Richard McLendon was born and raised in Troy, Alabama. He is the only
child of Doris D. McLendon and the late Charles E. McLendon. He has
spent over 40 years as a composer and more than 30 years as a
conductor, music educator and event organizer.
Music has been integral to Dr. McLendon's life since his first public performance at the age of five. Music composition has been his passion since the age of 15. At the age of 18, his high school percussion ensemble premiered one of his original compositions. He conducted the premier of one of his compositions at the age of 20.
Dr. McLendon has studied music composition with Dr. David L. Walters, Jim Mahaffey, and Robert W. Smith. Dr. McLendon's music compositions have been recognized and honored by the Percussive Arts Society (1984) and by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (2006-2012). He studied conducting with Dr. John M. Long who is a member of the National Band Association Hall of Fame of Distinguished Conductors.
Dr. McLendon's performing ensembles have toured most of the United States, parts of Canada, most of western and central Europe, and the countries of Ecuador and Colombia, South America. One tour in particular covered 8 countries in 3 1/2 weeks presenting 17 concerts.
Dr. McLendon has earned four university degrees that include the Bachelor of Science in Education, the Master of Music in Percussion Performance, the Educational Specialist in Music Education, and the Doctor of Education in Leadership. A published researcher and composer, he has been recognized many times by Who's Who Among America's Teachers, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World. He is also the proud father of two sons.
