Disney’s “Space Mountain” has been reignited.
Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, whose credits including “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” and the two Michael Bay-produced live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” films, have been hired to write a new screenplay based on the beloved Disney Parks attraction, TheWrap has learned.
Jonathan Eirich from Rideback is producing the feature, along with Joby Harold (who wrote an earlier iteration of the project) and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse. Ryan Halprin of Rideback is executive producing.
The original Space Mountain opened as the centerpiece of the Magic Kingdom’s version of Tomorrowland in 1975, part of the expansive Walt Disney World resort outside of Orlando, Fla. The ride is known for its strikingly graphic design — comprised of a cone and spires that jut heavenward (and can be seen as part of John Hench’s early concept art) — and its thrilling, coaster-in-the-dark aesthetic. Disney is once again trying to make a "Space Mountain" movie happen. This is one of the company's most cherished theme park rides as a staple of both Disneyland and Disney World for decades. Now, a pair of new writers have been brought on board to try and crack the code with this long-gestating adaptation. Whether or not they will be the ones to get it across the finish line is another question entirely.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec have been tapped to write the latest iteration of "Space Mountain" for Disney. Plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being. Applebaum and Nemec are known for their work on Amazon's wildly expensive series "Citadel," as well as Netflix's live-action "Cowboy Bebop" series, which was canceled after just one season. Jonathan Eirich is on board to produce the film alongside Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell,...

Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec (Citadel) have been tapped to script a live-action Space Mountain movie for Disney, Deadline can confirm.
While details as to the plot of the film are under wraps, it’s based on the theme park attraction first introduced to Disneyland on January 15, 1975. Jonathan Eirich will produce for Rideback, alongside Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse, with Rideback’s Ryan Halprin is exec producing. Harold also completed a previous draft of the script.
One of Disney’s most iconic and beloved attractions, Space Mountain marked a significant milestone as the world’s first indoor, fully enclosed roller coaster. Designed by Imagineer John Hench and built by Wed Enterprises, now known as Walt Disney Imagineering, its concept originated in the 1960s during the space race era, with Walt Disney himself expressing interest in creating a space-themed attraction. Eddie Murphy is going pink.
The actor is in negotiations to star in Pink Panther, the MGM comedy based on the classic property. He would star as Inspector Clouseau.
Sonic the Hedgehog filmmaker Jeff Fowler is directing from a script by Chris Bremner, with Rideback’s Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich (Aladdin) producing via their Rideback banner. Larry Mirisch and Julie Andrews are also producing.
The Pink Panther films told the adventures of bumbling Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers), with the first film involving a jewel called the Pink Panther. A cartoon panther appeared in the opening credits, and became popular in his own right, starring in cartoons over the decades.
According to sources, the new feature project would be a live-action/CG hybrid and would combine both traditions. The premise takes a buddy cop movie tone to the proceedings with the Inspector and Panther teaming up for the first time ever on the big-screen.

Never thought you would read these two titles in the same headline, did you? Well, that obviously changes now, because Disney+'s remake of "Lilo & Stitch" has found its first (human) actor in "The Hangover" star Zach Galifianakis.
The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed that Galifianakis has signed on for an undisclosed leading role. If you think it's weird that his was the first name to be announced, no need to worry, because the trade says that Disney is currently conducting "a wide search" for the perfect actresses to bring Lilo and her sister Nani to life. Disney has not commented on the casting, so we don't know if Galifianakis will be providing the voice for Stitch, or maybe an alien like Jumba Jookiba or Pleakley. Maybe he's playing an entirely new character.

The “Lilo & Stich” live-action remake is assembling its Ohana. Zach Galifankis has been cast in the upcoming Disney+ film, IndieWire has confirmed.
Details of Galifanakis’ character is being kept under wraps, so it’s unclear if the “Hangover” star will be playing a live-action character, or if he’s voicing a CGI character such as the lovable Stitch himself. Because the original animated film centered primarily on Native Hawaiian characters, Galifanakis will likely be playing either a new character for the film or one of the aliens in the cast, like Stitch, antagonist Captain Gantu, or a member of the iconic odd couple Jumba and Pleakly.
The beloved original animated film focuses on Lilo, a young girl struggling after the death of their parents. When she encounters Stitch, a bizarre dog-like creature created by an alien scientist to be the ultimate destructive force, Lilo adopts the stray and brings it...

Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” movie is beginning to shape up with the casting of Zach Galifianakis.
Galifianakis takes on an undisclosed role in the new movie, which is planned for release on Disney+. Zach Galifianakis has closed a deal to star in Lilo & Stitch, Disney’s live-action remake of its cult 2002 animated movie.
Dean Fleischer Camp, the filmmaker behind indie darling and best animated Oscar nominee Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, is directing the feature that is intended to be a major release on Disney+.
The Hawaii-centric story told of the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who was genetically engineered to be a force of destruction. With nosy social workers and pursuing aliens banging on the door, the two bonded over a shared sense of family and win the day.
Details of Galifianakis’ role are being kept in the dog pound.
The studio is conducting a wide search for the actors to play Lilo and her older sister. Stitch, naturally, will be a CG confection.
Chris Kekaniokalani Bright wrote the script for the adaptation.

“Marcel The Shell With Shoes On” director Dean Fleischer Camp has been selected to head up Disney’s live-action adaptation of its beloved 2002 family film “Lilo & Stitch.”
Camp will make his full live-action directorial debut (“Marcel” mixed elements of stop-motion animation and live-action) with the feature. This will also mark his first major studio film following A24’s “Marcel,” based on the viral video series starring co-writer Jenny Slate as an anthropomorphic shell. The film is already a hit at the specialty box office and expected to perform well when it expands to more theaters July 15.
“Lilo & Stitch” revolves around a lonely Hawaiian girl named Lilo who adopts Stitch, a “dog” that turns out to be a lovable but highly destructive extraterrestrial creature.

Chu was attached to the project in 2020, but his deal was never finalized.

Following the massive success of last summer’s reboot, Disney is developing a follow-up to the film with writers John Gatins and Andrea Berloff.
Sources say the movie is in early development, but after spending the last six months figuring out what direction to take the next film, producers look to have found their path.
Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced the original, are back producing through their Rideback banner, with Ryan Halprin executive producing.
It’s unknown at this time whether director Guy Ritchie will return. Producers hope to bring back stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott, but offers won’t be extended to the cast until a script is ready.
The film will be a theatrical release, not a Disney Plus title. The original animated movie had two straight-to-video sequels, but sources say this new...

Along with directing, Zemeckis will also produce “Ares” with his ImageMovers partners Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey. Rideback’s Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are also producing. Disney is developing a spinoff of its live-action “Aladdin” with Billy Magnussen reprising his Prince Anders character.
The unnamed project is in early development for the studio’s recently launched Disney Plus streaming service. Disney has hired Jordan Dunn and Michael Kvamme to write a script centered on the haughty Prince Anders, one of Princess Jasmine’s suitors.
Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, producers of “Aladdin,” are producing the spinoff through their Rideback company. Rideback’s Ryan Halprin will executive produce.
“Aladdin” became the 41st title to cross the $1 billion worldwide box office mark in July. It opened with $117 million over the Memorial Day holiday and easily outperformed Disney’s pre-opening domestic projections along with underlining the validity of the studio’s strategy of rebooting its animated classics such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Jungle Book.”
In this case, it remade the original 1992 animated movie with Mena Massoud as Aladdin,...

Make way for Prince…Anders? A spinoff film based on Disney’s live-action remake of “Aladdin” is headed to Disney+, and Billy Magnussen, who played Prince Anders in the remake, will star in the project, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Magnussen was one of the smarmy, wealthy princes who visits Agrabah to try and win Princess Jasmine’s (Naomi Scott) heart, and though his role was small, the rising star proved to be a scene-stealer in the film.
Jordan Dunn and Michael Kvamme are attached to write the script for the untitled film that’s considered in early development at Disney+. Magnussen would reprise his role in the film, though the movie is not intended to be a sequel to “Aladdin.”
