The Women’s Image Awards has announced its 2018 nominations, with the BBC miniseries “Little Women” that aired on PBS’ “Masterpiece” series earning a leading six bids on the TV side. As for films, “Mary Queen of Scots” secured five spots on the ballot, followed by the Ruth Bader Ginsberg biopic “On the Basis of Sex” and Melissa McCarthy’s “Can Your Ever Forgive Me,” both with four.
Given the #MeToo and Time’s Up movement’s push against sexual harassment and lack of equal opportunity for women in Hollywood, the fact that an organization like Women’s Image Awards exists is more important than ever. The group that is celebrating its 20th anniversary has just announced its nominations in 18 categories. The TV and film nominees are selected from a field of submissions from networks and studios.

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 25 to cast their ballots for program nominations (save for animated documentary/nonfiction which are restricted to their peer groups.) Unlike the Oscars, Emmy voters do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Last year that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.
While there has been an explosion in the number of comedy and drama series in the last several years, the limited series genre had been almost static. There were 25 entries in 2015, 26 in 2016 and 25 again in 2017. But this year there has been an uptick, with 33 such shows submitted. This week’s Genius: Picasso closes with Dora Maar undergoing an intense electroshock therapy treatment after her romantic relationship with Pablo Picasso has, for all intents and purposes, ended. It shows the pattern of how Picasso affected and treated his lovers over time but especially Maar (Samantha Colley), who he considered more an equal in terms of intellect and talents than most of the other women in his life. The episode also shows older Picasso (Antonio Banderas) brazenly managing two love affairs between Maar and Francoise Gilot. The drama also weaves in footage of the younger Pablo (Alex Rich), who finds […]

What is the role of an artist in a time of international crisis? Are they bound to use their platform to speak up, either through their work or other means? Or should they remain silent, stuck in their lane and apolitical?
The second season of National Geographic’s anthology “Genius” takes a hard stand for the former. The limited series, which followed Albert Einstein’s life last season, turns its gaze to Spanish painter Pablo Picasso in the late 1930s. Fascism is on the rise, and the curators of Paris’ Exposition Universelle want Picasso to create something on a giant, wall-sized canvas at the expo. But they don’t want just any Picasso painting — they want something that will speak to this moment, to the fear of creeping Nazism across Europe.
“The threat is enormous, so the picture must be enormous, so as to move the people,” one of the curators says.

Does it matter that someone is brilliant if nobody cares to pay attention?
That’s the dilemma that Albert Einstein (Johnny Flynn) is facing on Nat Geo’s “Genius” on Tuesday. When last we saw our budding physicist, he had just married the love of his life, Mileva (Samantha Colley), after they lost their daughter.
Responsible life partner that he is (finally!), he also accepted a position as a patent office clerk that his friend had procured for me. It’s steady hours, steady income, and judging from his expression in the final moments last week, steady boredom. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, especially one like Einstein’s.

Albert Einstein: physicist, Nobel laureate, romantic and … owl? Trying to get a handle on the complex person whose name is literally synonymous with genius was the biggest challenge for Nat Geo Channel’s first scripted anthology series, which even has the title “Genius.”
Einstein was best associated with his theory of relativity, which is one of the two pillars of modern physics, and his mass-energy equivalence formula, E=mc². Beyond the science and iconic shock of grey hair, though, was a man who started out very differently from how we now perceive him.

In accomplishments, impact, and general appearance, there are few figures in history who need an introduction less than Albert Einstein, a man whose impact on global culture is well-documented and rarely disputed. “Genius,” National Geographic’s largest foray into scripted drama to date, wants to make the point that, even in his day, Einstein was already a celebrity.
Out on the streets of Berlin as a rally passes or in a lecture hall with eager observers lining the rafters, the Einstein of “Genius” becomes a figure that demands attention. His scientific insights made him a target for fascist suppressors and inquisitive thinkers alike, which makes the show’s continuous decision to boldly intone Einstein’s greatness, as if it were something to be proven, all the more curious. Context is vital to understanding the man’s true achievements, but the self-imposed, continuous weight of history somehow robs this series of...

In our peak television age, National Geographic hasn’t made much of an impact. It seems that they’re hoping to change that, however, with Genius, their first dramatic series starring Geoffrey Rush as none other than Albert Einstein. The anthology drama follows the world’s greatest innovators one season at a time, and viewers can now get a glimpse at what season 1 holds in store with the show’s newest trailer.
Adapted from Walter Isaacson’s acclaimed biography Einstein: His Life and Universe, along with some of Einstein’s personal letters, Genius hopes to become what Mad Men was for AMC and what House of Cards became for Netflix. It’s a high-profile new dramatic series and the network certainly isn’t slouching, even bringing in Ron Howard to direct the pilot. Go big or go home, right?

Endeavour series 3 comes to a moribund end with its final episode, Coda...
This review contains spoilers.
3.4 Coda
The final episode of Endeavour’s third series opens with a funeral. It’s far from unexpected, given that we’ve been noting disturbing hints of impending tragedy ever since we first learnt of Thursday’s failing health. However, the cortege belongs to someone else entirely: local villain Harry Rose, whose mourners are under the surveillance of none other than Thursday and Strange. The scene neatly encapsulates two of the major characteristics of the show in general, and this series in particular. Its melancholy points to sad events yet to come, while highlighting writer Russell Lewis’ taste for allusions to scenes and characters familiar to fans of Inspector Morse. The gangland funeral in Kensal Green cemetery is a direct reference to a scene in the 1991 episode, Promised Land, and the...

A very earthy and spookily atmospheric production suffers from some dated attitudes: not those of the 1690s but the 1950s. I’m “biast” (pro): love Richard Armitage
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
On Saturday night I attended a performance of a new production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible at London’s legendary Old Vic theatre (where Kevin Spacey is currently the artistic director). I’d never seen the play before, nor had I read it — I knew about it only generally, as Miller’s allegorical take on McCarthyism, written during its height, via a semifictionalized account of the Salem witch trials of the late 17th century. Frankly, I was interested mostly because Richard Armitage is starring, and I wanted to see if he is as mesmerizing onstage as he is onscreen.
