despite the troubles, the country still put together a solid team consisting of veterans Roberto Bautista Agut and Albert Ramos and younger players like Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Bernabe Zapata Miralles.
The country is hosting its group in Valencia, and ahead of that, Ferrer sat down with the media, discussing the upcoming matchups with Serbia, the Czech Republic, and the Republic of Korea.

The 2023 Canadian Open will be played in Toronto this year as the Atp 1000 event returns from August 7th to 13th.
The Atp & Wta 1000 tournaments in Canada are very unique. The events are held simultaneously but not at the same venue. The players alternate between Toronto and Montreal and this year it's time for men to play in Toronto with the entry list star-studded once again.
Last year, Pablo Carreno Busta became the surprising champion in Montreal and the Spaniard will be back in 2023 despite having an injury-plagued season. Yet, as throughout the 2023 season, all eyes will be on Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz .
The Serb couldn't compete in Canada last year but he returns this year, eyeing his first title at the event since 2016. In his career, Djokovic won four titles at the Canadian Open with two triumphs in each city.
But it won't be just about the young Spaniard and the experienced Serbian.

Carlos Alcaraz made a winning start at the 2023 Cinch Championships though he doesn't have any huge expectations of it.
Carlos Alcaraz travelled to London without his coach leaning on the coach of his friend Pablo Carreno Busta. Ferrero will join Alcaraz next week in London. The Spaniard played only two grass events before this one and there were some concerns about his familiarity with grass as he admitted himself that it's not the best surface for him.
The expectations are not that high for this part of the year. Alcaraz is aware that he likely won't be able to beat Djokovic on grass , but he will try. The expectations for this event certainly aren't high as he admitted after the match.
Well, honestly my expectation in this tournament are not too high (smiling). You know, I have played two tournaments on grass in my career. I'm not going to count the juniors obviously.

Carlos Alcaraz arrived in London on Saturday but he didn't arrive with his longtime coach Juan Carlos Ferrero with him.
Carlos Alcaraz generally travels with Juan Carlos Ferrero though that hasn't been always the case. The Spaniard notably was at the US Open without his coach in the early stages though Ferrero naturally arrived for the conclusion of the event.
Generally, Ferrero is with him around the Atp Tour, but he's a family man so at times he skips some events in order to stay back with his family. That's the case this week as Alcaraz gets ready to play at the 2023 Cinch Championships in the week of June 19th.
Despite not being with Ferrero, Alcaraz will have a coach this week as he will be helped out by the very experienced Samuel Lopez who is the current coach of Pablo Carreno Busta. Alcaraz and Carreno Busta are close, having...

If there is one thing that Nick Kyrgios has shown us over the years, it's that he thrives on being unpredictable.
His unorthodox style, coupled with his talent, has made him a fan favorite and a constant challenger for titles on the Atp Tour. This year, he will be hoping to bring yet another surprise as he will be defending his last year's final appearance at Wimbledon.
The Australian started 2023 on a challenging note, missing the Australian Open due to a left knee injury. This injury resulted in him undergoing arthroscopic surgery in January. Everything was going well for Kyrgios on the road to recovery, but later, a foot injury sustained during a car theft incident further complicated his recovery.
Because of that, he was forced to withdraw from the 2023 Roland Garros. However, recent updates have been encouraging, suggesting that Kyrgios is on track for a strong comeback. His recovery process has been steady,...

Gael Monfils won't be competing at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters after yet another injury setback.
Monfils, once a semi-finalist in 2015 and finalist in 2016, has not graced the Monte-Carlo courts for seven long years. Currently ranked 324th on the Atp Tour, his protected ranking due to injury allows him entry into the tournaments of his choice. Regrettably, his highly-anticipated comeback to clay courts in Monte Carlo will have to wait.
Despite his optimism about recovering from a wrist injury sustained during the Miami Open, Monfils had to withdraw from the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters, which is the first Atp 1000 clay-court event in the calendar, running from April 9th to 16th. After the event in Miami, he said:
"Am I making a comeback? Or am I about to quit tennis? Not obvious, judging by the media coverage I have received in recent weeks. Let’s set the record straight: Yes, I lost my first two matches in the United States.

On Tuesday, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Pablo Carreno-Busta all withdrew from the first Atp 1000 clay-court tournament of the season. The 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters will be played from April 9th to 16th and it lost a lot of star power only in a few hours.

The 37-year-old three-time Grand Slam champion cited the need for additional preparation time before launching his clay season campaign. Wawrinka's absence is a blow to the Estoril Open organizers, who had eagerly awaited his presence at the event scheduled for April 3rd to 9th.
