Michael Winterbottom said that title cards preceding the ending credits of his new film “Greed” were censored ahead of the movie’s release by the head of Sony Pictures International.
Winterbottom’s film is a satire of the world of high fashion designed to call attention to the wealth inequality between the richest fashion moguls and the lowest level employees who make the clothes. In an interview with The Guardian Monday, Winterbottom says that Sony Pictures International head of production Laine Kline refused to allow the director to include a series of title cards at the end of the film that criticized specific, individual brands.
According to The Guardian, a test screening of “Greed” in March ended with facts about how much workers in Myanmar and Bangladesh earned working in factories compared to the net worth of the owners of fashion brands H&m and Zara. Winterbottom says that Kline refused...

UK writer-director Michael Winterbottom has taken aim at Sony for cuts he says the studio made to his new movie Greed, which debuted at Toronto and rolls out this fall and winter.
The prolific UK filmmaker, well known for The Trip franchise and movies including The Killer Inside Me, expressed frustration in a frank interview with The Guardian over cuts insisted on by the studio, whose international film division financed the feature with UK broadcaster Film4.
Greed, starring Steve Coogan, is a satire on the world of the super-rich. It homes in on the excesses of a fashion tycoon, who is based on controversial UK billionaire Philip Green. Also starring are Isla Fisher, Asa Butterfield, Sophie Cookson, David Mitchell, Stephen Fry and Shirley Henderson.
According to the piece, the original version of the film ended with a series of cards spelling out how little money workers earn in sweatshops in Myanmar and Bangladesh,...

Michael Winterbottom’s entertaining mockumentary about a high-street fashion tycoon presents a hideous carnival of obscene wealth, vanity and moral squalor
That exhilaratingly prolific film-maker Michael Winterbottom – working with additional material from Sean Gray from The Thick of It – has served up a breezy, funny, unsubtle scattershot satire-melodrama all about the moral squalor of the super-rich. They are epitomised by a fictional high-street fashion mogul called Sir Richard “Greedy” McCreadie as he prepares for a monumentally tasteless, Fyre festival-ish, Roman-themed 60th birthday party on the plutocrats’ island of Mykonos. (Rome in Greece? Why not?)
McCreadie has just suffered a nightmare of bad publicity following a catastrophic performance in front of a parliamentary select committee, and all the celebs are starting to pull out of his bash. One star who will be there is Clarence, a real, live lion for a re-creation of the Coloseum scene from the movie Gladiator. There...
