I was drawn to 2018′s Family initially by the lead-casting of Taylor Schilling, mainly because of how much I liked her throughout the seasons of Orange is the New Black. I also found an appeal in the synopsis, which sounded fresh, interesting and fun. Who doesn’t dig that kind of thing? As for the brief idea here, we follow Kate (Schilling), a Senior V.P who is very focused on her career, but when her estranged brother asks her, last-minute, to babysit her niece Maddie, she reluctantly helps out and see’s her life becomes a chaotic one in the process. Oh, and there’s Juggalo’s too. Yep.

The Film Arcade has released the trailer for “Family,” writer-director Laura Steinel’s comedy starring Taylor Schilling as a workaholic whose unexpected week of niece-sitting naturally ends at the Gathering of the Juggalos. The “Orange Is the New Black” star isn’t the only one immersing herself in the music and culture of Insane Clown Posse, as newcomer Bryn Vale dons black-and-white face paint. Watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis: “Kate Stone (Taylor Schilling) is career-focused, and enjoys her life that way. Her brash attitude keeps relationships at arm’s length, making her an outcast in her own right. When her estranged brother calls asking her to babysit her tween niece Maddie, Kate reluctantly agrees to help. But babysitting overnight unexpectedly turns into a week, and Kate’s life spins into chaos. As Maddie reveals stories of being bullied and of wanting to run away and be a Juggalo,...

"I don't want your money, Kate, I want a sister!" The Film Arcade has released the first official trailer for an indie comedy titled Family, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival last year. The film is the feature debut of writer Laura Steinel, telling a story about a young woman who reluctantly babysits her brother's very weird, bullied tween daughter, only to discover she's into the juggalo community and planning to sneak away to an Insane Clown Posse concert. Taylor Schilling stars as the self-absorbed workaholic sister, and the cast includes Bryn Vale, Kate McKinnon, Brian Tyree Henry, Eric Edelstein, Allison Tolman, Jessie Ennis, and Matt Walsh. Family is, of course, a film about learning that "family can be found in all different forms" and features a "delightful and layered comedic performance" from Schilling. Enjoy this one. Here's the first official trailer for Laura Steinel's Family, direct from The...

Family debuted at SXSW last week and it's a funny, honest, and refreshing film centered around strong leading ladies. It serves as a reminder that women can own a film too and it doesn't have to be one of those boring romcoms. We sat down with some of the cast along with writer/director Laura Steinel to discuss the film.
Kate (played by Taylor Schilling) is a businesswoman in New York married to her career. When her brother (played by Eric Edelstein) begs her to watch her niece, Maddie (played by Bryn Vale) because his wife (played by Allison Tolman)'s mother is ill – she drags her feet but eventually agrees. Though, while under Kate's supervision, Maddie befriends a bunch of Juggalos and Kate has to struggle with kind of saving her from those “wrong side of the tracks” type people. The film eventually becomes a dual coming of age...

Kate Stone (Taylor Schilling) has spent her whole life chasing boring leads in a bland office job, can’t stand her other people, and has such an estranged relationship with her brother (Eric Edelstein) that she barely realizes he has an adolescent daughter Maddie (Bryn Vale) — until, one day, he begs her to babysit the girl for a few days while her parents are away. So begins the formula of “Family,” writer-director Laura Steinel’s amiable debut, which belongs to that familiar tradition of commercial storytelling that finds an unhappy woman discovering a better path in connecting with others. You’ve probably seen a version of this movie before, just not with all the Juggalos.
That’s right, Juggalos: those hard-partying anarchists in clown makeup who gather each year for raucous debauchery with carnivalesque glee. “Family” begins with Kate stumbling through that affair, looking terrified and out of place, setting...

“I think I wanted to make a movie for women to be able to be rougher characters than they're usually given opportunities to play,” writer/director Laura Steinel told Deadline yesterday out of SXSW, of her latest directorial effort, Family. “That was my first goal, just to make a character that was a little bit more abrasive and not your typical female character.” Starring Taylor Schilling, Bryn Vale, Allison Tolman, Eric Edelstein, Jessie Ennis and Blair Beeken, the…...

If you thought Holly Hunter and Evan Rachel Wood had it bad in their tug-of-war in Thirteen, Taylor Schilling’s workaholic Kate Stone is tasked with saving her niece Maddie (newcomer Bryn Vale) from joining the juggalos in Steinel’s comedy. For those who don’t know what a juggalo is, they’re fans of the…...
