Veteran actors returning to form with grand action spectacles, spy capers, and franchise movie gigs has become a yearly tradition at this point, so Jeff Bridges returning to the small screen in his early 70s with a TV series adaptation of novelist Thomas Perry’s political espionage thriller, The Old Man, back in 2022 was nothing unprecedented. What sets this return apart from other ‘big name project baits’ though is that the series is more cerebral, smart, and character-driven than most similar ventures shouldered by younger leads. Jeff Bridges puts his years of experience on the silver screen to excellent use in presenting a physically diminished, psychologically afflicted hard-boiled spy—weighed down by the burdens of the past—and practically carries the first season of The Old Man on his back. Having very minimal yet solid action sequences, the narrative focus often hovers around questions of identity, nature of truth, moral tribulations,...

Good things come to those who wait, as the old saying goes, which is especially true this week in terms of new movies and shows to watch, which sees the return (after more than two years) of the excellent thriller “The Old Man,” plus the completion (after a month) of the fifth season of “Emily in Paris.” Plus the debut of two shows (“Universal Basic Guys” on Fox and “Three Women” on Starz) that were announced long ago and have had prolonged journeys to your TV screen. After a season dedicated to a game of cat and mouse, Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow are teaming up in the first trailer for “The Old Man” Season 2. The FX drama is set to premiere on Sept. 12.
“This was a warning. The next time you aren’t going to see it coming.” Those loaded words from Bridges’ Dan Chase and a pointed gun kick off this first look into the upcoming season.
The trailer then sets the stakes of this season, explaining that FBI agent Emily Chase (Alia Shawkat) has been abducted by a powerful Afghan tribal leader. The only problem is Emily has both Chase and Harold Harper (Lithgow) — a ruthless former CIA agent and a former FBI Assistant Director, respectfully — as her potential fathers. As Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” plays, the camera pans across the Afghanistan desert as Emily’s tortured screams can be heard.

Margot Robbie has been catching the world’s attention for her role as Barbie in Barbie, but now she’s capturing even more praise.
A video of Robbie at the Amsterdam premiere last fall, interacting with a deaf fan through sign language, has won the hearts of many as it proves her casting as Barbie couldn’t be more perfect. The short encounter with the fan, Thomas Perry, shows Robbie putting away the paper and marker she was holding to free her hands in order to communicate with Perry.
Before using sign language, Robbie says, “I know it!” and proceeds to sign phrases like, “Nice to meet you.”
Perry didn’t think he would have the chance to have a close encounter with Robbie but revealed that they had spoken for around three minutes.

Exclusive: Filming on Season 2 of the FX drama series The Old Man, starring Jeff Bridges, is being suspended. We hear the crew of the series, produced by 20th Television, were alerted this morning of the decision to stop after today’s shoot, completing Episode 204.
According to sources, the plan had been to film through Episode 205 as five Season 2 scripts had been completed before the writers strike started on June 2. However, the last remaining script needed rewrites, so production will wrap now for the foreseeable future. It will resume sometime after the WGA work stoppage is over.
The set of the show in Santa Clarita has been picketed, causing some delays in production last Thursday. Accompanied by a producer, Bridges crossed the picket line in a van that day.

Under the deal, Mendelsohn and Weitz will develop dramas for the broadcast network, with any projects greenlit from the deal becoming wholly owned by Fox Entertainment. The first project under the pact will be The Bomb Maker, based on a novel by Thomas Perry (The Old Man) that Fox Entertainment Studios has optioned.
“Carol is one of the great architects of broadcast television’s most influential and longstanding dramas. Together with Julie, we have two of the most talented, respected producers in the industry; and we are excited to bring their creativity and powerful storytelling to Fox, starting with their development of The Bomb Maker,...

At first it’s hard to believe The Old Man could be a spy thriller. The Disney+ series opens with mighty Jeff Bridges groaning to put on socks. His elderly but Awol CIA agent – the too aptly named Dan Chase – makes doctor’s appointments to discuss ailments he doesn’t even have. “When I was a little girl, you were a king,” his daughter tells him, seemingly testing out lines for dad’s eulogy.
Soon, though, the diminished king’s past catches up with him, forcing a return to imperial form. Turns out it’s like riding a bike. By the end of the first hour, Dan’s polishing off the upstarts sent to apprehend him with the kind of lethal timing that belongs in a Bond film. When one foe spits, “F*** you, old man,” at the end of a drag-out fistfight, Dan has his dogs – who must have...

Jeff Bridges has revealed that his recent health scare made him question the remainder of his career, admitting that he thought “seriously” about retiring.
While filming his newest thriller series, The Old Man, based on Thomas Perry’s novel of the same name, the 72-year-old Big Lebowski star came “pretty close to dying”.
While recovering from chemotherapy to treat his non-Hodgkins lymphoma, which he had been diagnosed with in 2020, he caught covid and became seriously ill.
“I thought after my illness I didn’t know if I was gonna go back to work,” he told Variety in an interview this week. “I thought I was retiring, very seriously.”
However, he returned to set and finished production, which had been shut down for three months due to the pandemic and his health.
Reflecting again on the possibility of retirement, Bridges said: “You know, my dad he worked right up to the very end.

Based on Thomas Perry’s novel, “The Old Man” sees Jeff Bridges return to television for the first time in decades as a retired CIA operative involved in an increasingly deadly cat and mouse chase. Production was delayed first due to the pandemic and then Bridges’ battle with cancer and Covid-19 but the show, which also stars “30 Rock’s” John Lithgow and Hiam Abbass (“Succession”) finally aired on FX in June and now hits Disney+ internationally.
Ahead of its international premiere, Bridges spoke to Variety about making the show, his health struggles and whether he ever plans to retire.
How did you first get involved with this project?
A friend sent me a book called “The Old Man” to read years ago. And I didn’t read it, my wife read it. And then I was sent the script and I thought, “Oh, this title looks so familiar.” My wife said,...

If you frequent social media sites, you've likely seen a bit of backlash against the juggernaut that is the MCU. It seems like there is always another film or Disney+ series on the horizon. At San Diego Comic-Con in July, we learned about Marvel's massive Phase 5 and 6 slate through 2025. There are fans and naysayers alike that are beginning to feel like the studio has become a content factory. With everything interconnected in the MCU and big effects-heavy battle scenes sort of a must for each story, it's no wonder that some content creators are looking for a break.
That includes director Jon Watts, who took the helm for "Spider-Man: Homecoming," "Spider-Man: Far From Home," and the most recent entry for everyone's favorite web-slinger, "Spider-Man: No Way Home." Watts was originally set to direct the upcoming MCU film "Fantastic Four," but as of April 2022, he had left the project. At the time,...

Stephen King took the stand on Tuesday in the Penguin Random House-Simon & Schuster antitrust trial, telling the judge that he volunteered as a witness for the Justice Department because “consolidation is bad for the competition.”
King, in gray suit and gray tie and wearing sneakers, had the courtroom in laughter at moments as he recounted key moments in his career.
He is the Justice Department’s highest profile witness in its effort to block Penguin Random House’s proposed 2.2 billion acquisition of Simon & Schuster. The DOJ claims that the deal would adversely impact author advances of 250,000 and above for the most anticipated best sellers. The publishers plan to challenge the government’s rationale and methodology for claiming that the transaction would lessen such compensation for writers.
In his testimony, King compared the competitive landscape of today, with the big five publishers, to earlier in his career, when...

Editor’s Note: This story contains spoilers through Episode 6 of “The Old Man.”
Lymphoma was one thing. When Jeff Bridges, 72, learned the cancer diagnosis, he had shot almost four and a half episodes out of a planned ten of “The Old Man” (FX). It was the “Crazy Heart” Oscar-winner’s first starring role in a TV series. He had jumped on board the show from uber-producer Warren Littlefield right off the pilot. And then the pandemic hit.
“The world fell apart,” said showrunner Jonathan Steinberg on Zoom, tracing the rollercoaster course of the series leading up to the July 21 cliffhanger Episode 7 finale. “And then the writers and the world were coming back together again. But while we were making it Jeff got sick.”
Littlefield had first called showrunner Steinberg back in 2017 when he landed the rights to Thomas Perry’s new thriller about an ex-Afghanistan CIA operative who is unearthed...

A compelling but uneven game of cat and mouse unfolds in “The Old Man,” Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine’s adaptation of the Thomas Perry novel of the same name. At the center are two former CIA agents, Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) and Harold Harper (John Lithgow), who take turns as the hunter and quarry, as well as the “old man” of the title.
But while the FX drama deals in such dichotomies—predator and prey, hero and villain—it’s much more ambiguous about morality than its source material. “The Old Man” reminds us (and then reminds us some more) that being the hero of a story is often a matter of perspective; sometimes, it’s simply a matter of time.
When we first meet Dan, he looks well past his prime—waking up throughout the night to pee, enduring condescending bromides about aging from a new doctor.

This grizzled dude isn’t getting older. He’s getting deadlier. That’s the satisfying hook that makes FX’s The Old Man, loosely based on Thomas Perry’s taut novel, such an invigorating and surprising thriller. Is Dan Chase, or whatever he’s calling himself, a good guy or a bad guy? It’s not always easy telling the heroes from the villains in this season-long manhunt for a former CIA operative who’s been living off the grid for some 30 years. Roused to action when an assassin wakes his two loyal Rottweilers, this old man quickly proves he’s still a lethal player not to be messed with. Jeff Bridges is also a survivor, sidelined with lymphoma and Covid during production. He brings a gruff gravitas and an innate sense of unwavering decency to the role, for which he assumes three identities over the four episodes available for review.

The title of FX’s The Old Man doesn’t really tell you what kind of show it is. It could be a wacky multicamera sitcom about an ill-behaving senior citizen who gets kicked out of his retirement home and has to move in with his hipster grandson. It could be a whimsical dramedy about a retiree figuring out how to fill his days. Or it could be what it actually is: a thriller starring Jeff Bridges as a renegade former CIA operative who has to kill a lot of...

Jeff Bridges is back in action after a life-threatening battle with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Covid-19. At the Wednesday night premiere of his FX thriller “The Old Man”, the Oscar winner described the surreal experience of returning to set after a year-long hiatus due to his health struggles.
“I was sick for a year and then came back to work with all the same cast and crew, and it was like I had a bizarre dream or something,” Bridges told reporters on the red carpet at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.
Filming for the TV adaptation of Thomas Perry‘s 2017 novel was initially shut down in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. After production resumed later in the fall with three episodes left to shoot, it was once again halted when Bridges was diagnosed with cancer and left to seek treatment.

Dan Chase, the protagonist of FX’s new drama The Old Man, is on the run. He’s being chased — see what they did there? — by several agencies of the American government, at least one deadly contractor and international adversaries. He’s a clever man, but his primary antagonist is time — a past catching up to him and a future becoming more finite.
It’s a part made for Jeff Bridges, one of those actors who was born for and into Hollywood stardom and who has grown gracefully from golden boy to sage septuagenarian on movie screens nationwide. As if the star’s gravitas weren’t enough, it’s almost impossible to watch The Old Man without thinking about the show’s delays for both the Covid pandemic and Bridges’ cancer — without considering time.
As a thriller, The Old Man doesn’t always deliver.

Exclusive: Tfc Management, the company launched almost two years ago by David Stone and Ben Jacobson, has added The Fallout writer-director Megan Park, Hawkeye creator Jonathan Igla, and The Old Man co-creator Robert Levine to its growing roster of top writing and directing talent.
The Fallout, which marked Park’s feature directorial debut, premiered at SXSW before its debut on HBO Max earlier this year. Park is currently in pre-production on My Old Ass with Lucky Chap and Indian Paintbrush. She continues to be repped by Joannie Burstein at The Burstein Co. and Cohen Gardner.
Igla was the head writer, executive producer and showrunner of Disney+’s Marvel limited series Hawkeye, and he also worked on AMC’s Mad Men for several seasons. He continues to be repped by Johnson, Shapiro, Slewett & Kole.

Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow are two of our greatest living actors, so it’s exciting to see them paired up as the stars of the new FX thriller The Old Man (debuting Thursday, June 16 at 10/9c). In fact, the promise of Bridges and Lithgow sharing the screen is almost enough on its own to sell this… almost. But after seeing the first four episodes, I’m not completely sold. The Old Man hits all the beats of a standard spy thriller and delivers some bone-crunching action, but the personal stuff falls flat. It strikes a meditative tone, without giving us much to meditate on.
