Roman Polanski’s black comedy “The Palace” was given a tepid three-minutes of applause when it world premiered in the Palazzo del Cinema’s Sala Grande on Saturday night.
Producer Luca Barbareschi, French star Fanny Ardant and other key cast members including German actor Oliver Masucci (“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore”), Portugal’s Joaquim de Almeida and Italy’s Fortunato Cerlino (”Gomorrah”) stood up and took a bow, but the audience’s response seemed to be more polite than exited, though there were occasional bursts of laughter during the screening.
Before the film’s premiere “The Palace” set designer Tonino Zera received Venice’s Campari Passion for Film prize from artistic director Alberto Barbera.
Polanski directed the black comedy from a screenplay he wrote alongside Jerzy Skolimowski and Ewa Piaskowska. “The Palace” takes place during New Year’s Eve in 1999, when a dinner party at Switzerland’s Gstaad Palace hotel takes an unexpected turn.

Rourke plays a paralysed man healed by a saint in a trudge through the life of the man who would eventually become canonised as St Nektarios of Aegina
This pious work is clearly designed to send believers into a state of ecstasy, but it may be a bit of a slog for the secular. Essentially, it’s a biopic that takes a trudge through the life highlights of the Greek Orthodox holy man who would eventually become canonised as St Nektarios of Aegina (1846-1920). Russian writer-director Yelena Popovic mercifully eschews all the boring early years stuff and plunges into Nektarios’ story when he is in his 30s; he is played by Greek actor Aris Servatalis, who mainly speaks English throughout.
Already a Metropolitan bishop and living in Egypt, Nektarios gains a reputation among the common people for good works and what will later be considered miracles of healing. This rubs other,...

Rock Films, the production house founded by veteran Russian director Alexey Uchitel, has shared the first teaser for its forthcoming Syrian war drama “Palmyra” with Variety. The company is presenting the film this week during the Key Buyers Event.
“Palmyra” follows a Syrian Explosive Ordnance Disposal (Eod) team targeted by Isis militants, while they prepare the recently liberated historic site of Palmyra to hold a symbolic concert of the Mariinsky Symphony Orchestra. The Eod team clears the way one mile at a time. But the closer they get to the center of Palmyra, the more destructive the explosives become.
The film is currently in post-production and slated for a 2022 release.
“Everybody has heard of the shocking destruction in the Syrian city of Palmyra that was one of the most important cultural centers of the ancient world,” said Uchitel. “It was part of Isis’s ongoing campaign against archaeology. Leaving the city,...

“After two and a half months in lockdown, everybody was happy to be back at work.”
Man Of God was two days out from the start of production when Greece went into lockdown in mid-March, so when restrictions were lifted at the end of May producer Alexandros Potter knew he had to act fast.
“For us we felt the right thing was to start production and get as much done as we could,” said Potter, who runs Simeon Entertainment with the faith-based film’s writer-director Yelena Popovic.
“We’d scheduled the Greek release for November through Feelgood Entertainment,” said Potter.

"Yulya! You're in danger." Dark Sky has released an official Us trailer for a sequel to the epic Russian sci-fi action movie Attraction from a few years back. (Which is actually worth a watch if you haven't caught it yet.) The sequel is titled Attraction 2: Invasion, or just Invasion for short, and continues the story from the first film focusing on a young woman who has gained some sort of powers from interacting with the alien technology. The first film had some awesome VFX shots and some very unique looking alien ships in it. Two years after her alien encounter, Julia is developing superhuman powers that have now made her the target of both the humans and the extraterrestrials. Irina Starshenbaum stars, with Rinal Mukhametov and Alexander Petrov. This trailer is dubbed into English, though the Us release will also include the original Russian version with subtitles. Luc Besson returns to cinema screens with his first, and presumably last, film he will be afforded to make after the colossal financial failure of his predeceasing feature Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, that has plunged his production company into chaos and, has been levelled a string of sexual assault allegations against the famed director whose credits include Leon and The Fifth Element. Besson’s latest, on paper at least, is exactly what he needs to fight against in his dark corner of sexual aggression. Gaining back an audience’s trust while also generating a significant profit margin to secure a future for his production company. However with Anna, his latest, Besson fails on both fronts.

"From now on, I'm your tank leader." Lock & load, it's time for another tank movie! An official trailer has debuted for a new WWII tank movie titled T-34, a Russian movie directed by filmmaker Alexey Sidorov. The story tells of a courageous group of Russian soldiers who manage to escape from German captivity in a half-destroyed legendary T-34 tank. The footage shown in the trailer covers their time in captivity and their escape. Starring Alexander Petrov, Vinzenz Kiefer, Irina Starshenbaum. This trailer is, of course, in Russian but includes English subtitles, in hopes that it might find a big international audience considering it looks like an awesome WWII action thriller. We'll be keeping an eye out for this movie's release worldwide. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Aleksey Sidorov's T-34, direct from YouTube (via Deadline): Short synopsis for T-34: In 1944, a courageous group of Russian soldiers...

MaryAnn’s quick take… It has a spectacular opening sequence, and features a few minor tweaks to alien-invasion tropes. But the teen romance at its center reduces this to a very inconsequential first contact. I’m “biast” (pro): big science fiction geek
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

A few years ago, Fedor Bondarchuk directed the first ever Russian film shot in 3D IMAX, the historical action drama Stalingrad, which was a huge box office hit there. Now he’s back with Attraction, another huge hit in 3D IMAX in Russia last year. The film is not, alas, being released in 3D IMAX in the UK, which is a shame only because the spectacle of its opening sequence might just about make the movie worth paying for, too experience it in such a dramatic format.

It’s no secret that Hollywood seems to think it continues to maintain the monopoly on the Alien invasion genre. Films like War of the Worlds, Independence Day and even Close Encounters of the Third Kind instantly spring to mind. In the latest venture of the sci-fi obsession, the Russians have jumped on the bandwagon. Having created — despite its low-budget margins of its English Language counterparts — a visually spectacular, yet subtly bizarre invasion come love story in Fyodor Bondarchuk’s current offering.

The opening sequence sets the pace as an unidentified object is spotted in the skies over Moscow during a meteor shower. Forced to believe they are under a substantial threat, the Russian Military follows orders to shoot the ship down causing major devastation as the large spiralling craft comes crashing to the earth, cutting through buildings like butter and killing innocent people.

'The alien's exoskeleton was a long job. We made a clip where we found the movements of various animals, insects and snakes and selected the movements we liked' Photo: Art Pictures Fedor Bondarchuk Photo: Denis Ishtokin As part of the first Fipresci colloquium on Russian cinema in St Petersburg, actor-turned-director Fedor Bondarchuk took part in a Q&A about his film Attraction. The Russian blockbuster, which was a box office hit in his home country and opened London's Russian Film Week this month, tells the story of alien Hijken (Rinal Mukhametov) who gets into trouble when his spacecraft is shot down over Moscow. As he tries to recover a vital part of his ship, he enlists the help of teenager Yulya (Irina Starshenbaum), who also happens to be the daughter of a high-ranking army colonel (Oleg Menshikov). As the attraction between the Yulya and Hijken grows, so do the problems...

"It depends on what they do next." Another new trailer has launched for the epic Russian alien arrival sci-fi action movie titled Attraction. We posted three different trailers for this movie all through last year, since it opened in Russia in January of this year. It's just now getting a UK release next January, which is why they've launched their own UK trailer. This is my kind of sci-fi - the VFX are top notch, the concept seems exciting and entertaining, the aliens (and their ship) look cool, I'm really looking forward to this (still). The film stars Oleg Menshikov, Alexander Petrov, Rinal Mukhametov, and Irina Starshenbaum. "The drama unfolds in the ruins of a working-class suburb overwhelmed by the disaster, as the military struggles to control fear, anger, and the eventual clash between Earth and visitors from another galaxy." Take a look. Here's the newest UK trailer (+ UK poster) for Fedor Bondarchuk's Attraction,...

[Editor's Note: This is the first of our coverage of the Edinburgh International Film Festival!]
A slick, big-budget Russian sci-fi film from director Fedor Bondarchuk, Attraction begins with a meteor-shower passing over Moscow which causes an alien spaceship - silently observing the Earth in order to assess our worthiness as candidates for first-contact - to crash-land in the city. As the military swing into action, citizens begin to panic, and we're witness to the aftermath of this historic event.
Attraction is a sort of ensemble-piece, following the lives of high school student Yulya (Irina Starshenbaum), Yulya's boyfriend Artyom (Alexander Petrov) and her father, Colonel Lebedev (Oleg Menshikov), who happens to be in charge of the military operation [Continued ...]...

Exclusive: Stalingrad director Fedor Bondarchuk is enticing distributors with his ambitious IMAX 3D feature Attraction.
Art Picture Studio has announced several eye-catching new deals on the action/sci-fi survival movie, due to be released in Russia early next year, in which aliens descend on Moscow.
Capelight has now come on board to take the German rights, while other major territories that have been closed include Japan (Presidio) and South Korea (Lumix Media).
Steffen Gerlach, co-owner of Capelight, commented about the deal: “We released Hardcore Henry earlier this year theatrically and German fans are really excited about the new wave of Russian action films, so we are really proud to present Attraction, the next Russian sci-fi blockbuster, to the German audience on the big screen in 2017.”
During Cannes in May, Art Picture Studio struck an exclusive deal with Chinese company H.G.С. Entertainment Limited for a simultaneous opening of Attraction in Russia and China on 10,000 screens.

How does this looks so awesome?! Another trailer has debuted for Russian alien arrival movie Attraction, or Prityazhenie, about a giant craft that crash lands in Russia. We featured two original trailers for this a few months ago, and this new trailer has even more footage of the alien creatures and their spacecraft. The film stars Oleg Menshikov, Alexander Petrov, Rinal Mukhametov and Irina Starshenbaum. It's made by the same guy who made Stalingrad and will be presented in IMAX 3D (at least in Russia) when it opens. The action really ramps up near the end, and it actually looks impressive. The VFX are better than most Hollywood movies, and the whole thing has an epic feeling to it. I'm excited to see this! Might be good. Here's the third official trailer (+ poster) for Fedor Bondarchuk's Attraction, found directly on YouTube: You can still watch the first two trailers for Attraction here,...

Whoa! This looks cool. A new teaser trailer has debuted for a Russian alien invasion/arrival movie called Attraction. We've also added the original teaser along with the new trailer, since this is the first time we've encountered this film. There's some awesome footage in this, mainly the original arrival and crash in a city. The ship design is incredibly unique, and I love the way it looks as it crashes down. The film stars Oleg Menshikov, Alexander Petrov, Rinal Mukhametov and Irina Starshenbaum. It's made by the same guy who made Stalingrad and will be presented in IMAX 3D (at least in Russia) when it opens. The newest teaser actually reveals the aliens, which are huge creatures without a discernible face, making me even more intrigued. Along with Guardians, there are some impressive action movies coming out of Russia these days. Here's the first two teaser trailers (+ poster) for Fedor Bondarchuk's Attraction,...
