Zoe Sugg made herself famous on the internet. The year was 2009, video blogging was just becoming a thing on the world wide web, and she began posting videos to a little website called YouTube that hadn’t quite grown into what it is today. She amassed follower after follower, eventually hitting the 10 million mark in her subscriber count, and she launched her very own beauty brand. It was huge. She’s huge. Dominic Smales, the founder of the U.K.-based digital talent management firm Gleam Futures -- and a key architect behind the careers of several of YouTube's earliest stars, including the Pixiwoo sisters, Zoe Sugg, Marcus Butler, and more -- is stepping down from his post as CEO, effectively immediately.
“Eleven years ago, with Costa Coffee as my office, I founded a talent business,” Smales said in a statement. “Over the years, we have published books, made movies, built brands, traveled the world, opened offices on three continents, made TV shows, broken records, laughed a lot, cried a bit, and everything in between. It’s been a joy and a privilege to be allowed to do all this with people I love spending time with.”

A six-month-old hair accessories brand called Insert Name Here -- which vends wigs, extensions, and hair pieces on the web -- has clinched a seven-figure annual run-rate after being founded in November. Social influencers, its three founders say, have been formative to the startup’s success. And the three founders know a thing or two about social influencers.
Insert Name Here (Inh) is looking to follow in the footsteps of socially savvy stalwarts like clothing retailer Fashion Nova and ColourPop Cosmetics, where two of Inh’s co-founders -- Jordynn Wynn and Sharon Pak -- were the first two employees.
Wynn and Pak helped Colourpop become a major player in today’s beauty industry -- thanks in no small part to its mastery of Instagram. Early on, for instance, ColourPop latched onto viral hashtags to amass hordes of followers, sponsored influencer posts, and eventually forged full-fledged product collabs with the likes of Bretman Rock,...

Zoe Sugg, the U.K.-based YouTube phenom who has also launched her own bath brand dubbed Zoella, is partnering with fellow indie beauty firm ColourPop on a makeup collection.
The brunch-themed collection -- launching on Feb. 27 exclusively on ColourPop'd website -- will feature an eyeshadow palette, eyeliners, lipsticks, lip liners, blush, and highlighter, according to Bustle. The concept of the collection abuts neutral hues with pops of color. Prices range from $5 for eyeliners and lip liners to $18 for the eyeshadow palette.
In a crowded beauty vlogger landscape, Sugg, 28, has long been a standout -- with 11 million subscribers on her flagship channel (that she has not posted on in roughly seven months) and almost 5 million subscribers on a second hub dedicated to personal vlogs. James Charles fans likely know that the YouTube beauty phenom recently purchased a new house -- though unfortunately, it turns out, some followers appear to have tracked down the 19-year-old’s address and are showing up at his front door unannounced.
Like many YouTubers before him, Charles sternly asked his followers yesterday -- which totals 11.4 million YouTube subscribers and 11.5 million Instagram followers -- to stop coming to his home. “I will not hug you, I will not take a photo with you, and I absolutely will not sign your [eyeshadow] palette,” he tweeted. “It is extremely disrespectful and makes me feel very unsafe in my own home. Respect people’s privacy, it’s really not that hard.”
Apparently, though, it's a violation that has become a common occurrence for digital celebrities, whose fame is predicated on fostering a sense of familiarity. In the past, YouTube couples like Zoe Sugg and Alfie Deyes...

YouTube star Joe Sugg, who is also a noted graphic novelist and talent management company proprietor, has reportedly signed on to the upcoming season of Strictly Come Dancing -- a U.K. reality competition series in the vein of ABC's Dancing With The Stars.
In the hit BBC One show, celebrities are partnered with professional ballroom dancers, and compete via themed performances week to week, which are scored by a panel of expert judges. Metro speculates that the series could stand to gain some serious social starpower if Sugg does indeed opt to compete, given that several of his YouTube-famous friends and family members would presumably attend live tapings, including sister Zoe Sugg and best friend-slash-business partner Caspar Lee.

A takedown piece in The Guardian last Friday about the massively popular U.K lifestyle vlogger Zoe Sugg has ignited a firestorm within the YouTube community, and illuminated a seemingly growing animosity between ‘old media’ (more specifically, print journalists) and the vanguards of the digital age.
The Guardian’s piece, titled Zoe Sugg: The Vlogger Blamed For Declining Teenage Literacy, refers to a recent study in the U.K. that concluded that the enormous popularity of Sugg’s novels -- a series dubbed Girl Online -- is resulting in regressing reading levels for children. Girl Online, which had the biggest first-week sales in British history upon its debut in November 2014, per The Guardian, is not as challenging as other popular books read by kids -- including the Harry Potter series and The Hobbit, according to the study. Therefore, says education and social research professor Keith Topping, Sugg is responsible...

Zoe Sugg has unveiled a new collection within her enormously successful two-year-old bath and body brand, Zoella Beauty, which the beauty vlogger creates alongside British manufacturer Slg. Dubbed Sweet Inspirations, the latest collection -- which has been in the works for over a year, Sugg said -- are inspired by macarons and sweet almonds.
The collection represents Zoella Beauty’s third collection since its founding, and will comprise a body mist, body cream, bath and shower milk, a fragranced bath fizzer, bath salts, a shimmer balm, and several cosmetics pouches, ranging in price from roughly $7.00 to $17.00. Packaging takes its design inspiration from the 1920s and French pastry shops, according to Sugg. The collection debuts this Friday at UK retailers Feel Unique and Superdrug.

The life of a YouTube star isn’t always as easy as it seems. While mid-level celebrities have to deal with cobbling together a decent income that belies their popularity, superstars have a whole other set of safety concerns with which to deal. And recently, no one knows this better than YouTube stars and couple Zoe Sugg (aka Zoella) and Alfie Deyes (aka PointlessBlog). The two video creators recently took to Twitter to ask fans to stop showing up uninvited at the doorstep of their Brighton, UK home.
According to a tweet from Zoella, the UK’s The Daily Mail was the first newspaper to reveal the couple’s Brighton address. Starting December 28, 2015, Deyes took to Twitter, calling out parents who took their kids to his and Zoella’s home just so they could take pictures through the window. Deyes pleads for fans to “go away” and “come to a...

A year ago, the online video and book publishing industries barely knew each other. Then, in November 2014, British YouTube star Zoe Sugg released Girl Online, and a new trend was born. Sugg’s novel was an instant hit, and its success has set off a wave of books authored by digital media celebrities.
One company that has benefitted from this trend is Keywords Press, a Simon & Schuster imprint that focuses on the online-video-content-creator-to-published-author pipeline. Three Keywords Press employees--Ariele Fredman, Jhanteigh Kupihea, and Jackie Jou--and Natalie Novak of talent agency UTA discussed the ways they have streamlined a process that combines an old media format with new media stars.
As Novak explained, creators have led the charge into the publishing world as they look to expand to new platforms. “There was a want for more talent to write books as we explored more opportunities out there for them,” she said. While...

Madame Tussauds New York just unveiled its first wax figure based on a social media celebrity. The wax museum debuted its figurine of YouTube superstar Jenna Marbles on October 26, 2015.
Marbles originally announced her impending wax likeness back in July 2015 through an Instagram video of her behind-the-scenes model creation process with Madame Tussauds. At the time, the 29-year-old YouTube celebrity, who boasts over 15 million subscribers on YouTube, told her fans they’d soon be able to take selfies with her wax figure and “grope da butt” all they wanted. Now, they can actually do that with Marbles’ likeness, which is the first selfie-taking wax figure at Madame Tussauds New York. The YouTuber’s wax model is also the first-ever Madame Tussauds figure to boast its own social media presence where selfies with fans and visitors are posted.

When a recent magazine all about YouTubers was unleashed, it was met with genuine confusion by anyone over the age of 25 who doesn't have kids. If you didn't already know, vlogging is a big deal.
Take Alfie Deyes, who is the boyfriend of fellow vlogger Zoe Sugg aka Zoella, the UK's highest-profile blogger whose novel was the fastest-selling debut ever last year. When the two appear together in one video, it's the YouTube equivalent of Adele duetting with Beyoncé. They're getting their own Madame Tussauds waxworks and even formed part of Band Aid 30, for crying out loud.
He's become one of the most popular stars among children and young adults for his PointlessBlog channel, a series which sees him chat about his life and do fun challenges. His viewership would make many digital channels jealous - for instance, his most recent video has over 600,000 views in just four days. He's...

The annual Teen Choice Awards aired on Fox on August 16th, and a number of “Choice Web Stars” went home with their own surfboard trophies. The big winners were Bethany Mota, who won Choice Web Star: Female for the second year in a row, and Cameron Dallas, who won Choice Web Star: Male.
Dallas, whose 8.2 million followers are good for 11th-best on Vine, also won the award for Choice Viner. His wins come eight months after he rode his teen heartthrob status to the box office with Expelled, a film that sold well on video on demand platforms.
The Teen Choice Awards also give out a “Choice YouTuber” award, which this year went to Kian Lawley. Additional categories highlight specific web genres like music, comedy, and fashion/beauty; the 2015 victors in those areas were Shawn Mendes, Colleen Ballinger, and Zoe Sugg, respectively. Forget book deals and Hollywood films: YouTube stars are getting their own wax figures nowadays, too. And the next digital phenomenon to join the figurine crowd is Jenna Marbles. The 28-year-old YouTube vlogger will get her own likeness made from wax courtesy of Madame Tussauds New York.
Marbles made the announcement of her upcoming statue via her Instagram account. The digital star, who boasts over 15 million subscribers on her YouTube channel, also included a short behind-the-scenes video of her model creation process. Marbles said she is “so beyond honored” her wax figure will be on display at Madame Tussauds, whose Instagram account noted Marbles’ wax likeness will be its first-ever selfie-taking statue.
Marbles isn’t the first YouTube star to obtain wax figure status. Back in April 2015, British vloggers Zoe Sugg (aka Zoella) and Alfie Deyes announced they would have their own wax statues made for Madame Tussauds in London.

VidCon brought hundreds of real-life online video stars to Anaheim, but at the same time, an adjacent event featured the first two YouTube stars made entire of wax. At both Defy Media’s VidCon suite and the nearby “Viewseum” in Anaheim, Madame Tussauds debuted wax figures of Smosh duo Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla.
The wax figures, which Madame Tussauds first announced in May 2015, are the first ones to ever feature YouTube stars. “What an honor it is to be recognized and chosen for Madame Tussauds first YouTube wax figures in their 250 year history,” said the Smosh guys in a press release. “To have the big reveal take place on the red carpet at the premiere of our first movie just made this eventful day even more memorable. We’re excited to bring them along to VidCon and can’t think of a more fitting venue to show off our wax selves!

Madame Tussauds London will soon add a new breed of celebrity to its lineup of famous wax models. The museum will include two new wax figures to its collection based on YouTube stars Zoe Sugg (known as Zoella to the online video masses) and her boyfriend Alfie Deyes (aka PointlessBlog).
Sugg and Deyes, dubbed “Zalfie” by their loyal followers, will be re-created in a setting already familiar to the YouTubers’ viewers -- the duo’s spare bedroom in their Brighton-based flat. The wax figures of the two digital celebrities will sit on the bed, uploading videos to their respective channels. “Zalfie” will join the ranks of wax models at Tussauds inspired by more traditional entertainment and cultural icons like movie stars, sports figures, and historical shakers and movers.
