This is what we call a landslide. All of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are confident “Game of Thrones” is about to tie the four-time record for Best Drama Series that’s currently held by “Hill Street Blues” (1981-84), “L.A. Law”, “The West Wing” (2000-03) and “Mad Men” (2008-11). That’s right — there’s not a single outlier in the bunch that thinks anything else can prevail on September 22, but there’s slightly good news for BBC America’s “Killing Eve” as that has the most #2 votes from our pundits.

Check this out. Just two weeks ago only one of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets predicted a Best Comedy Series victory for Amazon’s “Fleabag.” Now that number has jumped up to five (out of 23). Joining Robert Rorke (New York Post) are fellow pundits Jen Chaney (Vulture), Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) and Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com). What might this mean for front-runner “Veep”?
Phoebe Waller-Bridge‘s series based on her one-woman show exploded in nominations for its second season, receiving 11 total after being completely snubbed back in 2017 for its debut episodes. Not only is Waller-Bridge nominated at the Emmys for starring in the comedy, but she received another for writing the show’s Season 2 premiere and two more for producing both “Fleabag” and “Killing Eve.”

Streaming giant Netflix has yet to win a series trophy at the Emmy Awards, but that could all change this year if Gold Derby’s Experts are correct. Fifteen of these 20 prognosticators from major media outlets believe that “When They See Us” will claim victory for Best Limited Series on September 22. Ava DuVernay‘s intimate look at the 1989 Central Park jogger case, which delves into the investigations, the trials, the incarcerations and the ultimate releases of who are now known as the Exonerated 5, streamed on May 31, the final day of eligibility for the 2019 Emmys.

This year’s Emmy race for Best Comedy Series is no laughing matter, according to Gold Derby’s Experts from major media outlets. No less than four shows are predicted to win the top trophy at the 2019 ceremony: HBO’s “Veep,” Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” HBO’s “Barry” and Amazon’s “Fleabag.” While each laffer enjoys key support from our industry insiders, “Veep” has leading 5/1 odds to win the Emmy election on September 22 for its seventh and final season.
These 12 Emmy Experts predict “Veep” will win its fourth trophy for Best Comedy Series after previously prevailing in 2015-17: Eric Deggans (NPR), Chris Harnick (E!), Matthew Jacobs (HuffPo), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Wilson Morales (BlackFilm), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Christopher Rosen (TVGuide.com), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine), Michael Schneider (Variety), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Ken Tucker (Yahoo).

If Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are correct, then “Game of Thrones” is about to tie the four-time record for Best Drama Series that’s currently held by “Hill Street Blues” (1981-84), “L.A. Fox News Channel is known best for primetime hosts like Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson, but its top executive is also enthusiastic about “The Five,” a panel show that airs each day at 5 p.m.
“No matter where it went, it was the best decision I ever made as a programming executive,” says Suzanne Scott, Fox News’ chief executive, in an interview. These days, Dana Perino, Greg Gutfeld, Juan Williams and Jesse Watters host the show with a guest sitting in each day.
Originally conceived in 2011 as a program that would give more air time to a bevy of Fox News contributors who did not have their own roost on the schedule, “The Five” has delivered for Fox News in times both easy and difficult. The Emmy for Best Comedy Series remains strictly a two-way race, according to the forecasts of the vast majority of thousands of Gold Derby users. But not everyone agrees on which horse will win that race. The Expert journalists we’ve polled give the slight edge to “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” but most of our users — including last year’s highest-scoring users — think it will be “Atlanta,” tilting the overall momentum in favor of the FX series.
As of this writing 14 of our 26 Experts are betting on a “Maisel” victory: Debra Birnbaum (Variety), Jen Chaney (Vulture), Debbie Day (Rotten Tomatoes), Eric Deggans (NPR), Bonnie Fuller (Hollywood Life), Pete Hammond (Deadline Hollywood), Chris Harnick (E!), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Ed Martin (Media Village), Robert Rorke (New York Post), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Ken Tucker (Yahoo), Matt Webb Mitovich (TVLine) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).

Twenty-three of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets have piped in with their Best Drama Actor predictions, and things are still looking good for Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”). Last year’s winner in this category is expected to repeat by the slimmest of margins over perpetual nominee Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”). Twenty-three of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets have chimed in with their Best Drama Actress predictions, and Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) is the favorite to win her second consecutive Emmy. After losing six times for “Mad Men,” Moss now finds herself on a roll with the TV academy as she took home two trophies last year for acting in and producing “The Handmaid’s Tale.” While she’s the favorite with 15 Experts picking her to win, two other leading ladies have the support of 4 Experts apiece: Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) and Keri Russell (“The Americans”). “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” is the heavy favorite to win the Emmy for Best Variety Talk Series for the third year in a row. After Jon Stewart‘s “Daily Show” won for the last time in 2015 Oliver picked up his mantle, claiming the prize in 2016 and 2017. Will he string together a decade of wins just like Stewart did, or will he fall to one of his fellow “Daily Show” alums in this race? Stephen Colbert is itching to get back in the winner’s circle.
Colbert won Best Variety Series for “The Colbert Report” in 2013 and 2014. After 2015 he left that Comedy Central series to take over for David Letterman as the host of CBS’s “Late Show.” Colbert’s version didn’t catch on with Emmy voters right away; it was snubbed in 2016 when it was first eligible. But it broke through in 2017 along with noms for its writing and directing.

“Saturday Night Live” standout Kate McKinnon is the odds-on favorite to win the Emmy for Best Comedy Supporting Actress for the third year in a row. That’s according to the combined odds of more than 1,000 Gold Derby users, but not everyone agrees. While McKinnon has the most support from the Expert journalists we’ve polled, our Editors give the edge to Alex Borstein for her scene-stealing performance in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
McKinnon plays multiple characters on the late-night sketch comedy series, which may explain her appeal: it gives voters the chance to reward several performances for the price of one. She currently leads our predictions with odds of 5/4 and support from nine Experts: Debra Birnbaum (Variety), Chris Harnick (E!), Ed Martin (Media Village), Kaitlin Thomas (TVGuide.com), Anne Thompson (IndieWire), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Ken Tucker (Yahoo!), Adnan Virk (ESPN) and Glenn Whipp (La Times).

“Legion” is returning to FX for a second season this spring, and the network has announced the official date and time of its premiere: Tuesday, April 3, at 10:00pm.
The series is based on the title Marvel superhero who in the comics is a member of the “X-Men,” but this is not your everyday comic book adaptation. Developed for TV by Emmy winning “Fargo” mastermind Noah Hawley, much of the action takes place in the recesses of its main character’s fractured mind. Dan Stevens stars as David Haller, who lived in a mental institution until he discovered that what he thought was schizophrenia may in fact be advanced mental powers. As he learned more about his abilities he was also forced to confront Lenny (Aubrey Plaza), who at first seemed to be the memory of a close friend but turned out to be something far more sinister.

Why can’t Buffy the Vampire Slayer win a Vulture TV bracket? We have reason to wonder. For the second time in three years, Buffy the Vampire Slayer made it past the first round of a Vulture TV bracket only to get nudged out before it could cross the finish line. In 2012’s Vulture Drama Derby, it got past round one (besting Deadwood, no slouch of a contender) only to get knocked out by Mad Men. (The final round, which I adjudicated, came down to The Sopranos vs. The Wire, with The Wire very narrowly winning.) In this year’s contest to determine the greatest high-school show, Buffy got a lot closer, battling all the way to round three, where it lost to Friday Night Lights. Ken Tucker, who wrote the essay for that matchup, clearly struggled to choose one over the other, noting, among other things, that "Friday Night...

Six of our Emmyologists -- Robert Bianco (USA Today), Debra Birnbaum (Variety), Joyce Eng (TV Guide), Ken Tucker (Yahoo) and Gold Derby's Tom O'Neil and Paul Sheehan -- are in agreement that "Modern Family" will win Best Comedy Series for a record sixth year running; Matthew Jacobs (Huffington Post) opts for "Veep." However, there is disagreement as to what will take Best Drama Series. Three of our Experts -- Birnbaum, Eng and Jacobs -- expect that the Emmys will give a farewell hug to four-time past champ "Mad Men." Another three -- O'Neil, Sheehan, Tucker -- are predicting that "House of Cards" will win for the first time. And Bianco forecasts a victory for "Game of Thrones" after four straight...

On its TV-focused vertical, Yahoo offers articles, photos, and videos for curious viewers. Now, thanks to a new offering, Yahoo TV will synergize with one of the online media corporation's other properties. On the new Yahoo TV site, which is laid out in a grid-like fashion, visitors can find lists, recaps, previews, and other news items related to the most popular shows on TV. Here, for example, is a behind-the-scenes look at the final episode of Parks and Recreation, which aired on NBC on February 24th:
As Variety notes, the visual design of the Yahoo TV Digital Magazine is a nice fit for Tumblr, which Yahoo acquired in May 2013 for $1.1 billion. Since that deal closed, we've heard rumors that Yahoo will use the blogging site to compete with YouTube, but even if that plan is never realized,...

It sounds strange to say about a show I haven't watched regularly in two years — and barely at all in its final season — and stopped consistently enjoying long before that, but there was a time when I loved "Sons of Anarchy" about as much as anything on TV. Back in the day, Kurt Sutter's biker "Hamlet" was one of the shows I most enjoyed watching, writing about, and debating with critics and fans alike. In its second season in particular, it was one of the very best shows on television (on that year's Top 10 list, I had it only a couple of spots behind "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad") and every bit the Next Great FX Drama you would expect from Sutter, who apprenticed on "The Shield" and penned many of that show's most memorable (and/or disgusting) moments. In retrospect, that second season — pitting Samcro against a band...

Will "Breaking Bad" end its six-year run in a blaze of glory by claiming a second consecutive Emmy for Best Drama Series? Eleven of our 13 Experts are predicting the AMC criminal thriller to triumph again for its final season, which aired last summer. If it manages to do, it will be that rarity among Emmy champs. Among those drama series to lose for their last seasons were: 2005 winner "Lost" in 2010; four-time champ "The West Wing" in 2006, and "Friday Night Lights" (2011). The most recent drama series to prevail for its final season was "The Sopranos" (2007). There's a sharp divide in the Primetime Emmy race for Best Comedy Series. Nine out of 13 experts polled expect "Modern Family" to win for the fourth year in a row: Robert Bianco (USA Today), Debra Birnbaum (TV Guide Magazine), Scott Feinberg (Hollywood Reporter), Daniel Manu (TV Without Pity), Steve Pond (The Wrap), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine), Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood), Ken Tucker, and Glenn Whipp (La Times). But has fatigue set in for "Modern Family" after three consecutive victories in the top race? Five out of our eight Gold Derby editors think so, betting on first-time nominee "Louie": Rob Licuria, Matt Noble, Tom O'Neil, David Schnelwar, and Paul Sheehan. "Louie," which airs on FX, would be only the second cable series to win the prize, following HBO's "Sex and the City" in 2001, and it would be the first basic-cable program to do so. Four more experts have chimed in with their Emmy predictions: Debra Birnbaum (TV Guide Magazine), Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly), Mike Cidoni (Associated Press), and Ken Tucker. Two of them -- Rice and Cidoni -- are betting on an upset victory for "The Big Bang Theory" as Best Comedy. The top-rated comedy, which recently finished its sixth season on CBS, is nominated for the third time in the category, but only ranks fourth in our overall odds. Two -- Birnbaum and Cidoni -- are also predicting a changing of the guard in the race for Best Drama, where they bet on "Breaking Bad" to win for the first time for its fifth season. The acclaimed AMC series begins airing its final eight episodes in August. But Rice disagrees, instead picking "Game of Thrones" to win top honors for its third season. The HBO drama leads all TV series with 16 total nominations this year.

Last year, the versatile "Saturday Night Live" comedian Bill Hader reaped a surprise bid for Supporting Comedy Actor. This year, Hader makes the cut with four experts -- Tucker again as well as Pete Hammond (Deadline Hollywood), Steve Pond (The Wrap), Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly) -- as well as editor Darrin Dortch. While this level of support gives him odds of only 33/1 which puts him in ninth place, he could well pull off another upset, especially as this was his final season on "SNL." Of the 13 Emmy experts polled by Gold Derby, Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly) stands alone in predicting "Game of Thrones" to win the top race for TV's Best Drama Series. And she's also one of just three experts -- along with Ken Tucker and Gold Derby's Tom O'Neil -- taking a gamble on Kerry Washington ("Scandal") to prevail in the tough Drama Actress category. See Lynette Rice's full predictions here. Compare her predix to our other Emmy experts here -- see the charts. If Rice is correct about Washington winning, she'll be the first African-American woman ever to take home a trophy in this category.
