The full line-up of films for the 2014 Chinese Visual Festival (Cvf) has been announced, screening from May 7th – 18th at King’s College London, with events also held at Riverside Studios with DocHouse and the BFI. Tickets are now on sale via the festival website: chinesevisualfestival.org
The festival is thrilled to welcome two of the most important filmmakers in modern independent Chinese language cinema, Jia Zhangke and Pema Tseden. Acclaimed Chinese director and fast rising young talent Zheng Kuo follows up his challenging art and democracy documentary “The Cold Winter” with “Burned Wings”, a searing and highly enjoyable look at the low-down life of young gangsters in a small city in north-eastern China. Following Ming (Yang Shicong) and his three comrades in arms as they try to make names for themselves and work their way up the pecking order, Zheng combines bloody, hard-edged violence and marvellously deadpan humour as he depicts his wild protagonists coming up against other thugs and corrupt police. Ming (Yang Shicong) lays atop a patch of grass on a sea-side cliff, the word ‘yes’ in torso sized letters written across the front of his shirt. As he stands to face the sea dotted with distant fishing boats, his shirt ripples in the wind, waving the bold letters ‘n’ and ‘o’ printed across his back. Burned Wings (2013) begins on serenity, but don’t be fooled, for this genre bloodbath is anything but serene.
From this reflective moment by the water we cut abruptly to a barber shop where, poised to attack, Ming holds another man firm against a wall. The room is silent as other characters stand frozen within the scene, positioned and brilliantly colored by Sun Yang’s cinematography like a well-crafted painting.
