To prepare myself for viewing The Demon’s Rook, I sat down and watched writer/director James Sizemore’s short film “Goat Witch”. From that, I took away that even if Rook was terrible, I was going to be in for some spectacularly gory practical effects, and probably some nudity. People, sometimes that’s all I’m looking for in my horror movie. I’m pretty easy to please, what can I say? As it turns out, The Demon’s Rook is exactly that, a practical effects showcase with just a bit of an identity problem that prevents it from being truly good.

Channeling the relentless work ethic of practical effects gurus like Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero, a team led by James Sizemore crafted old-school zombies and hellish creatures galore for The Demon’s Rook, a fright film now available to view on VOD platforms. Earlier this week we showed you exclusive artwork provided to us by Tribeca Film and we’re back with another look at the movie’s ghoulish goods.
“It was clear that these were never going to be “scary” creatures in the classical sense, so we went more the route of Nightbreed than Alien,” said producer Tim Reis. “Lots of screentime. With designs as incredible as these, it felt wrong to keep them off screen. It may not exactly be an excercise in restraint but that was never the intention. We want you to see these monsters.”
“The process of making the demon masks was especially tricky,” said co-writer/director/star James Sizemore.

It may be new, but Tribeca Film’s The Demon’s Rook looks like a lost flick from the midnight horror heyday of the 1980’s, when you could watch practical effects ooze from the tube late into the night. With The Demon’s Rook now available on VOD platforms, we’ve been provided with exclusive artwork, along with behind-the-scenes photos from the old school-styled, practical effects-laden creature feature.
“I’ve been drawing and painting creatures all my life. Putting them down on paper is the easy part for me, but bringing them into our plane of existence takes a specialized kind of wizardry that took me a while to figure out,” said co-writer/director/star James Sizemore

It may be new, but The Demon’s Rook is like a lost flick from the midnight horror heyday of the 1980′s, when you could slurp soda and chew pepperoni pizza late into the night as practical effects terror emanated from the tube. Tribeca Film is hearkening back to those delectable days gone by with the upcoming on demand release of The Demon’s Rook, showcased in a new trailer and poster.
The Demon’s Rook will be available on VOD platforms beginning September 30th. We have the official synopsis, trailer, and poster below:
“Chaos descends upon a quiet town when Roscoe, the pupil of a wizard monk from an ancient race of demons, unknowingly opens a portal that allows an unspeakable evil to travel freely into our world. The Demon's Rook looks like a crazy fun movie that channels a lot of the things I loved about 1980s horror films. It's a low-budget movie that uses some really cool and creepy practical effects and makeup. This trailer gives you a sense of the insanity that you'll see in the film, and I can't help but smile.

Ready for a look at a contemporary horror flick that channels 1980's low budget creature feature fun? Shock is happy to bring you the trailer debut for The Demon's Rook which Tribeca acquired out of the film festival circuit last year and is bringing to iTunes and VOD September 30th.
James Sizemore directed the film. I recently caught his short film Goat Witch at the Fantasia International Film Festival and it maintains that Demon's Rook vibe, so he's definitely into that retro vibe that calls on copious amounts of practical FX and foam latex (no complaints here!).

If you grew up as a horror film fanatic in the 1980s, you may have run through most of the American slasher flicks and occult thrillers -- and then you rented Lucio Fulci's 1980 cult favorite Zombie, which hopefully led you to all sorts of gore-laden apocalyptic mayhem from Italian splatter-slingers like Umberto Lenzi (Nightmare City), Lamberto Bava (Demons), and Bruno Mattei (Night of the Zombies) -- which hopefully led you back to more Lucio Fulci. Anyway that's sort of what happened to me, and while it's true that the more refined "giallo" thrillers from directors like Dario Argento seem to get most of the respect these days, lots of horror fans still enjoy those cheap, gory, sometimes awful Italian zombie flicks.
If you're one of those people, there's a very good chance you'll enjoy a new low-budget independent horror flick called The Demon's Rook, which was made by a...

Some of the fest titles we've shared with you already, in some form or another: for example, we took a look at James Wan's The Conjuring, the grim Israeli killer flick Big Bad Wolves, Mike Mendez's monster bash Big Ass Spider! and E.L. Katz's mind-games thriller Cheap Thrills; some titles like V/H/S/2 and the psycho-thriller Magic Magic are seeing their theatrical, DVD and/or On Demand premieres this month, and Adam Wingard's You're Next screens at Comic-Con tonight.
