David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

Shrinking co-creator Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso) is stepping in front of the camera in Season 2.
Sources tell Deadline there had been multiple attempts to have Goldstein appear in the Apple dramedy but things didn’t pan out. When the perfect role came along—which btw is currently top secret—he couldn’t say no. He is billed as a guest star in Season 2, which is currently in production.
Shrinking follows grieving therapist Jimmy (Jason Segel) who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives … including his own. In addition to Segel, the series stars Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Lukita Maxwell, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie and Ted McGinley.

Of the core “Sex and the City” characters, no one has changed more than Miranda from the series’ launch in 1998 to the 2021 sequel show, “And Just Like That.”
“She is the character who had the most evolution,” “And Just Like That” co-costume designer Molly Rogers said in the latest episode of TheWrap’s “How I Did It” series, sponsored by HBO.
“Miranda — so much of her personality was being an attorney,” Cynthia Nixon, who plays the character, added. “And so she was decidedly unglamorous at the beginning of the show. And then she became more glamorous as it went on. And then certainly in the movies and all that stuff.”
In a conversation with Rogers and the show’s co-costume designer Danny Santiago, Nixon discusses how the new series finds her character on the brink of divorce with her husband Steve (David Eigenberg), pursuing a Masters degree in human rights law,...

Hello, lovers! Some good news from the New York City girls. “And Just Like That …” is coming back for another season.
HBO Max announced the show’s Season 2 pickup on Tuesday.
The series is from executive producer Michael Patrick King, and stars (and is executive produced by) Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis.
According to the streamer, “And Just Like That …” had the strongest debut of any HBO Max Original show in the streamer’s history.
“I am delighted and excited to tell more stories about these vibrant, bold characters — played by these powerful, amazing actors,” King said in a statement. “The fact is, we’re all thrilled. ‘And Just like That…’ our ‘Sex’ life is back.”
The show follows the lives of Sjp’s Carrie, Nixon’s Miranda, and Davis’ Charlotte in their 50s. It’s predecessor, “Sex and The City,” focused on their lives in their 30s.

HBO Max's And Just Like That... is certainly off to a tumultuous start, but the shocking plot twist in the premiere episode isn't enough to take our attention away from the biggest changes in the Sex and the City franchise. The original HBO series made a major splash on TV, paving the way for it to run for six seasons and set up its two highly anticipated films. But despite the show being set in New York City - a city whose population is 42 percent white and 24 percent Black - it hardly reflected that reality.
When Sex and the City's so-called "diversity" problem became abundantly clear, the creators of the show set out to ensure its revival didn't repeat the same mistake. The original show's legacy was largely shaped by the perspectives of four white women, and it failed to add any people of color as series regulars or properly represent LGBTQ+ people.

When the cast of HBO Max’s Sex and the City sequel And Just Like That… hit the red carpet in New York City on Wednesday night, everything was different.
After more than two decades since the original series premiered, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis reunited but this time they invited a new and more diverse cast and team of writers to play in this fan-favorite universe that aims to mirror what the world looks more accurately.
“I think the only thing worse than a lack of diversity is faux diversity or diversity for diversity’s sake,” series writer Keli Goff told Deadline at the premiere during a conversation that also included fellow writers Rachna Fruchbom and Samantha Irby. “You never know until you get started [on a project] because all of us have been in those situations where someone wants to hire us but then nobody cares what we have to say.

“Whenever I see the word ‘sex’ nowadays, it’s usually written in pink, not black,” Michael Patrick King said gleefully on a boundless red carpet, stretched through the lobby of the Museum of Modern Art on Wednesday evening in New York City, where “And Just Like That,” HBO’s revival of “Sex in the City,” held its world premiere.
“There’s a reason for that,” the series creator said, while celebrity guests like Matthew Broderick, Andrew Rannells, Anna Wintour, Gayle King and Andy Cohen walked the carpet. “‘Sex in the City’ offered a new kind of television. Our calling card was the word ‘sex,’ but our subjects were real women. Now we get to do it again.”

We have our first clue as to how Sex and the City is going on without Samantha Jones.
HBO Max’s upcoming revival, officially announced last month, is bringing back the stars of the original Emmy-winning hit — minus Kim Cattrall’s Samantha. But how will the show explain the absence of one of the show’s core four? Star Sarah Jessica Parker and writer Michael Patrick King are the creative forces behind the sequel, and “they’re not trying to re-do Sex and the City,” HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys emphasizes to TVLine. “They’re not trying to...

Two long-running ABC comedy series, Modern Family and Fresh off the Boat, ended their runs this past season. Both have been exploring spinoffs.
The Fresh Off the Boat offshoot was more fully formed. Set up as a potential backdoor pilot episode of Fotb this past season, the project, tentatively titled Magic Motor Inn, was written by Rachna Fruchbom, and centers around an Indian family whose daughter attends school with Eddie. The plated spinoff episode guests starred Preity Zinta and Vir Das as the parents.

Fresh Off the Boat will not be back for a seventh season. The family comedy series end its run with an hour-long series finale on Friday, February 21 at 9 Pm.
The decision was expected. Ratings for the series have not been particularly strong this fall on Friday. What’s more, most TV cast contracts are up after six seasons, and judging by star Constance Wu’s reaction to the Season 6 renewal in May, few expected that she would be eager to continue when her deal is up in May as her feature career had taken off with Crazy Rich Asians and Hustlers.
Other key auspices also have moved on or preparing their new chapter. Fotb creator Nahnatchka Khan earlier this year left her longtime studio home, 20th Century Fox TV, which produces Fotb, for a deal at Universal TV. And star Randall Park recently launched a production company, signing a first-look...

The potential Fresh Off the Boat spinoff is taking shape. Bollywood star Preity G Zinta and Indian actor-comedian Vir Das (Whiskey Cavalier) have been tapped to guest star in an upcoming episode of Fresh Off the Boat, which could lead to a spinoff series, tentatively titled Magic Motor Inn.
Written by Fresh Off the Boat writer-producer Rachna Fruchbom, the episode centers around an Indian family whose daughter attends school with Eddie. The girl’s parents, DC and Meena, are played by Das and Zinta, respectively.
The episode from Fotb’s current sixth season, which starts filming on Nov. 18, is not a backdoor pilot like is the common practice, including the black-ish episode last season that served as a backdoor pilot for spinoff series mixed-ish. But it would serve as template for the proposed spinoff, Magic Motor Inn, which would star Zinta and Das. If the network opts to move forward,...
