Now that nearly two years have passed since W.N.B.A. star Brittney Griner served a nine-month sentence for cannabis possession at a Russian penal colony, she has begun speaking out about the suffering she experienced while behind bars. In a New York Times interview, Griner said she felt dehumanized when a guard fastened a chain to her handcuffs, treating her like a dog, and how, in another instance, doctors forced her to undress so they could photograph her nude. In her darkest moments, she contemplated death by suicide.

Some people have had enough of the constant attention focused on singer Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce’s relationship.
On a recent episode of Good Morning America, Robin Roberts expressed her feelings about all the publicity and talk surrounding the couple.
A segment featured a story about the star couple’s ongoing relationship, which has extended from the NFL regular season to the upcoming Super Bowl.
Since the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the San Francisco 49ers, Swift could attend the game to support her man and his team in their quest to add another win to their collection.
During GMA’s story from Will Reeve, Kelce was shown as he gave his thoughts about himself and Swift supporting one another and dealing with what their relationship has brought.
Following the piece’s presentation, Roberts seemed riled up about the topic as she spoke to her colleagues.

Robin Roberts was absent from Good Morning America for several days while away to promote another project she is heavily involved with.
The longtime GMA anchor appeared on several episodes of ABC’s morning program last week but was not at the desk with George Stephanopolous on Friday.
She also missed Tuesday’s episode, the latter of which featured the return of co-anchor Michael Strahan to the show.
Ahead of that, Monsters and Critics reported that Roberts took a trip with her wife and her “Glam Fam” crew.
The group went to the annual Sundance Film Festival held in Park City, Utah, until the end of the month.
A big part of Roberts’ reason for being there was revealed as she spoke about her upcoming television work, which has her in a different role than usual.

Sports and music representation powerhouse Wasserman has finalized its acquisition of Brillstein Entertainment Partners, the venerable Hollywood management and production company. Terms were not disclosed. Deadline exclusively revealed the acquisition talks back in February.
Wasserman chairman and CEO Casey Wasserman and Brillstein co-CEOs Cynthia Pett and Jon Liebman made the announcement. It puts Wasserman, grandson of the iconic Hollywood representative and studio chief Lew Wasserman, directly into the film and TV representation and production game for the first time. It is the second strategic alignment for Wasserman, who took over the lucrative music touring business that was once the most profitable part of the Paradigm agency, at a time when the pandemic grounded live touring revenues.
It would be the latest move in management after 3Arts made a deal with Lionsgate, and Range Media Partners linked with Automatik.
Wasserman, Pett and Liebman believe their cultures will mesh in their compatible business and staffs.

Steph Curry went absolutely berserk on Saturday afternoon, and for good reason too, after burying his second-ever hole-in-one. The NBA star teed off at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe, Nevada and, for the first time in tournament history at the 152-yard 7th hole, bounced his shot into the hole.
After realizing the improbable feat, Curry took off his hat, flung it in the air and sprinted down the course with his hands raised in the air. Still running and his caddy and partner trailing far behind him, Curry then took the glove off of his left hand, flung it in the air and jumped with joy before finally reaching the 7th hole’s flagpole.
Curry, out of breath after the long run, later told NBC Sports that it was his second-ever ace on a golf course.

For decades, women’s sports were a mere afterthought in the sports broadcasting world. Women’s sports could never attract the same audience as men, so why should broadcasters spend time and money showing and analyzing sports events that no one wanted to watch?
New data from Nielsen is demonstrating just how faulty an argument this is. The data shows that interest in women’s sports is growing at a staggering rate; this year’s Women’s March Madness final between Iowa and Lsu drew nearly 10 million viewers, a 103% increase over the 2022 final. But what can this growing fascination with women’s sports be attributed to?
Giving people access to women’s sports on TV is a good start. The BBC only showed eight matches of the 2017 UEFA Women’s Euro on main broadcast channels. They bumped that number to 26 in 2022 and saw a huge increase in the number of viewers,...

At Dallas Fort Worth International Airport last week, Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner was challenged by a “provocateur” Alex Stein, a right-wing YouTuber who is known for impeding local government meetings and questioning liberal politicians.
Stein posted a 93-second video in which he interrogated Griner on whether she “disliked America” to her exchange for Russian prisoner, Viktor Bout, known as “Merchant of Death.”
Griner was freed in December after being confined in Russia for nearly 10 months on drug charges when she was returning to Russia. Russian Customs authorities found vape containers infused with cannabis oil in her suitcase. She then later said in court that she had forgotten that she had packed it.

A US citizen who played in several punk rock bands while living in Russia was arrested in Moscow on suspicion of drug trafficking.
According to NPR, the Khamovniki District Court of Moscow has accused Travis Michael Leake of selling the drug mephedrone. If found guilty, he faces up to 20 years in prison.
A former paratrooper in the US military, Leake has lived in Moscow for nearly a decade. While residing in Russia, he played in several punk bands, including as the lead vocalist in Lovi Noch. Additionally, he served as the president of Red Decades Records, which looks to identify and cultivate “new and existing talent in the Russian marketplace for wider distribution in a world market.”
Leake was also featured in a 2014 episode of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown, where he voiced his frustrations with censorship in Russia. “This was a documentary series about musicians standing up and risking their lives in some cases,...

Brittney Griner was targeted in a “calculated confrontation” by a “social media figure and provocateur” Saturday as her WNBA team the Phoenix Mercury traveled through the Dallas Airport. The WNBA released a statement Saturday acknowledging the “incident” without providing any details about what occurred.

WNBA star Brittney Griner stood for the national anthem Friday before her team’s game against the Los Angeles Sparks.
The action marked the first time in years Griner has stood for the anthem. It followed her rescue by the US government in a prisoner exchange after she was convicted by a Russian court of drug possession, sentenced to ten years of hard labor, and incarcerated in that country.
“You have the right to protest, the right to able to speak out, question, challenge and do all these things,” Griner said after the game. “What I went through and everything, it just means a little bit more to me now. So I want to be able to stand. I was literally in a cage and could not stand the way I wanted to.

For the first time in 579 days, Brittney Griner took the floor for the Phoenix Mercury on Friday night. The veteran centre missed the entire 2022 season while she was detained in Russia on drug charges and did not return home until December. She made it clear immediately that she wanted to play this season, though, and worked tirelessly over the past five months to be ready for opening night.
Unfortunately for Griner and the Mercury, the result didn’t go their way. Even though they fell to the Los Angeles Sparks, 94-71, seeing Griner back on the floor and doing what she loves meant more than the result. She finished with 18 points, six rebounds and four blocks.
The festivities started pre-game when Vice President Kamala Harris visited the Mercury locker room. Harris and the U.S. State Department were instrumental in bringing Griner home from Russia.

Brittney Griner returned to the WNBA court for the first time since her nearly 10-month detainment in Russia for the Phoenix Mercury’s preseason finale at home Friday night.
Griner played 17 minutes and scored 10 points in her first WNBA action since the 2021 WNBA Finals — a span of 572 days — and while Friday’s matchup was essentially just warmup game, the gravity of the situation wasn’t lost on Griner.
“I didn’t think I would be sitting right here,” Griner told reporters postgame (via ESPN). “I didn’t think I would be playing basketball this quickly.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend looked so glamorous on the red carpet at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday night that no one would guess Teigen spent the previous week recouping from a cruise-related illness. The cookbook author chronicled her week-long recovery on social media after she and Legend took their three children - Luna, Miles, and baby Esti - on a Disney cruise.
On April 21, Teigen tweeted about just how gross she was feeling. Comedian Roy Wood Jr. did something many guests at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner forget to do: celebrate journalism.
In a series of funny remarks that took on everything from Don Lemon to Fox News Channel’s massive $787.5 million settlement to Dominion Voting to President Biden’s age, Wood devoted significant time to calling for support for local journalism, noting that reporters working for regional and local media outlets are often the first to spot malfeasance or something wrong. He also mentioned his father’s work in local radio and his mother’s career in education.
The comments added a personal touch to the proceedings, which are organized each year by the White House Correspondents Association and meant to call attention to the mission of holding government officials accountable in reporting meant to be consumed by the American public.

Brittney Griner and wife Cherelle made a surprise appearance at the 2023 NAACP Image Awards on Feb. 25. The whole crowd erupted into applause and rose to their feet as host Queen Latifah introduced the couple at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, saying, "In the spirit of overcoming adversity, I want to take this moment to recognize someone who has done just that. Back home, back here with us tonight, where she belongs." After taking the stage hand in hand while smiling from ear to ear, both Brittney and Cherelle addressed the audience and made a plea to fight for American detainees overseas.
"We are truly so thankful to all the people, many of whom are Black women and Black-led organizations, who fought so hard to bring Bg home tonight," Cherelle said. Brittney added, "It feels so good to be here, especially with my beautiful, amazing wife and with all of y'all here today.
