It’s that time year again—when one might, upon their daily neighborhood perambulation, casually stumble upon a man dressed in a blood-splattered full-body jumpsuit and think to themself, this is perfectly fine and normal. But that’s the Halloween season for you, when the ghosts and goblins and AMC-obsessed Nicole Kidmans are out in full force for their yearly Halloween rituals.
Aside from meticulously inserting razor blades into the apples we all intend to hand out to local children, everyone’s favorite part of the Halloween season is—of course—the excuse to binge-watch our favorite horror movies, from the silly-scary (Hocus Pocus), to the fun-scary (Trick R Treat), to the scary-scary (The Evil Dead) or the really scary-scary (any news channel). In fact, horror movies have long been an integral part of the indie film ecosystem—turning minuscule budgets into huge box office numbers and launching the...

Legendary Entertainment has acquired the film, television, and ancillary rights to Paolo Coelho’s novel The Alchemist and will steer the feature film development of the project with Sony’s TriStar Pictures and Palmstar.
Jack Thorne, who adapted the family hit Wonder, and Netflix’s Enola Holmes, is attached to write.
The Alchemist tells the story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy, who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way are pieces of wisdom which encourage those who find them to listen to their hearts, read the omens strewn along life’s path and follow their dreams. Originally written in Portuguese in 1988, Coelho’s novel became an international bestseller, and holds the record for the most translated work by a living author. Sony Pictures’ “Bloodshot,” a comic book movie and superhero thriller starring Vin Diesel, earned $1.2 million at the box office in its Thursday night previews beginning at 5 p.m. from over 2,631 screens. It opens on over 2,800 screens this weekend.
In second place among new releases and what was expected could be the biggest wide opening this weekend was “I Still Believe,” the faith-based movie from Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company that earned $780,000 in previews. Behind that was Universal and Blumhouse’s provocative thriller “The Hunt,” which made $435,000.
All three films are opening a day after studios canceled and postponed a wave of tentpole movies meant to come out between this month and the middle of the summer over fears of the coronavirus, so time will tell just how much of an effect that will have on the remaining films at the box office.

There’s often times when you hear the mention of a particular filmmaker, and immediately recoil, as if the actual words have caused an indelible stain on your very soul. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that’s John Herzfield, because I quite enjoyed his 1996 ensemble caper, 2 Days In The Valley. But those with a more discerning and high cultural palette may not be interested to know, what has he been up to recently?
Reach Me is his latest affair with a starry cast – but has he learned from mistakes past? It’s hard to gauge his efficacy as a filmmaker from a brief trailer, so I’m gonna give him the benefit of the doubt. Millennium Entertainment acquired all U.S. rights to John Herzfeld’s dramedy Reach Me, and Sylvester Stallone, Kyra Sedgwick, Kevin Connelly, Terry Crews, Thomas Jane, Danny Aiello, and Tom Berenger head the cast. Herzfeld wrote the script, and he produces with Rebekah Chaney, Cassian Elwes, and Buddy Patrick. The film, which was long in the works and was crowdfunded for finishing funds (initially on Kickstarter, they switched to Indiegogo), will be released in select cities and then on demand October 24. Exclusive: e2b Capital’s Robert Ogden Barnum and Cassian Elwes have teamed with Windy Hill Pictures’ Buddy Patrick to form Lifeboat Capital, a service that will provide bridge financing to makers of indie films. The trio will manage the fund from Los Angeles and New Orleans. The plan is to make loans of between $1 million and $5 million to between 15-20 films. Piecing together indie films is a tightrope walk, and the service aims to be a resource for filmmakers who fall short of the funding mark, or have to scramble if a financial commitment disappears. Between Barnum, Elwes and Patrick, they’ve financed or assisted in funding over 200 films. They will use a combination of institutional lenders, private equity and commercial banks here. “Bridge lending, while considered a high risk business, is often a requirement on independent films that need to commence production while simultaneously closing loans and completion bonds,...

That's right — "Lee Daniels' The Butler" has 39 credited producers to its name, and it isn't just Lee Daniels 39 times. We're not sure if this is a record, but we are sure that it's a lot of f**king producers.
So what, exactly, did each producer do for the movie? In a NextMovie exclusive, we've obtained a verified* list of the various roles each producer filled during the production of the film. Needless to say, each was wholly necessary to the quality of the end result.
*Note: By "verified" we mean "not verified."
Horatio Bacon: Responsible for convincing director Lee Daniels to not film the movie in 3D.
Julia Barry: Responsible with supplying the production office with the proper Nerf guns for anticipated downtime.
Len Blavatnik: Responsible for assaulting any "nerd" who insists on putting another "s" after the apostrophe in the film's title.

The Weinstein Company has picked up distribution rights to his star-studded period drama The Butler, directed by Precious helmer Lee Daniels.
Based on the screenplay by Danny Strong (who just won an Emmy last night for Game Change) and Daniels, The Butler is inspired by Wil Haygood’s Washington Post article about an African-American man who served as a butler (Forest Whitaker) to eight Presidents such as Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon in the White House for over thirty years.
Obviously, Harvey Weinstein has liked what he’s seen of the footage. The film, which has been shooting down in New Orleans for weeks, also stars Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, John Cusack, Jane Fonda, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Terrence Howard, Minka Kelly, Lenny Kravitz, Melissa Leo, James Marsden, David Oyelowo, Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Redgrave, Alan Rickman, Liev Schreiber and Robin Williams.
