With their new horror thriller Guess Who, Tubi may finally have come up with a fairly original idea for one of their films. As far as I can tell, it’s the first film to use mummering as a major plot point. No, not mummies, mummering. What is mummering? Mummering is a Christmas-time house-visiting tradition practised in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ireland, and the City of Philadelphia. It adds a touch of Halloween to the season as people would dress in disguise and go door to door. If they were invited in, they’d give some kind of performance while their hosts tried to guess who they were.
Michael and Kaitlyn, his fiancée, are driving out to meet his family when they have to stop for gas.

In the end, was Spotify’s acquisition of Gimlet and Parcast all a waste?
That’s how unionized staffers at Gimlet and Parcast described Spotify’s decision on Monday to begin shuttering the two podcast studios that the audio giant had purchased in 2019 for 221 million euros. “When Spotify purchased Gimlet and Parcast for nearly $300 million, they acquired an incredible group of talented people with specific and marketable skills. Then, they wasted that opportunity: canceling shows with dedicated audiences, leaving half-finished projects to die on the vine, and giving teams little direction as to what they actually wanted to see produced,” the Gimlet and Parcast unions said. “Gimlet and Parcast were studios with vision that helped shape our industry. Whether Spotify Studios has a vision remains to be seen.”
Four years after their acquisitions, Gimlet and Parcast will sunset this summer as they combine to make Spotify Studios, an in-house studio division led by Julie McNamara.

Martin Scorsese is boarding a documentary about some of his favorite filmmakers, with plans to both narrate and executive produce a movie about the lives of the British duo Powell & Pressburger.
Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, under their production company The Archers, directed some of the finest films of Britain’s golden age of cinema – and often in ravishing color – such as “The Red Shoes,” “Black Narcissus,” “A Matter of Life Or Death” (also known as “Stairway to Heaven”) and “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.”
Scorsese has often cited their influence, and has referred to their movies as “grand, poetic, wise, adventurous, headstrong, enraptured by beauty, deeply romantic, and completely uncompromising.”
David Hinton, a BAFTA and Emmy winner, will direct the untitled feature, which will be something of a personal journey for Scorsese as he reflects on how he was captivated by their films at a young age,...

Talk about legends colliding.
Martin Scorsese is set to narrate and executive produce a feature documentary about the hugely influential British filmmaking duo of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.
Directed by two-time BAFTA and Emmy-winning helmer David Hinton, the doc is billed as “Scorsese’s personal and moving look at two of British cinema’s greatest filmmakers.” London-based sales agent Altitude is handling international sales and will release the film in the U.K. and Ireland.
Powell and Pressburger — who together ran production company The Archers — worked together over the course of 18 years and are highly regarded for their innovative use of editing, special effects and color, which at the time was very forward-looking. They made some of the great classics of the British golden age, including “The Red Shoes” (1948), “Black Narcissus” (1947), “A Matter of Life and Death” (1946) and “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp” (1943). The gripping Sundance documentary Misha and the Wolves, premiering at the festival today, possesses a fairy tale-like quality, beginning with its title. Those four words evoke ancient stories of children deep in the woods, threatened by menacing animals, as in Little Red Riding Hood.
The similarities go further. The documentary tells the story of Misha Defonseca, a woman living inMassachusetts who purported to be a Holocaust survivor. She told neighbors a remarkable tale of growing up a young Jewish girl in Belgium during the war, saying she was secreted with a Catholic family after her parents were deported. She said her foster parents hated her.
Desperate to reunite with her mother and father, she told of setting out on foot for Germany, with little more than a compass and a knife, keeping to the woods. On her way she encountered a female wolf,...

Update: Much of the Venice Film Festival’s 2019 competition field, which was announced this morning in Rome, lines up as expected with Warner Bros/DC origns story Joker; Fox/Disney’s Brad Pitt space drama Ad Astra; Steven Soderbergh’s starry Netflix dark comedy, The Laundromat; and Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story from Netflix making the cut to begin potential awards-season runs.

Family can lift you up, or they can drag you down.
In the case of Jimmy Downey, his family filled with abuse and crime threatened to pull him under so far he escaped leaving them far behind.
But when Jimmy's beloved mother, Rose, dies, Jimmy heads back to his hometown to face a lifetime of disillusion and disappointment that he was never able to escape no matter how much distance he set.
Michael Rowe, best known by TV Fanatics as Floyd Lawton/Deadshot on Arrow, stars as Jimmy, a police officer brimming with loneliness and unreleased anger.
His escape from St. John's, Newfoundland, to Toronto didn't heal his wounds after watching his father brutalize his mother for years, nor did it ease his pain at walking away and leaving his family to their own devices even if Jimmy was trying to be a better man.

Another awards announcement, another morning where women have been completely shut out of the Best Director race. The BAFTA Awards are facing backlash for nominating only male filmmakers for the fifth year in a row. The last woman to be nominated for the BAFTA Best Director prize was Kathryn Bigelow for “Zero Dark Thirty” back in 2013. This year’s BAFTA nominees are Denis Villeneuve (“Blade Runner 2049”), Luca Guadagnino (“Call Me by Your Name”), Christopher Nolan (“Dunkirk”), Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water”), and Martin McDonagh (“Three Billboards”).
