Exclusive: Metrograph Pictures announced on Wednesday that Good One — the first feature from writer-director India Donaldson, which premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival — will open in NY/LA on August 9 and expand nationwide in the following weeks.
That weekend, it will be up against Neon’s horror pic Cuckoo starring Hunter Schafer, Amazon MGM’s boxing drama The Fire Inside starring Brian Tyree Henry, Sony’s It Ends With Us, Lionsgate’s Borderlands, and M. Night Shyamalan’s Warner Bros thriller Trap.
The first title acquired by Metrograph since its recent expansion into theatrical releases under the leadership of former A24 exec David Laub, Good One watches as 17-year-old Sam (newcomer Lily Collias) embarks on a three-day backpacking trip in the Catskills with her dad, Chris (James Le Gros) and his oldest friend, Matt (Danny McCarthy). As the two men quickly settle into a gently quarrelsome brotherly dynamic,...

Metrograph Pictures has acquired North American rights to “Good One,” one of the breakouts of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. The indie film had its world premiere in the U.S. Narrative Competition section. It’s the feature debut of writer and director India Donaldson, and stars newcomer Lily Collias, whose performance captivated critics, alongside James Le Gros (“Showing Up”) and Danny McCarthy.
This marks the first title acquired by Metrograph Pictures, which recently expanded into releasing films theatrically under the leadership of David Laub, a former A24 executive who now heads distribution for the new studio growing out of Metrograph’s New York theater. The film will receive a national theatrical release in summer 2024.
“We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to release India Donaldson’s wonderful Sundance breakout as our first acquisition under David’s new leadership of Metrograph Pictures,” Christian Grass, CEO of Metrograph, said in a statement.

Early in writer-director India Donaldson’s Good One, during lunch at a diner, 17-year-old Sam (Lily Collias) takes an enormous bite of a burger. “I thought you were a vegetarian,” her father, Chris (James Le Gros), bemoans. She replies that she’s “never been one,” to which Matt (Danny McCarthy), Chris’s oldest friend, incredulously states, “You seem like one.”
The essence of Donaldson’s feature-length directorial debut, which traces this trio’s weekend backpacking trip in the Catskills, is distilled in that seemingly throwaway moment, as this is a film about two adults who spend much time presumptuously ascribing stereotypical behavior to the teens in their midst. Though Sam is on her way to college, about to face the onset of adulthood, her divorced parents barely notice the young woman developing before their eyes. Good One, then, in its glimpse of a generational divide, is less a tale of...

82 films have been selected to screen during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. In addition, eight episodic titles and a New Frontier interactive experience have made the cut and will be included in the upcoming festival.
17,435 projects were submitted for 2024 inclusion, setting a new festival record.
“From the first edition in 1985, Sundance Film Festival has aimed to provide a space to gather, celebrate, and engage with risk-taking artists that are committed to bringing their independent visions to audiences — the Festival remains true to that goal to this day,” stated Robert Redford, Sundance Institute Founder and President. “It continues to evolve, but its legacy of showcasing bold work that starts necessary conversations continues with the 2024 program.”
The 40th Sundance Film Festival will take place January 18 – 28, 2024, in Park City and Salt Lake City. Ticket packages and passes are currently on sale.

It’s almost time again for me to pack my bags and head to Park City, Utah, for the 2024 edition of the Sundance Film Festival. The last few years have been challenging for the fest, with the 2021 and 2022 editions only being online due to the pandemic. The 2023 edition was a hybrid version that sported a few high-profile debuts, including A24’s horror hit Talk to Me, but overall was a bit of a modest year in terms of stuff that broke out. However, 2024 seems to be a high-end year for the fest, with tons of big stars on the way to the festival, including Pedro Pascal, Kristen Stewart (there with two movies), Sebastian Stan, Woody Harrelson and many more.
It’s always interesting to note the trend in storytelling at this famous indie fest. In recent years, the pandemic weighed highly on the fest, with many films acknowledging the toll it took,...

India Donaldson picked up the Polish Film Institute Award for her upcoming feature “Good One” at the American Film Festival in Wrocław, coming with a $50,000 cash prize for post-production in Poland.
“It’s an affirmation of how we have been working and what we have been working towards,” Los Angeles-based Donaldson told Variety after the ceremony.
“Good One” – presented during Aff’s industry event U.S. in Progress and set to be finished in January 2024 – sees 17-year-old Sam heading on a weekend backpacking trip in the Catskills with her father and his oldest friend.
“It’s a very personal story, although I wouldn’t say it’s autobiographical,” said Donaldson, who wrote the film during the pandemic.
“I was living at home for the first time since I was a teenager. With my father, my stepmother and my two teenage half-siblings, who were at high-school at the time. For the most part,...

Not long ago, an award-winning Polish composer who’d scored dozens of films approached Ula Śniegowska about U.S. in Progress, an industry event conceived as a bridge between the Polish and American markets that runs parallel to the American Film Festival in Wrocław, Poland.
“He approached me saying, ‘I’ve done enough in the Polish market. I need an introduction to the international market. Can you, as U.S. in Progress, help me?’” Śniegowska recalls. “It seems we are a perfect matchmaker for those types of companies to have their work exposed in the U.S.”
Celebrating its 13th edition, U.S. in Progress was launched as a showcase for emerging independent American filmmakers. Each year, the event presents a curated selection of American indie titles in the final stages of production to European sales agents, distributors and festival programmers. This year’s edition takes place Nov. 8 – 10.

"Why are you still filming me?!" Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for an indie meta comedy called Going Nowhere, marking the debut of young filmmaker Izzy Shill. This premiered at a festival last year and will be out on VOD to watch later this month. Izzy stars as herself in a film about trying to make a film, and how crazy it can get when everything starts to fall apart while on the set. A camera team follows a group of wannabe filmmakers who travel to shoot an apocalypse feature set on a farm in Kentucky as they desperately eke out meaning in the time of Covid-19. This is a film within a film, a mockumentary about the making of eco thriller The Seed. Everyone, the actual producers, talent and camera department, who are making the film is also *in* the film playing themselves. The cast includes Diana Irvine,...

"He's probably still in love with you..." FilmRise has debuted a trailer for a charming romantic drama film titled The Boy Downstairs, from newcomer Sophie Brooks. The film played at the Tribeca and London Film Festivals, and will hit limited theaters starting February. Zosia Mamet (from "Girls", Wiener-Dog, Kate Can't Swim) stars as a woman who moves back to New York City and finds the perfect apartment to live in. However, she discovers her ex-boyfriend happens to be living in the apartment downstairs, and deals with her feelings for him while trying to figure out how to be successful in her own way. The cast includes Matthew Shear as the "boy", as well as Sarah Ramos, Deirdre O'Connell, and Diana Irvine. I saw this in London and it's charming, very quirky, but not that memorable or original in its story, but still good. Here's the first official trailer for Sophie Brooks' The Boy Downstairs,...

One of the more high-class problems is struggling to break free of an iconic role that made you a star in the first place. Such is the challenge facing Zosia Mamet, whom most people know only as the high-strung Shoshanna on HBO’s “Girls.” If Shoshanna was the Miranda of her day (as many have said when comparing “Girls” to its predecessor, “Sex and the City”), Mamet has the best chance of the “Girls” crew to have a lasting career. Tony winner Cynthia Nixon, who played Miranda, lands plum film roles such as Emily Dickinson in Terence Davies’ “A Quiet Passion,” and is currently starring on Broadway opposite Laura Linney in the revival of Lillian Hellman’s “Little Foxes.” However, if Mamet aspires to such heights, she must choose better projects than “The Boy Downstairs.”

“Tracking Shot” is a top of month featurette here on Ioncinema.com that looks at the projects that are moments away from lensing. This November, we’ve got a fivesome of projects that we feel are worth signaling out, but before we put the focus on those, the previous month was a rather fruitful one for mostly indiewood film productions. Films that we’ll be seeing in 2016 and which are for the most part still filming include: Mark Williams‘ workplace drama The Headhunter’s Calling (with Alison Brie, Gretchen Mol, Gerard Butler, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina), Philippe Falardeau‘s bio boxing drama The Bleeder (with Liev Schreiber, Naomi Watts, Elisabeth Moss), Taron Lexton’s coming-of-ager In Search of Fellini (with Ksenia Solo, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Maria Bello), Kevin Tent‘s Black List scripted rom-com (with Domhnall Gleeson, Christina Applegate, Thomas Haden Church, Nina Dobrev), Sophie Brooks‘ NYC set Euro-fizzled comedy,...
