The conventional Hindi film heroine is often one-dimensional, impossibly perfect and confined to song and dance routines. A few films in the recent past have however challenged these notions on the big screen as well as on Ott platforms by portraying women in all their depth and complexity. Here are a few of such memorable characters.
Upasana in ‘Axone’
Upasana (Sayani Gupta) is part of the North-Eastern migrant community in Delhi. Her body language and habitual diffidence show how guarded and vulnerable she feels in a milieu that treats her and her friends as outsiders. Yet, as the film progresses, we see Upasana dealing with her love life, her conflicted feelings about a friend who was in a relationship with her boyfriend and her own insecurities with increasing confidence. Her determination to cook a special dish to celebrate a wedding finally wins the day and her innocence and strength endear...

ReviewDirected by Umesh Bist, ‘Pagglait’ takes the greatest tragedy that can befall a woman in Indian society and turns it into her salvation. Sowmya RajendranPagglait, now streaming on Netflix, begins with a funeral. A young man, Astik, is dead. As his immediate family mourns him and relatives stream into the sprawling, ancient haveli in a small town, his widow is lying on bed... and checking Facebook. Directed by Umesh Bist, Pagglait takes the greatest tragedy that can befall a woman in Indian society and turns it into her salvation. A woman in India is considered blessed if she dies when still a ‘sumangali’; stripped of its sentimentality, it simply means a woman is better off dead when she’s still married than live the life of a widow. While sati is outlawed and practices like shaving a widow’s head and forcing her to wear white all her life are...

Photo: ‘Pagglait’/Netflix Within the first minute, ‘Pagglait’ shows us a deeply vast and detailed world. Big, soaring landscape shots are our introduction before we suddenly cut to a close-up shot of someone’s bottom on a bicycle seat. This large contrast immediately grabs the viewer and takes hold of them for the next two hours. Set in such a heavily populated country like India, ‘Pagglait’ tells a specific story but is able to make it universal. In writer-director Umesh Bist’s best film to date, Sanya Malhotra stars as Sandhya, a widow who recently lost her late husband, Astik. To the surprise of those around her, Malhotra is unable to grieve and never cries which sums up the basic plot of the movie. As the film progresses, we dive deeper into Malhotra’s psyche and begin to understand her more and more. While her grief is different, more internal than external,...

Pagglait the film is just like its protagonist Sandhya. It doesn't behave the way it is expected to.
You would think the story of a just-married young woman who is widowed right at the onset would be sombre, all the more because the societal subjugation she tackles is focus of the plot. The film however refuses to mourn, just like Sandhya. With a quirky spin, writer-director Umesh Bist chooses to unfold his story as a comic drama. Like its heroine, the film's mood stays irreverent, unaffected by the grim reality that backdrops the narrative.
Sanya Malhotra plays the smalltown widow Sandhya with incredible authenticity. She is alone in her room, amidst a house full of grieving relatives,...

Mumbai, Jan 19 (Ians) Actor-filmmaker Rajesh Tailang, who has directed a short film during lockdown titled Trivedi Ji, has said that he would like to direct a feature film once in his life.
"I haven't planned to direct a feature film yet, but I want to make at least one feature film in my life," said Tailang, while interacting with Ians at a special screening of Trivedi Ji in the city.
Tailand has his YouTube channel named Theatre Talkies, about which he said: "We make short films for the channel. I do a poetry show on it called 'Chand Pe Chai'. Annup Sonii hosts a show on different stories called 'Suni Unsuni: Stories with Anup Soni'. I made a few documentaries on it as well. It's my seventh short film. I decided to make films because sometimes we get some time off from acting projects, so in that period I wanted to do some creative work.

Film: "O Teri"; Actors: Pulkit Samrat, Bilal Amrohi, Anupam Kher and Sara Jane Dias; Director: Umesh Bist; Rating: ** - masala-mix version of 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron'.
Luckily, this is not an official remake of Kundan Shah's classic "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron". If it was, the makers of the original could have sued for defamation.

"Salman suggested me to make a film on this story," Atul told reporters here Tuesday at the screening of the film.

The trailer of the film, O Teri, presented by Salman Khan talks about two boys, Prantabh Pratap (Pp) & Anand Ishvaram Devadutt Subramanium (AIDS, in short) who are ordinary journalists doing ordinary stories, facing ordinary pressures of life when a quirky turn of events changes their lives.
Both the boys are in search of a big scam to get attention at work and show their capabilities which they get and it is called the Asian Olympics.
Insiders are now drawing similarities with the Common Wealth Games (2010) and all the said scams revolving around the event. Another point of similarity is the bridge that is seen falling in the trailer. When contacted the director of the film, Umesh Bist said, “The entire film is inspired by real life events. However I would not like to reveal them now.”
The film is slated to release on 28th March 2014.

When filmmaker Nikhil Advani met the Showman Subhash Ghai on Saturday to narrate his interpretation of Ghai's 1983 blockbuster Hero, Nikhil never imagined Ghai would respond so warmly to the new-age Hero. Apparently, Nikhil has completely re-written Hero, giving a new-age twist to every character and situation in the original. Says a source close to the project, "Salman Khan who produces the Hero remake wanted every character and situation from the original to be changed. While Jackie Shroff was a soft-hearted goonda in Ghai's Hero, Sooraj Pancholi would be a hardened criminal in the remake. The entire original script has been dismantled and deconstructed by Nikhil Advani and his co-writer Umesh Bist. Nikhil went to Ghai as a gesture of respect for the creator of the original material. He didn't expect his re-mixed Hero would get such a thumping approval from Subhashji." Normally, remakes leave the original directors very pissed off.
