Well, this sucks.
Hulu has canceled How I Met Your Father after two seasons.
The news broke Friday night, just months after the conclusion of the sophomore season.
The controversial decision means we'll be left on a cliffhanger because the show never got close to unmasking the identity of Sophie's baby daddy.
The series hinted at it with the second season's conclusion, with Sophie moving on with Jesse.
However, there were more key players in the mix, and there was the potential the show could pull the rug from under us to switch things up entirely.
How I Met Your Father picked up eight years after the events of How I Met Your Mother, taking us into a new circle of friends headlined by Hilary Duff.
The cast was rounded out by Chris Lowell, Francia Raisa, Tom Ainsley, Tien Tran, and Suraj Sharma.

It was announced today that Hulu has canceled How I Met Your Father after two seasons, which means that fans may never get to know the answer to the question posed by the title.
Set in the near future in 2050, How I Met Your Father follows Sophie (Kim Cattrall) telling her son the story of how she met his father back in the year 2022, when Sophie (Hilary Duff) and her close-knit group of friends – Jesse (Chris Lowell), Valentina (Francia Raisa), Charlie (Tom Ainsley), Ellen (Tien Tran) and Sid (Suraj Sharma) — were figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.
Although How I Met Your Father largely stood alone from I Met Your Mother, it did feature a few appearances from the stars of the original series, including Cobie Smulders as Robin and Neil Patrick Harris as Barney.

How I Met Your Father has come to a sudden halt, as Hulu has decided to axe the How I Met Your Mother series after only two seasons, following the recent Season 2 finale in July. Unlike the initial series, the show’s pilot revealed that the central character, 58-year-old Sophie (played by Kim Cattrall from Sex and the City), had already encountered her future husband. In the finale of Season 2, which is effectively the series finale of the show, Sophie enters a relationship with potential father-to-be Jesse,...

How I Met Your Father’s central mystery has become more of a guessing game. Whereas the original series didn’t introduce the mother (Cristin Milioti) until the very end of its penultimate season, Himyf establishes from the get-go that viewers have already met the father, narrowing the candidates down to Jesse (Chris Lowell), Sid (Suraj Sharma), Charlie (Tom Ainsley), Ian (Daniel Augustin), and Drew (Josh Peck). But after the sitcom’s two-part finale, Sid has emerged as the frontrunner for the role of Sophie’s (Hilary Duff) future husband.

My sophomore year of college started with “How I Met Your Mother.”
I had just moved into my first apartment with four roommates, some of whom I’d known for years and others who were effectively strangers. As another University of Michigan Welcome Week unfolded, we started every day on the couch bingeing this show none of us had ever seen before, becoming instant fans. Whoever woke first each morning would start the day’s viewing, the theme song beckoning us to crawl out of our respective bedrooms in a Pavlovian undergraduate hangover ritual.
We never found our way back to the series, then in its sixth season on CBS, but would always remember it as an essential part of becoming roommates. I’ve only revisited “Himym” once since its notorious 2014 series finale — it aged poorly enough for me to make immediate peace with never returning again — and had no...

Josh Peck has no idea if he's the father on "How I Met Your Father" - and even if he did, he wouldn't say. "If I did know and I leaked it, literally, guys in suits would descend and cart me off in some sort of van," he tells Popsugar. Despite not knowing how it all ends, Peck knows what he wants to happen. "I sure do hope," he says when asked if he'd like to be the father of Hilary Duff's son on the show.
In the "How I Met Your Mother" spinoff, Peck plays Drew, a vice principal at an elementary school where Chris (Jesse Lowell) works. Drew dates Duff's character Sophie throughout the first season, making him - along with Ian (Daniel Augustin), Jesse, Sid (Suraj Sharma), Charlie (Tom Ainsley), and even Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) - into a top contender for the father of Sophie's son.

In “Universal Therapy,” after Charlie (Tom Ainsley) gets the bar stuck with 10 cases of flavored rosé when a sales rep swindles him, he and Sid (Suraj Sharma) need a way to get rid of it. Ellen (Tien Tran) suggests they just add a celeb’s name to it, and everyone will slurp it up (like they did with Stanley Tucci’s Tucci’s Tortellini and Christina Ricci’s three-cheese ravioli). Charlie suggests Mint Romney, but Ellen says, “it needs to be someone people have welcomed into their homes, day after day, year after year. Someone trustworthy but feisty. “How I Met Your Father” kicks off new episodes in just a few weeks, and only Et exclusively debuts the season 2 trailer!
The minute-long trailer opens with Sophie (Hilary Duff) and her friend, Valentina (Francia Raisa), as they lament entering their 30s and how much of a “trainwreck” their lives still are. They’re all still trying to find “the love of [their] lives,” but as Sophie shares, “the world is not that simple anymore” as the friends continue to go through the highs and lows of trying to date in the modern age.
In one scene from the trailer, Ellen (Tien Tran) comments about how Sophie is dating “an older guy” as she and the others have a laugh about it at the bar — not knowing that Sophie’s new man (played by “Sex and the City’s” John Corbett) is actually there too. Awkward!

“We all want to meet the love of our life, but the world is not that simple anymore,” Sophie (Hilary Duff) says in the How I Met Your Father Season 2 trailer. Sophie’s love life was already complicated heading into the new episodes, which premiere on Tuesday, January 24. After all, she and Jesse (Christopher Lowell) only briefly gave it a try. Her date from the series premiere, Ian (Daniel Augustin), returned in the Season 1 finale. Also possibilities: Sid (Suraj Sharma) and Charlie (Tom Ainsley). Speaking of Charlie, can he and Valentina (Francia Raisa) really just be friends? But the moment that really made us stop while watching the trailer was seeing John Corbett guest starring as an older guy Sophie’s dating — especially since he played Duff’s teacher in 2004’s Raise Your Voice. Other guest stars shown in the video, which you can watch above, include Meghan Trainor and Mark Consuelos.

It's been eight years since How I Met Your Mother wrapped its run on CBS and the season finale of spinoff How I Met Your Father brought back an original star.
Hilary Duff's Sophie Tompkins made her way into McLaren's pub on Tuesday's season-ender and found herself getting some relationship advice from Robin Scherbatsky.
Yes, Cobie Smulders reprised the role, and it has got to be one of the stealthiest casting decisions in recent memory.
Far too often, big returns leak to the media several months in advance, but thankfully, this was a shocker kept well under wraps.
Ahead of the big meeting, Sophie questioned her relationship with Jesse after he told her that he loved her after they spent the night together.
“I once had a guy say ‘I love you’ on our first date,” Robin shared.
“Dude sounds like a real piece of work,” Sophie chimed in.

Spoiler Alert: This story reveals important plot points from the Season 1 finale of Hulu’s How I Met Your Father.
The Season 1 finale of Hulu’s How I Met Your Father had a little bit of everything for anxious fans: surprise (re)appearances, a tuxedo cat, a wedding, two breakups, and the final piece of the puzzle connecting The Captain (Kyle MacLachlan) and Sophie’s (Hilary Duff) love life.
The episode titled “Timing Is Everything” opens with the Captain as he is negotiating the terms of his divorce from Becky (Laura Bell Bundy), and all she wants is his most prized processions—his boats. If you’re wondering what on earth their marital woes have to do with Sophie, her future self (Kim Cattrall) asks for patience as the story unravels.
Present-day Sophie is almost stood up by Jesse (Chris Lowell) at a restaurant, but he barrels in extremely late with a tepid excuse.
