This year’s contenders for best adapted screenplay are quite the eclectic group based on their sources — something that can never be said for those competing for best original screenplay. When looking at this category’s past since the year 2000, can history dictate which type of adapted screenplays the Academy might be leaning toward at the 2017 Oscars?
This site’s namesake, The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, honed in on nine films considered either frontrunners (the first five) or major threats (the last four) in his latest check-in on the Oscar race: Moonlight, Lion, Fences, Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Nocturnal Animals, Sully, Silence, and Loving. The original sources for these films are as varied as the subject matter in the works they inspired, so let’s break them down.

The story didn’t end with the Miracle in the Hudson – hero pilot Sully Sullenberger is tried by an investigative committee. Clint Eastwood’s film examines and re-examines the 2.5 minutes, as the bureaucrats make the case that 155 passengers were unnecessarily put at risk.

'Sully' movie with Tom Hanks as pilot Chesley Sullenberger: Clint Eastwood homage to 'the durable, honorable American male.' 'Sully' movie review: 'Taut, straightforward' drama features Clint Eastwood's latest all-American hero When considering Sully, Clint Eastwood's taut, straightforward account of heroism on trial, it helps to remember that the title character's name works as both noun and verb. And one can see how Eastwood was drawn to both meanings. The noun, of course, is the nickname of airline pilot Chesley Sullenberger, who saved the lives of 155 passengers and crew on January 15, 2009, by pulling off a daring water landing after a flock of birds took out both engines of his Us Airways flight minutes after it took off from New York's Laguardia airport. The Sully depicted here is, like many Eastwood heroes, made of uniquely American clay; a sturdy, rigorous material that the director,...

After coming off what is far and away the biggest success of his career at the box-office, American Sniper, director Clint Eastwood is taking on another biopic of sorts with Sully. Ahead of a release in a few weeks, an IMAX trailer has now landed.

From one remarkable true-life tale to another, American Sniper helmer and all-round film legend Clint Eastwood will be back behind the lens later this year for Sully, a cinematic white-knuckle ride that recounts the Miracle of the Hudson.
Placing Tom Hanks in the shoes of Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, Eastwood’s biopic chronicles the doomed journey of Us Airways Flight 1549, which was forced into an emergency water landing seven years ago after losing power to all engines.
Lifting inspiration from Sullenberger’s own memoir Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters – one he penned along with Jeffrey Zaslow – Sully focuses on the pilot’s personal life and trauma just as much as the miracle itself, as air safety investigators begin to pour over each and every detail of the emergency landing, with some even going so far as to call the pilot’s actions into question.

Patton Oswalt has joined the cast of James Ponsoldt's adaptation of Dave Eggers' best-selling novel "The Circle".
Emma Watson plays a college graduate who goes to work at the Circle, an Internet monopoly that links users’ personal emails, social media, banking and purchasing with their universal operating system.
The result is one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency - which turns out not to always be a good thing. Oswalt plays one of the three founders of the online conglomerate of the title, the other two played by Tom Hanks and John Boyega. Karen Gillan also stars.
Speaking of Tom Hanks projects, Jerry Ferrara ("Entourage") has scored a key role in the Hanks-led, Clint Eastwood-directed"Sully". Details about his role remain unknown, though Laura Linney and Aaron Eckhart also star.

The world was stunned when Captain Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger landed a damaged Airbus A320 on the Hudson River in New York City on January 15th 2009. The pilot became an instant icon, and the incident immediately passed into legend. Now, Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood is set to bring the story to the big screen for Warner Bros, and fellow Academy Award winner Tom Hanks is apparently in talks to take the lead role. The only surprising thing about this is the fact that it’s taken so long to get to it.
Captain Sullenberger learned to fly at the age of 16, later becoming a fighter pilot in the Us Air Force. He quickly progressed to the rank of Captain, and also served on an accident investigation board. Tom Hanks is in talks to be the captain now, Deadline reports. Just this time it'll be in the sky, for Clint Eastwood's Warner Bros. movie about Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the American hero and former aviator best known for the "Miracle on the Hudson." The screenplay, by Todd Komarnicki, is based on Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow's book Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters, which will reportedly dive into the pilot's heroic landing, as well as the behind-the-scenes trouble that jeopardized his reputation. Eastwood will direct, but no word yet on whether babies featured in the biopic will be real or fake.

When it was announced earlier this month that Clint Eastwood was going to make a movie about Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and the "Miracle on the Hudson," our ears perked up - as happens when a high profile director signs on to a high profile film. Now the project has gotten infinitely more impressive, however, as Tom Hanks is now in talks to play the lead role in the movie. Deadline has the scoop on the story, saying that negotiations are still on-going to have Hanks sign on to the movie - which doesn't appear to have a title at this time. The movie is being based on the book "Highest Duty: My Search For What Really Matters," that was written by Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow, and Todd Komarnicki (Perfect Stranger) has been tapped by Warner Bros. to write the script. For those that don't remember, Captain Sullenberger is famous...

Even though Clint Eastwood has been around Hollywood for decades, the legendary actor/director is just coming off his biggest film to date. 2014's American Sniper, a biopic about Navy Seal Chris Kyle, earned $543 million worldwide (more money than any other Eastwood film and largest domestic release of 2014) and garnered a Best Picture nomination. Frank Marshall, Allyn Stewart, Tim Moore and Eastwood will produce. Todd Komarnicki will adapt Sullenberger's memoir "Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters", which the pilot co-wrote with Jeffrey Zaslow. After American Sniper became a stunning box office success for Warner Bros. early this year, the studio has set its director Clint Eastwood for another biopic. The prolific filmmaker will helm an untitled film that tells the true story of Captain Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger, the American pilot who heroically landed a filled plane in the Hudson River after it malfunctioned mid-flight.
Sullenberger became a national hero back in 2009 when he pulled off a tricky emergency landing in the Hudson River off Manhattan when his aircraft, climbing out of Laguardia Airport, struck a flock of Canadian geese, disabling both engines. All passengers and crew members survived the landing.
Producer Frank Marshall acquired the rights to Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow’s book back in 2010 and has been developing the project ever since. Allyn Stewart is also attached to produce.

Fresh off his take on the life of Chris Kyle in "American Sniper," director Clint Eastwood will tackle another high-profile American.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that Eastwood will follow up his Oscar-nominated film with a biopic centered around Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger. In January 2009, Sullenberger piloted U.S. Airways Flight 1549, which experienced engine failure shortly after takeoff from New York City's Laguardia Aiport. Sullenberger was able to land the plane safely in the waters of the Hudson River, and his quick thinking -- and avoidance of any injury to plane's 155 passengers -- landed him international fame and the admiration.
Sullenberger parlayed that limelight into a book deal, and in 2010 released "Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters," which he co-authored with the late Jeffrey Zaslow. "Highest Duty" serves as the inspiration for Eastwood's as-yet-untitled biopic, with screenwriter Todd Komarnicki penning the script.
