When, in a Feb. 7 report, short-sellers eviscerated Soho House — pronouncing it “a zero,” prophesying it would “meet the same fate” as notorious IPO flameout WeWork — the company’s crisis of cool had already been years in the making. The publicly listed private members club, a seeming oxymoron bearing the sticker symbol Shco, has for years faced brickbats about how it shed its exclusive appeal: It morphed from a Hollywood-favored hangout with just a few outposts in London, Manhattan and Los Angeles into an international empire of 42 locations with a quarter million dues-paying clients. But now, along with serious allegations about its accounting and critiques of its debt levels, the club is also fending off mortifying questions about overexpansion, overcrowding and brand dilution.

Soho Home is expanding to the West Coast.
Known for its members-only luxury clubs located all across major cities around the globe, Soho House’s most recent venture Soho Home is opening up its first Los Angeles store. With the original Soho Home located in New York City’s Meatpacking District and another recently-opened studio in London’s Notting Hill, this marks the brand’s third store location.
Nestled on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood, the luxury interior design and home furnishings brand officially opened its doors for business this week. It’s a 9,308-square-foot, two-story space, welcoming all patrons to enjoy the studio, stick around, eat, drink and shop around the Soho Home collection.
“They’re called studios for a reason,” Soho House managing director of retail Aalish Yorke-Long told The Hollywood Reporter. “They’re not just shops — that’s not a word we use internally. It is all...

First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes … a screening of Elf!
Nick Jones shared an adorable video of new wife Priyanka Chopra watching the hit holiday movie for the first time on Monday.
“Her first time watching Elf,” he captioned the Instagram video, along with a heart-eyes and Christmas tree emoji.
In the clip, Chopra’s eyes are glued to the screen as she sings along to “Santa Clause Is Coming to Town.”
Chopra seems mesmerized by the movie, covering her mouth and grabbing her husband’s arm at one point.

Winners of the 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards were revealed on Feb. 11 in ceremonies held simultaneously in Los Angeles and New York. As only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are eligible for consideration, these kudos, which are celebrating their 70th anniversary, have not been the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.
Indeed, one of this year’s leading contenders for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars — Martin McDonagh for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” — was ruled out of the running by the guild. However, that WGA race does include four of the other Academy Awards nominees — “The Big Sick,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird” and “The Shape of Water.” It is rounded out by “I, Tonya.” Jordan Peele won for “Get Out” edging out Greta Gerwig, who had been predicted to win for “Lady Bird.”

Nick Jones tries something completely different in his often hilarious, always hallucinatory new comedy, “Important Hats of the Twentieth Century,” which opened Monday at Mtc’s Studio at Stage II. Eschewing prison garb and lot more, the “Orange Is the New Black” writer-producer has written a camp classic for a nearly all-male cast. When “Hats” is revived in the future, there’ll be no roles for drag queens. No Charles Busch or Lypsinka taking over the leads. No takeoffs along the lines of a reverse-gender “Caged” or “The Women” or “The Bad Seed.” One of the dictums of camp is that heterosexuality is.

Scream Queens, Season 1, Episode 9, “Ghost Stories”
Written by Ryan Murphy
Directed by Michael Uppendahl
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
For at least one episode, temporary that it may be, Scream Queens found a solution to its problem of putting decent to great actors in situations that are either boring from a plot perspective or poorly executed by the dialogue or acting involved. As easy as it may seem with 20/20 vision, simply putting all of the characters who are the most over the top in either a villainous or purely campy way in scenes together cracks the code of how to make the show less of a slog between murders. There are still multiple spots in “Ghost Stories” where the momentum lags, mostly in scenes that involve two or more of the Chanels, but the return of Boone, some great Denise Hempfield moments, and some major clues in the...

Season 1, Episode 2, “Hell Week”
Written by Ryan Murphy & Brad Falchuk & Ian Brennan
Directed by Ryan Murphy (“Pilot”), Brad Falchuk (“Hell Week”)
Airs on Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
Given all of the momentum that Scream Queens had coming into the fall season, on the back of a marketing effort that began as far back as April, it’s a shame that in so many areas it falls completely short of its potential in the first two episodes. Many of Ryan Murphy’s shows suffer from being overstuffed with his usually creative ideas and this is no different. There are many pieces that entertain but as soon as one part of the ensemble clicks, whether it be the central sorority sisters or the many spokes that spin off the frenzied and threatened world of Kappa Kappa Tau, the focus shifts elsewhere and stalls any sort of momentary flow.

Artsy private club Soho House's plan for an expansion from West Hollywood into downtown L.A.'s burgeoning Arts District is already riling up the artists who work there. After founder Nick Jones told The Hollywood Reporter that the club will take over a warehouse in the increasingly gentrified area, the Los Angeles Downtown News reported that Soho House "has zeroed in on a 1917 brick building at 1000 S. Santa Fe Ave." Downtown Rehearsal, a complex of practice spaces for musicians, currently dominates the 62,000-square-foot warehouse, which is located just west of the L.A. River, within walking distance of a slew of new arrivals to the

This story first appeared in the April 10 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. For several years, insiders have wondered when the wildly oversubscribed Soho House West Hollywood finally would embark on an expansion. The answer, it turns out, is next year. Club founder Nick Jones tells THR he recently zeroed in on an 80,000-square-foot property in downtown L.A.’s Arts District. "It will be called Soho Warehouse," he says. The move comes on the heels of an aggressive global expansion financed by a $383 million investment from billionaire owner Ron Burkle, which has seen

Nick Jones has written a first-rate TV pilot with his new comedy, “Verite,” which opened Wednesday at Lincoln Center’s Claire Tow Theater in New York. Jones’s send-up of the book-publishing business isn’t what you’d expect from a writer and co-producer of “Orange Is the New Black.” It isn’t something you’d ever see on Netflix or FX or HBO. “Verite” is pure network TV. Being a play, it’s not a perfect TV pilot as written, but the changes needed are relatively minor. First, Jones should lose the play’s tidy resolution, which I won’t go into here.

In a funny-awkward meeting that takes place near the beginning Verité, a pair of Norwegian publishers tell Jo Darum, our heroine, that she has a captivating authorial voice but the wrong kind of material. This is half right; she’s actually a dreadful writer, as we know because we’ve already heard her reading to her 8-year-old son from the Ya fantasy novel she’s been working on since high school. (It’s about a “simple farm dwarf” out to save the world by, among other things, traversing the Fiery Lake of Boog.) Still, something about Dragonscape has impressed the Norwegians enough to scoop it off the slush pile and offer Jo an opportunity. They won’t publish it; they’re silly, not crazy. But if she will write a memoir that’s sufficiently dark and involves “interesting choices,” they’ll publish that instead.Publishing is almost too easy a target for satire,...

The coming year promises to bring further consolidation in the European TV biz as deep-pocketed telcos like Spain’s Telefonica entrench themselves further in content provision and quadplay services. There are potential acquisition plays from such giants as Vodafone and BT, while sports rights remain a key bone to be fought over, impacting the business in different ways. The new year also offers the prospect of some power plays from two of Europe’s heaviest hitters in Rupert Murdoch’s Sky Europe and French conglomerate Vivendi.
What Murdoch plans to do next, following the creation this year of Sky Europe — which merged his UK, Italian and German pay-tv operations — is likely to have a seismic impact on the European and international TV landscape. Rumors have been rife that Murdoch, who has stayed one step ahead of his competitors for the majority of his career, plans to divest his 39% stake in...

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Orange Is the New Black, Season 2, Episode 7: “Take a Break from Your Values”
Written by Nick Jones
Directed by Constantine Makris
Released Friday, June 6 on Netflix Instant
A storm is coming, literally and figuratively… and now we have riot gear.
The great thing about this episode is that it finally solidifies the impending war brewing all season, and features black vs. white’s first big blow that actually involves major violence. Taslitz taking matters into her own hands, and shanking the enemy, is a move in the right direction for a conflict that has been only based on words and flashbacks long enough. The fact that she’s old and misses her mark, of course, makes the move all the juicier, and gives Vee the upper hand going into the final two episodes, which is wonderful tension.

This felt mostly like a “the more you know” episode of Orange Is the New Black, which I think is my least favorite type. “The more you know” don’t call a black guard a “sister” if you are a black inmate. “The more you know” black people get 20% longer sentences than white inmates for the same crimes. “The more you know” hitting your girlfriend and stealing her money will bite you karmically in the butt. That last one, by the way, seems to be most of what Gloria’s back story amounts to, as she takes center stage, kind of, in a way, in this scattered installment.
