Having read the first issue of Giant Robot Hellboy, I can confidently say that Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo have, once again, created something truly special and I'm so excited for Daily Dead readers to check it out for themselves when it's released by Dark Horse Comics on October 25th. However, you don't have to wait until next week, as we have preview pages and details from Duncan Fegredo on the creative process in our Q&a:
You and Mike Mignola have worked together on some of Hellboy's best stories. How did your collaboration on Giant Robot Hellboy come about?
Duncan Fegredo: Giant Robot Hellboy was one of those ideas Mike has had prowling around his mind since he drew that fateful sketch during the pandemic. You remember all those amazing sketches I’m sure, they were collected as The Quarantine Sketchbook. I loved that Giant Robot Hellboy sketch from the moment it appeared,...

We know what you’re thinking. You like Hellboy but think there’s something missing. Like, maybe a little…mecha.
Well, for those thinking exactly that, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola has heard your cries of woe and answered them.
Mignola has reunited with artist Duncan Fegredo for Giant Robot Hellboy, a three-issue mini-series that promises to be exactly what the title lays out, a Hellboy that is one giant mecha.
Mignola wrote the series while Fegredo, with whom the creator worked on Hellboy: Darkness Calls, Hellboy: The Wild Hunt, and Hellboy: The Storm and The Fury, is handling the art. The comic will mark Fegredo’s first interior work since 2019 as the artist has focused mostly on covers since then. Eisner Award-winning colorist Dave Stewart and longtime Hellboy Universe letterer Clem Robins are also on the book.

There’s all kinds of ways to build a creative program, but the two big ones are to follow a specific editorial plan or to work with a curated group of popular creators and let them do their thing.
The first is most common; you tend to see the second in more highbrow media areas, like prestige publishing imprints and classical music…and, maybe, that means they’re already in a sub-genre, but just don’t like to think of themselves that way.
In the ’90s, DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint was undergoing a slow-motion transformation. It formed out of a cluster of very popular comics that were mostly Type One (superhero comics taken seriously!) but were often presented to the public as Type Two (all British writers! all the time!). But the core superhero universe was on its own path to take itself seriously, in a very different and much more tedious way (pouches!

There will probably be spoilers. If you worry about such things on a thirty-year-old obscure Vertigo comic, well, I wonder how you manage to live in the modern world, but go off and read something else on the Internet instead.
I don’t think I read this the first time out. I think I’d remember it. But it also is very much the kind of thing I was reading in 1993: I followed nearly all of Vertigo, and was a fan of Peter Milligan’s writing. So I both don’t know how I missed it and can’t figure out how I could have read it and utterly forgotten it.
I’m talking about Enimga: The Definitive Edition , a spiffy new-ish edition of an eight-issue comics series from those heady early Vertigo days, when it was “superhero comics with adult themes” and not “HBO-style shows in comics form.

Duncan Jones’ “Mooniverse” trilogy is coming to an end with the debut of his graphic novel “Madi: Once Upon A Time In The Future.” The book is the third and final entry in Jones’ science-fiction series that launched in 2009 with his indie film favorite “Moon” and continued with his polarizing 2018 Netflix original movie “Mute.” Each entry tells a different story set within the same universe. Jones’ “Moon,” starring Sam Rockwell in a dual role, was a critical favorite and has become a cult favorite over the last decade. Jones announced last summer he would complete the “Mooniverse” with a graphic novel, and now a Kickstarter has launched (via Empire) in which fans can purchase the final product and get a first look at the book.
“Madi” is billed as a “260-page road trip graphic novel” from Jones and writer Alex de Campi. The two collaborators partnered with artists such as Glenn Fabry,...

This is the 25th anniversary of Mike Mignola’s first Hellboy comic book and, unlike the work-for-hire creators of Batman, Iron Man, the X-Men and most other comics properties, he actually owns his creation. On Saturday, the writer-artist and his scarlet-hued brainchild will step into the spotlight at New York Comic Con for a panel promoting their latest Hollywood adventure, the upcoming Hellboy film from Summit Entertainment.
The April 2019 theatrical release from Liongate’s Summit will be the third Hollywood adaptation of Mignola’s demonic do-gooder but, oddly, it will be the second of them to be released with that single-word title. The new movie isn’t a remake of director Guillermo del Toro’s 2004 film titled Hellboy, so why duplicate the name?
Mignola tells Deadline he was initially caught off guard by the choice but then came to see value within its symbolism. With a new star, new director,...

Creator Mike Mignola recently noted that Neil Marshall’s Hellboy reboot, a darker (and rated R) vision than Guillermo del Toro’s films, is going to be as faithful to the comic books as possible, particularly adapting three Duncan Fegredo-illustrated miniseries’ in the world of comics: Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, and The Storm and the Fury.
