Patti Davis, the daughter of Ronald Reagan, stated that her father would not want to have any association with today’s Republican Party.
“[Reagan] was much more moderate on a whole host of issues, while at the same time, much more hawkish on Russia than what you’re seeing from the modern day Republican party,” CNN’s Jim Acosta, the chief domestic correspondent for CNN, said to Davis during an interview.
“What would your father think about what he’s seeing right now,” he then asked her. “Do you have any insights on that?”
“Well I’d – I’d like to answer your question in sort of a bigger – from a bigger view than – than, you know, current – the current political scene,” Davis responded. “I’m not a political strategist, and quite frankly, I’m so tired of hearing about the current political scene.

CNN is turning some of the lights out on its efforts to produce morning news.

At least one of the big companies that distribute CNN via cable or satellite is unnerved by how closely the company’s new live-streaming service looks like its TV network.
Big satellite distributor DirecTV has let executives at Warner Bros. Discovery know via letter that its executives believe the similarities between the two products violate the carriage contract between the two companies, according to a person familiar with the matter. The new CNN streaming service, CNN Max, just launched last week and includes many of programs that run on linear CNN, including “CNN This Morning,” “The Lead With Jake Tapper” and “Anderson Cooper 360.”
The New York Times previously reported the contretemps between DirecTV and Warner Bros. Discovery.
“Wbd maintains strong and meaningful relationships with our affiliate partners. Our partners are aware of and understand our rationale with Max, which is to reach new audiences,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a statement.

All customers of Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform can now watch live news content from CNN.
Max is now officially in the news streaming business. Warner Bros. Discovery has launched its new CNN Max content hub on Max, meaning subscribers of the Max with Ads, Max Ad-Free and Ultimate Max Ad-Free plans all get live news, breaking updates, and much more. Wbd first announced it was bringing live news from CNN to Max in August.
“We have the broadest and highest quality entertainment offering, and now will include world-leading news as a meaningful addition for all Max subscribers, at no extra charge,” Wbd’s head of streaming J.B. Perrette said. “CNN Max is differentiated by having 24/7 news at its core from CNN, the leading global news organization, and being available on a scaled streaming service in the U.S., which has a significantly younger and additive audience compared to traditional TV.

CNN ventured back into streaming on Wednesday with the launch of CNN Max, a service that diverges from its past efforts in the way that it mirrors so much of the schedule of the linear network.
Primetime shows like Erin Burnett OutFront, Anderson Cooper 360 and The Source With Kaitlan Collins, as well as morning programming including Early Start with Kasie Hunt and CNN This Morning are on the scheduled unveiled on Wednesday. CNN’s new streaming product is set to look an awful lot like its familiar cable network.
CNN Max, which debuted Wednesday, has been touted as a way to get news giant’s content out to a increasing number of cord-cutters and consumers who no longer view cable as their primary way to get video entertainment and information. And parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, in the belief, perhaps, that a streaming subscription is just as good as one to a cable or satellite service, is making the bulk of its linear lineup available to the broadband crowd.
The weekday schedule of CNN Max features several new hours led by anchors such as Jim Acosta, Fredricka Whitfield, Rahel Solomon and Jim Scuitto. But a significant chunk of the service is built on CNN’s linear morning, late-afternoon and primetime schedule. When all is said and done, Max viewers will be able...

Sean Penn urged the White House to take a more aggressive approach toward arming Ukraine, telling a crowd at a screening of his film Superpower that those who are influencing U.S. policy “need to get out of the pure caution business.”
“I don’t mind being foolish in saying that I deeply believe, whether Democrat or Republican, if this was an issue that one of the parties chose to commit to, in arming Ukraine, that not only would it be a principal win, but it would be a political win. I think we are hungering for that kind of decisiveness,” Penn told CBS News’ Major Garrett.
“Caution has been very important, humanly and politically … But many times in emergencies, restraint is the enemy of action,” Penn added. “I think that there are influential people, perhaps influential with our president, who they themselves need to be encouraged to get out...

NBC News may trump its rivals when it comes to interviewing a certain former Commander-in-Chief.
David Muir, Lesley Stahl, John Dickerson, Chris Wallace, Bill O’Reilly, Kaitlan Collins and Jim Acosta have all tried their hand at interviewing Donald Trump; lobbing questions at him; or moderating a debate or event in which his participation was key. Some have drawn blood and others have been bloodied (and some others left agog as Trump walked out unexpectedly). But anchors and reporters working for NBC News seem to have the most success at keeping him in line while trying to elicit big news out of him.
Kristen Welker has the next turn at bat. She has pre-taped an interview with Trump that is one of the main features of her first broadcast at the helm of NBC News’ “Meet The Press.” The NBCUniversal-backed outlet has already revealed that Trump told her he was...

As CNN races to catch up with the streaming world, its strategy in launching CNN Max — more than a year after the failure of CNN+ — will be a hat trick: offer news on its main subscription platform while preserving as much of its fast-declining linear audience as possible.
The pressing need to get CNN into the streaming space is obvious. Competitors like Fox News have already begun building an audience on their own streaming services. And adding news to the Max platform gives Warner Bros. Discovery a significant leg up over competitors like Netflix and Disney+, which currently do not carry live news at all.
“There is only one CNN and a significant number of U.S. homes have cut the cord. So if you don’t have a robust streaming solution, you can’t reach them,” Dave Morgan, CEO of cross-channel TV advertising firm Simulmedia, told TheWrap.

The new Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform Max announced Thursday the addition of CNN Max, a 24/7 news service that will be free to subscribers.
The streaming news offering will launch Sept. 27, just over a year after the hastily aborted launch of CNN+. That project, which launched in May of 2022, was shut down three weeks later as the Warner Bros. merger with Discovery was freshly underway.
“CNN Max will leverage CNN’s reporting excellence, global newsgathering, and live programming from CNN US, CNN International, and feature original programming built specifically for Max,” the company said in a Thursday release. “CNN Max will be a new seven-day-a-week/24-hour service and be part of an open beta for news that will enable experimentation with product features, content offerings and original storytelling, all with the input and feedback from the Max community.”
The service will feature known CNN anchors and new programming built specifically for the streaming platform.

CNN, whose brief foray into subscription streaming was snuffed out shortly after the close of the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger in April 2022, is officially getting real estate on Max.
A new offering, CNN Max, will be added to the streaming service in what Warner Bros. Discovery called an “open beta” on September 27. It will consist of a 24/7 stream pulled from the news network’s U.S. and international feeds, with a sprinkling of original fare, with user feedback welcomed. For many reasons, some having to do with contracts with pay-tv operators, it won’t be a full-over-the top version of linear CNN, and certain talent and new shows like the new 9 p.m. hour hosted by Kaitlan Collins will not be in the mix.
Wbd CEO David Zaslav hinted at the new venture during the company’s quarterly earnings call several weeks ago, saying news and sports make SVOD platforms “come alive.

CNN, grappling with shortfalls in linear TV ratings, unveiled a new programming schedule that will put new faces in key weekday slots and launch new weekend programs for veterans Chris Wallace and Christiane Amanpour.
Pamela Brown, Kasie Hunt, Victor Blackwell and Manu Raju are among the journalists who will have new solo-anchored hours. On the first day of SAG-AFTRA picketing after the union called a strike, a hot topic of conversation was the assertion by an unnamed studio executive that the studios’ endgame in the WGA strike was to “break the WGA” and allow the strike to go on until people lost their homes.
Ron Perlman came out swinging on Friday in direct response, and comedian, SAG-AFTRA member and WGA contract negotiating committee member Adam Conover slammed those comments himself on CNN Saturday, saying the striking writers and actors are going to be the ones starving the studios out.
“I mean first of all, it’s offensive that the CEOs that we’re negotiating against literally said to the press that their goal is to starve us out until we lose our apartments and homes,” Conover told CNN’s Jim Acosta, referring to the unnamed executive’s comments in Deadline last week. “I...

Responding to a Tuesday report that CNN’s ratings are dropping below Newsmax, Megyn Kelly called the news network’s current predicament “a true existential crisis,” targeted former CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker as “the grim reaper” and slammed its slate of anchors as “Trump haters.”
She did, however, spare some kind words for Jake Tapper, who she said “at least tries to be fair.”
“I know people don’t agree with me, but that’s how I see him,” she said.
The segment of Tuesday’s episode of “The Megyn Kelly Show” came as Kelly and her pair of guests, The Federalist editor Emily Jashinsky and Washington Free Beacon editor-in-chief Eliana Johnson, responded to The Daily Beasts reporting on CNN that found “last week, the cable news pioneer suffered its lowest-rated week since June 2015, averaging just 429,000 total daily viewers from Monday-Friday.”

Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav weighed in on CNN’s controversial decision to host a live town-hall format Q&a with former President Donald Trump — defending the decision as needing to represent “both sides.”
“The U.S. has a divided government. We need to hear both voices,” Zaslav said, speaking Friday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” when asked about Trump’s scheduled May 10 appearance on CNN. “Republicans are on the air on CNN, Democrats are on the air… When we do politics, we need to represent both sides. I think it’s important for America.”
Zaslav continued about Trump, “He’s the front-runner — he has to be on our network. We’re happy he’s coming on there.”
“This is a new CNN,” Zaslav said. “I’m proud of CNN, we’re on a great journey and this country needs it.”

Donald Trump and CNN have in recent years seemed to go together as well as Coca-Cola and mayonnaise, which is to say not at all. Now the two entities are teaming up for a town-hall program to be broadcast next week.
Kaitlan Collins, the former Washington correspondent turned morning anchor who was often called out by Trump during rallies and press scrums, will moderate a live CNN Town Hall with the former president on May 10 from St. Anselm College in New Hampshire. Trump, who has declared his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, will take questions from an audience of New Hampshire Republicans and undeclared voters who say they intend to vote in the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary.

Donald Trump will make his first appearance on CNN in many years next week, when he appears in a town hall event sponsored by the network.
The network announced that Trump would take questions from Republicans and undeclared voters at the May 10 event, with CNN This Morning anchor Kaitlan Collins moderating. It will take place at St. Anselm College.
Trump targeted the network throughout his presidency and afterward, repeatedly calling it “fake news” to the point it became a chant among his supporters.
CNN said that it “has a longstanding tradition of hosting leading presidential candidates for town halls and political events as a critical component of the network’s robust campaign coverage.”
During his administration, Trump largely shunned the network save for press conference interactions with its then-White House correspondent, Jim Acosta. But under Chris Licht, who succeeded Jeff Zucker as the head of the network last year, CNN has de-emphasized opinion and analysis,...

CNN unveiled a revamped daytime slate and anchor trios Wednesday that aim to take a “fresh approach” to its daytime programming through two new programs.
The network will host a standalone weekday 9 a.m.–12 p.m. Eastern block anchored by John Berman, Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner out of CNN’s New York studios, while the subsequent 1 p.m.–4 p.m. Eastern standalone program will be hosted by Brianna Keilar, Boris Sanchez and Jim Sciutto.
The new daytime lineup resumes the network’s shakeup under the leadership of CNN Worldwide Chairman and CEO Chris Licht, who stunned viewers in September when he shifted network staple Don Lemon from hosting his own primetime show to co-anchoring “CNN This Morning” alongside Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins.

CNN said it would shuffle anchors across its weekday and weekend daytime schedules, grouping them together in new ways the network hopes will attract viewers as it attempts to work its way out of a longtime ratings shortfall.
John Berman, Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner will lead a three-hour mid-morning program from New York that lasts from 9 a.m. to noon, while Brianna Keilar, Boris Sanchez and Jim Sciutto will anchor a three-hour Washington, D.C. broadcast between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. John King will keep his noontime show “Inside Politics” on weekdays.
CNN intends to showcase an energetic “newsroom headquarters” concept that untethers anchors from their desks and tries to show newsgathering and reporting on screen most of the time. CNN, in its latest on-camera lineup moves, has unveiled plans for a new weekday show to run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., to be anchored by John Berman, Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner out of the New York City studios.
Also on daytime, CNN CEO Chris Licht has unveiled another new stand-alone news program to run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with Brianna Keilar, Boris Sanchez and Jim Sciutto as hosts out of the news channel’s Washington studios. The latest changes follow Licht boarding CNN in May 2022 with a mandate to “reimagine” the 24/7 news channel.
“We are leaning into our greatest strengths, showcasing our unparalleled newsgathering operation and giving our anchors the room to be more authentic. We’ve seen how our audience responds to this format, and we believe it will put us in a position of strength going into the evening and primetime hours,” Licht said in a statement.

CNN unveiled an overhaul of its dayside lineup on Wednesday, with plans for morning and afternoon blocks of programming that will each feature anchor trios while emphasizing more energetic breaking news and event coverage.
The approach, the network indicated, would resemble the network’s special event coverage like election night, with a heavy use of graphics and standing anchors, along with ongoing updates from correspondents in the field. A recent example was the way that the network provided ongoing coverage last week of the House Speaker vote.

Don Lemon defended CNN CEO Chris Licht on Wednesday from “unfair” criticisms for making changes at the network, including shaking up the primetime lineup and making major personnel decisions.

CNN has no plans to replace Brian Stelter’s just-canceled “Reliable Sources” with another media-focused show in the foreseeable future, TheWrap has learned.
“There are a number of programs in the concept and development phases, and it’s possible media coverage will be an element of a show,” a network insider told TheWrap, “but no indication that an exclusively media beat show is part of the plan.”
A CNN spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
Experts say that the cancellation of the show — launched after attacks on media coverage of the Gulf War in 1993 — exacerbates the dearth of mainstream media criticism given media critic Margaret Sullivan’s recent departure from The Washington Post and columnist Ben Smith’s exit from The New York Times

Back in 2018, deep in the dark days of the Trump administration, CNN began running a new series of advertisements for itself. They were called the “Facts First” spots and mostly involved people mistaking a banana for an apple.
“This is an apple,” one of the 60-second promos began, showing a plump red honeycrisp in front of a white backdrop as a piano tinkled a pensive tune. “Some people might tell you it’s a banana. They might scream ‘banana, banana, banana’ over and over again. They might put banana in all caps. You might even start to believe that this is a banana. But it’s not. This is an apple.”
It was a simple, elegant metaphor that said everything you need to know about the nightmare of cable news broadcasting during the Trump era.

NPR’s Eric Deggans has some concern about the more apolitical direction that CNN is seeking under its new boss Chris Licht, saying on the network, “I hope that what we’re not going to see CNN do is institute some sort of false equivalence.”
On the final episode of“Reliable Sources” Sunday, the NPR TV critic said he thinks the problem with the perception of the media right now is the lens through which it looks at today’s politics and the lack of accountability for politicians who break the law or use damaging rhetoric.
“The problem is that people put a political lens on top of something that is about preserving democracy and about holding politicians accountable,” Deggans said during his segment on Brian Stelter’s final show, which was canceled last week. “When you have one politician who’s denouncing the press as the enemy of the people.

Since the sudden, inelegant firing of chief media correspondent Brian Stelter this week and the cancellation of his show, “Reliable Sources,” the CNN newsroom has been abuzz with speculation over who might be next to go, as the message has spread that the network is going more middle of the road.

It was not to be. The news leaked on Thursday and once again the CNN newsroom is aflutter with anxiety and rumor: What is new chairman and CEO Chris Licht’s plan for the future of the news network? Why would Stelter, a respected media journalist, get the boot along with his show? Who else is at risk to get the ax after Stelter and, last week, legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin? Will the outspoken primetime host Don Lemon or Jim Acosta, the sometimes combative chief domestic correspondent, be next?
To many observers and network insiders, Licht aims to tone down any politically-pointed coverage in a pivot from the strategy pursued by his flashier predecessor,...

“All in the Family” made Archie Bunker one of the most famous right-wing characters in television history, but Rob Reiner thinks that the Jan. 6 attacks would have been a bridge too far for the patriotic patriarch when it comes to supporting Donald Trump.
In a CNN interview with Jim Acosta on Saturday about the 100th birthday of “All in the Family” creator Norman Lear, Reiner was asked about a New York Times op-ed written by Lear in which he argued that Bunker would have supported Trump but be “sickened” by the sight of the president’s supporters attacking Capitol Police during the Washington D.C. insurrection. Reiner said that Lear “expressed it perfectly.”
“I do think that Archie would have been really upset to see cops beaten by insurgents,” Reiner said. “And then to find out as time goes by that Trump was at the hub of all this, and...

Onetime Trump Administration Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is projected to win the Republican primary in the race to be Arkansas’ next governor, a position held by her father from 1996-2007. The Associated Press called the primary race in Sanders’ favor early this evening.
Huckabee Sanders took over the White House Briefing Room podium from Sean Spicer in July 2017 and almost immediately established herself as a fierce defender of Trump and his policies. Her tenure was marked by sometimes-ugly clashes with with the White House press corps — famously CNN’s Jim Acosta — and Democrats’ accusations she spread falsehoods.
Trump announced her departure with an appreciative 2019 tweet in which he also said, “I hope she decides to run for Governor of Arkansas – she would be fantastic. Sarah, thank you for a job well done!”
A few months later, she debuted as a Fox News contributor on Fox & Friends.

Actor Sean Penn spoke with Fox News and MSNBC Tuesday night about the situation on the ground in Ukraine and discussed ways to support the war-ravaged country.
Penn was in Ukraine shooting a documentary for Vice about the country, its President Volodymyr Zelensky and the rising tensions on the border with Russia when Russia invaded Ukraine in February. As things began to escalate, Penn had to leave the country. He has since returned to Ukraine and also has spent time in the neighboring Poland both for the documentary and for the humanitarian effort though the Core relief organization he co-founded.
Tonight, Penn appeared in person on Sean Hannity’s Fox News program Hannity. Referencing the duo’s opposing political views, Hannity started off by mentioning how the two first got in touch.
“I made the first phone call to you,” Hannity said. “Do you remember what you first said to me?...

Sean Penn spoke to cable viewers across the political spectrum on Tuesday night, appearing on both the right-leaning Fox News and left-leaning MSNBC within the span of two hours to discuss support for Ukraine amid the country’s invasion by Russian military forces.
Penn began the evening with an in-person appearance on the N.Y.-based “Hannity,” engaging in a conversation with Fox News conservative commentator Sean Hannity. Hannity began the segment by recounting how the comparatively liberal Penn decided to come onto the program.
“I made the first phone call to you,” Hannity began. “Do you remember what you first said to me?”
“I said ‘I don’t trust you,'” Penn responded. “But we have to get on with life… We all talk about how divisive things are, how divided things are here. When you step into a country of incredible unity, you realize what we’ve all been missing.

Sean Penn gave the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences an ultimatum Saturday regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of the Oscars. Penn, who took home Best Actor Academy Awards for Mystic River and Milk, told CNN’s Jim Acosta that the Oscars must have Zelensky on the program — otherwise, viewers and guests should boycott the ceremony.
The Oscars: How To Watch Online & On TV
“If it turns out to be what is happening, I would encourage everyone involved, though it may be their moment, and I understand that, to celebrate their films, it is so much more importantly their moment to shine, and to protest and to boycott that Academy Awards,” Penn said. “I myself, if it comes back to it, when I return, I will smelt mine in public. I pray that’s not what happens. I pray there have not been arrogant people who consider themselves...

Sean Penn has taken a hard stance against the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, vowing to publicly “smelt” his statuettes from the awards body if the organization elects against asking Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to speak during the live telecast of Sunday evening’s ceremony.
In a broadcast interview with CNN’s Jim Acosta, Penn argued that the Academy has an obligation to offer President Zelenskyy a platform to speak on Ukraine’s struggles as the country continues to combat invasion by Russian military forces.
“There is nothing greater that the Academy Awards could do than to give [Zelenskyy] an opportunity to talk to all of us,” Penn stated. “It is my understanding that a decision has been made not to do it. That is not me commenting on whether or not President Zelenskyy had wanted to… If the [Academy has] elected not to pursue the leadership in Ukraine, who are taking bullets and bombs for us,...

Ever since Jeff Zucker seized the reins at CNN in early 2013, the cable-news network has been one of loudest voices in media circles. Now, even though Discovery didn’t push the executive out, there’s a sense the company will, after it buys CNN along with the rest of WarnerMedia, look to turn down the volume.
In the Zucker era, CNN became more swashbuckling, more colorful, and indeed, more opinionated than it ever was under the aegis of its founder Ted Turner, or his successors at the former Time Warner. CNN went from delivering headlines to being in the headlines. It’s hard to imagine previous CNN leaders like Walter Isaacson or Tom Johnson encouraging moments like the one when Don Lemon in 2018 uttered, “This is CNN Tonight. I’m Don Lemon. The president of the United States is racist.” But Zucker pushed CNN to be blunt and unstinting in...

AT&T CEO John Stankey and Discovery CEO David Zaslav generally sidestepped questions about the exit of CNN boss Jeff Zucker amid dismay among the cable network’s on air talent and staffers over how the situation was handled.
“Jeff resigned and the decision to resign was Jeff’s decision and it’s an unfortunate set of circumstances,” Stankey told CNBC in an interview in Pebble Beach, CA.
According to sources familiar with what happened, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar, Zucker’s boss, made it clear that he either had to resign or would be terminated for failing to disclose a relationship with Allison Gollust, CNN’s marketing chief.
Yet there also has been ample other speculation over what led to Zucker’s exit.
When Joe Kernen pressed Stankey on whether there were “other things in play for whether he was out anyway,” citing John Malone’s comments about the network, Stankey said,...
