It would be reductive to say podcasts are having a moment right now. The industry, which is expected to generate 4 billion in revenue by 2024, can trace its roots back to the days of radio, when creators were making podcasts long before Ben Hammersley coined the name. But the format’s impact and moneymaking potential have arguably never been higher, as evidenced by the entry of new megawatt voices like Meghan Markle, whose Archetypes dominated the charts shortly after launch. For this year’s inaugural Podcast Power Players list, THR examined the medium’s current landscape, taking reach and influence into account to determine the leading dealmakers and front-facing creatives pushing the industry forward. — J. After being online the past two years because of Covid, SXSW’s film festival returns with a vibrant in-person edition for its 29th edition, which will run March 11-20, 2022. Amid the mounting pressure on Spotify over allegations of Covid misinformation presented on its Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the show’s host made an apology of sorts — “if I pissed you off, I’m sorry” — and garnered support from Dwayne Johnson, Kevin James, Jewel, Jamie Kennedy, Tulsi Gabbard, Troy Aikman, Kat Von D, Domanic Monaghan, Candice Owens, Jillian Michaels, Tomi Lahren and Andrew Dice Clay.
All of those boldfaced names responded in the comments section of the Instagram video that Rogan posted Monday in which he said he just likes to have “interesting conversations with people that have differing opinions,” but admitted he doesn’t “always get it right” and promised to “do better.”
He did so in response to criticism from Neil Young and Joni Mitchell aover what they called “fake information about vaccines” presented on his show. Rogan did not go so far as to characterize views expressed on his show as “fake.

There’s just something about funny guys playing villains.
In fact, there’s an argument to be made that what elevated Walter White, the protagonist of “Breaking Bad,” to the level of legendary antihero was the comedic sensibilities of Bryan Cranston. The series, generally considered one of the best TV dramas of all time, thrived because Cranston’s innately genial constitution added instant depth to a character that could have been one note. The actor, who to that point was best known for nabbing three Emmy nominations for his role as the clueless dad in “Malcolm in the Middle,” knew his way around a joke and was able to blend the pathos inherent to so much comedy with the menace of a criminal mastermind, making White a character for the ages.

To cap off a particularly hellacious year, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle gifted us the first episode of their Archewell Audio podcast on Dec. 29. Throughout the episode, which was a 2020 holiday special, we heard from the likes of Stacey Abrams, Christina Adane, José Andrés, Brené Brown, Rachel Cargle, Deepak Chopra, James Corden, Matt Haig, Elton John, Hussain Manawer, Naomi Osaka, Tyler Perry, and George the Poet. While the episode's quotes about 2020 were at times both uplifting and reflective, the true highlight came at the end when Harry and Meghan shared a sweet moment with their 1-year-old son, Archie. "Archie, is it fun?" Meghan asked before Harry had him repeat "Happy New Year" with a giggle. Listening to the three of them laughing, along with Archie's slightly English accent, is a sound we'll keep coming back to when we need a pick-me-up.

Two years ago, Lindsay Ell released The Continuum Project, a song-for-song remake of John Mayer’s 2006 album The Continuum. It was an ambitious release that initially sprouted out of a studio and songwriting exercise before widening in scope, but it pales in comparison to the lofty concept underpinning the Canadian singer-songwriter-guitarist’s new release, Heart Theory. The 12-track album, on which Ell co-wrote 11 of the songs, was produced by Dann Huff and goes headlong into self-care as it tracks the seven stages of grief — a psychological framework first developed by psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross.

Black Women Activists and Stars to Run White Stars’ Instragram Accounts for #ShareTheMicNow Campaign
All day Wednesday, dozens of prominent Black women in Hollywood, fashion, business, literature and political activism will be taking over the Instagram accounts of white women including Julia Roberts and Elizabeth Warren, as part of the #ShareTheMicNow campaign, which aims to amplify the voices and stories of Black women.
Created by Bozoma Saint John, Cmo at Endeavor, fashion designer Stacey Bende, and bestselling writers Luvvie Ajayi Jones and Glennon Doyle, the campaign will see 46 Black women run the accounts of 46 white women. “When the world listens to women, it listens to white women. For far too long, Black women’s voices have gone unheard, even though they’ve been using their voices loudly for centuries to enact change,” #ShareTheMicNow said in a press release. “Today, more than ever, it is Necessary that we create a unifying action to center Black women’s lives, stories, and calls to action. We need to listen to Black women.

Seasoned Wme agent Jennifer Rudolph Walsh is shifting to a new role at the agency. She will focus on live events and continue developing Together Live, a separate business she founded and co-owns with the agency.
Walsh, who rose through the lit department and has branched out into representing speakers and conferences in nearly two decades at the company, opted to step away from day-to-day agenting. In recent years, after a strong run leading William Morris and then William Morris Endeavor to the top lit ranks, she handled tours for notable talent like Oprah Winfrey and Arianna Huffington.
The move follows last Friday’s 11th-hour abandonment by Endeavor of its long-nurtured plan to stage an initial public offering. While the company, which owns Wme and a range of other businesses, still hopes to find a favorable time in 2020 to hit the public markets, the Ipo climate had worsened considerably in recent months.

Netflix taught fans the magic of tidying up physical clutter in their lives through Marie Kondo's hit show, and now it's time to Spring clean the soul with the help of Brené Brown. The University of Houston research professor and renowned social scientist is bringing her wisdom to the streaming service in the form of a new special, Brené Brown: The Call to Courage, premiering April 19.
