Amanda Mattes is a Costume Designer and Creator from the United States. Born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Mattes moved to Birmingham, Alabama with her family in 1990, later attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Theatre Department- where she received a B.A. with Honors in Theatrical Design, and minors in Studio Art and Japanese Language and Culture.
In 2006, Mattes lived in India for 9 months, traveling and working in a bronze casting facility. Her background in metal sculpture originally began in 2003, while apprenticing at Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham.
After completing her undergraduate degree, Mattes moved to Massachusetts, where she worked at Shakespeare & Company as a Costume Designer and Maker. In 2011, she moved to the United Kingdom to attend the University of Edinburgh's College of Art, for her M.F.A. in Performance Costume Design. While in the U.K., she worked on several films and television shows.
In early 2014, Mattes moved back to the United States to work at the Santa Fe Opera as a Costume Cutter. She is currently the Costume Director and Resident Costume Designer at the Birmingham Children's Theatre.
