The Tampa Bay Times says it will no longer refer to a former Deadspin editor who faces criminal charges as a “journalist” because he abdicated that role and the responsibilities that come with it when he launched a political consulting firm several years ago.
In an editorial published this week, the hometown newspaper of Timothy Burke said it will instead refer to him as a “former journalist” when covering his criminal case that involves allegations of conspiracy and computer trespass connected to two major news organizations.
Last month, a federal grand jury accused Burke and an unnamed co-conspirator of misappropriating usernames and passwords belonging to media and sports organizations in order to gain unauthorized access to computer systems. Updated: A federal prosecutor is investigating the alleged hack of internal Fox News video footage of former host Tucker Carlson, as clips have surfaced on Vice and watchdog group Media Matters for America.
The Tampa Bay Times reported that the probe is linked to a recent FBI search of the home of media consultant Tim Burke, who formerly worked for Deadspin and The Daily Beast, and is married to Tampa Bay City Councilwoman Lynn Hurtak.
The Times cited a letter that Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Trezevant sent to the network, in which he wrote that Fox News was one of the “potential victim-witnesses” of the hacking. Deadline also obtained the letter, dated on Thursday, in which Trezevant wrote that the investigation is of allegations of unauthorized computer access, interception of wire, oral or electronic communication, conspiracy and other federal statutes.

Jamie Foxx vampire movie Day Shift, in its second week of availability on Netflix, topped a subdued field on Nielsen’s streaming chart for the week of August 15-21.
While no title cracked the 1 billion mark in terms of minutes of viewing for the first time since April, total streaming continued its precedent-setting dominance as a portion of the overall viewing pie. In its monthly snapshot, The Gauge, Nielsen said streaming accounted for 35 of all viewing in August. It held an edge over broadcast and cable TV for the second straight month after having reached that tipping point in July for the first time in history. (See the full Gauge chart below.)
At 957 million minutes of viewing, Day Shift surpassed The Sandman (No. 2 with 946 million) and Stranger Things. Starring Jamie Foxx, Dave Franco and Snoop Dogg, Day Shift drew an audience that was 55 multicultural, Nielsen said, with 25 of it African-American,...

During the Aug. 15-Aug. 21 viewing window, Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” broke into the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 chart at No. 4. Following the show’s Season 3 premiere, which arrived on the streaming platform on Aug. 12, the series garnered 883 million minutes watched during its first full week of availability.
“Day Shift” quickly leaped ahead of “The Sandman” for the No. 1 spot. After coming in at No. 4 the previous week shortly after its Aug. 12 release, the film charted 957 million minutes viewed.
“The Sandman” dropped to No. 2, receiving 946 minutes viewed in its second full week on the streaming platform. The ranking is a sharp decrease from the previous week’s 1.4 billion minutes watched. However, the series still holds its lead ahead of “Stranger Things” likely thanks to the premiere of the show’s bonus 11th episode, which debuted on Aug. 19.

Photo: ‘Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist’ Manti Te’o the Person Manti Te’o is older now. He sits in a dimly lit room, and outside, it’s something of a rainy evening. At 31 years old, he’s finally grown into himself, angular and chiseled. It’s a far cry from Te'o's once rather baby-faced likeness, which had been plastered on every tabloid and television in the nation a decade ago. He’s a man now -- with a wife, a daughter, and another child on the way. Looking at him, you see the poise of someone tried by adversity. And he looks like he could still play football too, as his linebacker’s build reminds you. He is, after all, an active NFL free agent, having been a member of the Chicago Bears as late as 2021. And no doubt teams will explore signing Te’o for the ratings...

Manti Te’o deserves an apology. Te’o, a Notre Dame great and one of the preeminent Hawaiian football players of his generation, had everything going for him to be another NFL success story from the Aloha State. Though, it all changed the second he got a friend request from a Stanford student named Lennay Kekua, one that would forever alter his career path and sadly define what should’ve been the most exciting part of his life.

Manti Te'o was inspired to revisit his story by something Jay-Z said at a concert, the football star revealed on CBS Mornings on Aug. 16. In the interview, Te'o said that one line Jay-Z rapped at the beginning of the show struck him, and eventually led him to tell his side of the story in the Netflix documentary "Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist."
Te'o was at a concert on Jay-z's 4:44 tour in 2017 with some teammates when he heard the fateful words. "At that concert, Jay-Z opens with saying these words, 'You cannot heal what you don't reveal,'" Te'o said. "And it may have been just some random words to everybody, but for me, at that time, it hit me like a ton of bricks."

Former all-star college footballer and current NFL free agent Manti Te’o is reliving his experience of being the target of an elaborate catfishing hoax in a new Netflix mini-docuseries Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist. The doc features interviews with Te’o and his catfisher Naya Tuiasosopo.
This incident occurred during Te’o’s senior season at Notre Dame, the last of a defensive college football career that saw him win several awards including being unanimously voted an All-American player in 2012. His relationship became the subject of media scrutiny when he announced that his girlfriend and grandmother had died on the same day in September 2012.
The sports blog Deadspin first broke in January of 2013 that the player’s supposed girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, was a false identity created by Tuiasosopo using photos of a classmate Diane O’Meara without her consent. While some first believed that Te’o was also behind the hoax,...

Football star Manti Te’o, the object of a notorious “catfishing” incident, is emerging from the stigma of national ridicule.
The former Notre Dame linebacker and Heisman Trophy runner-up revisits the scandal that turned him into a punchline in the new season of the Netflix documentary series Untold, executive produced by Chapman and Maclain Way. Not only does Te’o tell his story, but so does Naya Tuiasosopo as she is now known, the person who ensnared Te’o in the strange tale of the “girlfriend who didn’t exist.”
“People in the sports world have been kind of fascinated by this story,” Chapman Way tells Deadline, in what certainly qualifies as an understatement. “Neither Manti Te’o or Naya, the person behind the scandal, has talked about this really in depth before.”

MTV’s “Catfish” never had an episode with the drama that surrounded former Notre Dame football standout Manti Te’o, the Hawaiian-born linebacker infamously duped into believing his longtime girlfriend, whom he never met in person, died just ahead of the 2013 Bcs National Championship Game. It was a tabloid story that left many wanting the real truth, but it took Chapman and Maclain Way’s Netflix documentary series “Untold” to reveal it.
“It’s obviously been a white whale in the sports world,” Chapman told IndieWire of the Manti episode, “The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist.” The Ways, with directors Ryan Duffy and Tony Vainuku, captured a many-hours-long interview with the former linebacker (and many more hours with his catfisher). “He’s always been a hard ‘No, no, no, no, no, no.'”

Nearly all of the 20 or so staffers of Deadspin who departed the sports and culture website in 2019 during a remarkable mass exodus have reunited to form a new digital company, Defector Media.
Using a subscription format, unlike the advertising-dependent Deadspin, Defector will primarily cover sports but plans to occasionally divert from that based on the inclinations of the editorial team. G/O Media, the private equity-backed firm that took over Deadspin in 2019, inflamed tensions with staffers by insisting that they “stick to sports,” a dictum they decided they could not follow.
Launching with a podcast in August and a website in September, Defector will charge $8 a month or $69 a year for basic access. Each of the 19 staffers in the new operation is a roughly 5% equity holder in the company.
Under the motto “All of Our Bulls–t. None of Theirs,” a splash page posted Tuesday offered a brief mission statement for Defector.

The owners of Deadspin, the sports and culture website that has lain dormant for two months after a remarkable exodus of all editorial staffers, will move its operations to Chicago in a bid to restart the site.
The move will align Deadspin with the Chicago-based Onion, one of the digital properties acquired from Univision by private equity-backed G/O Media last year. The decision, announced Friday, came after G/O broke off talks with Gmg Union, the WGA East local representing workers at the sites formerly owned by Gizmodo Media Group.
