Harmonix dropped an interesting tidbit of news for Rock Band 4 at E3 last month with the announcement of Rock Band Rivals, the first full-fledged expansion pack for the latest in their iconic rhythm game series. Unfortunately, they didn’t provide details beyond pricing and a revamped guitar controller, with employees later saying they’d ultimately chosen to pull back the curtain after a little more development time.
This is exactly what happened last week, when Harmonix provided me and several others with a presentation in New York City, giving us some hands-on time with Rock Band Rivals. Based on what I saw and played, Rivals looks to give the presentation of the series a real shot in the arm with one of its two new primary modes, and should also increase the game’s longevity with the other one.

Since its inception, Game of Thrones has had deep ties to real-life musicians. Kristian "Hodor" Nairn has a lengthy career as a guitarist and DJ. The Hold Steady's version of the popular-in-Westeros song "The Bear and the Maiden Fair" appears in the Season Four episode "Walk of Punishment." And Alfie Allen, who plays everyone's favorite humbled eunuch Theon Greyjoy, is the brother of pop star Lily Allen.
But the show has gone beyond that, casting actual recording artists as regular cast members or occasional superfan guests for the benefit of eagle-eyed music fans.

Step aside, Narcos: There's a new Netflix kids' show in town! It's called Beat Bugs, and it's an animated show about five best bug-friends who explore the suburban backyard where they live. What's more, the series will feature over 50 covers of Beatles songs by artists such as Eddie Vedder, Sia, Chris Cornell, Pink, the Shins, Of Monsters and Men, Regina Spektor, and many more. Creator Josh Wakely will direct, write, and produce Beat Bugs, which was green-lit by Netflix after securing a deal with Sony/Atv publishing for the worldwide rights to cover songs from John Lennon and Paul McCartney's Northern Songs catalogue, Rolling Stone reports. Judging by Eddie Vedder's cover of "Magical Mystery Tour" in the trailer, it seems like the covers will stay pretty true to the originals. But we suggest they mix things up a little with hits such as "Blackbird (Will Eat You Because...

The last few days of 2015 are spent in reflection about the year that's just wrapping up and in anticipation of the year just ahead, at least for me, and since we had our ten best list last week, this week it's time for the runners-up, the fifteen films that also filled out our year. As always, I look at this list and I think it would make a perfectly spiffy top ten if that's how things had shaken out, which is to say that the only real purpose of any of these lists is to remind you of more of the experiences that were worth having in a theater. There are plenty of good films that aren't on either of my lists this year. That doesn't mean I didn't like them or they're not good. It just means that these films meant more to me for some reason. For now,...

Our favorite Norwegian just dropped a double dose of material today, including a new snippet of an original featuring Ella Henderson. Kygo has continued to be an intrepid tour de force in tropical house, and these new tracks only further affirm the 23 year-old’s status.

The UK singer maintains center stage throughout the clip, supported wonderfully by a more traditionally processed piano. Almost like a duet between the tropicalia of Kygo and Henderson’s resonating lyrics, you can grab this beauty now on iTunes.
In addition to the original track, Kygo’s released a remix of “Dirty Paws” by Of Monsters And Men. His staple keyboard modulation is a brilliant complement to the introspective acoustics on the original’s guitar lead. He’s done well to...

Pixar is still basking in the runaway success of its instant classic Inside Out, a heartfelt and beautifully realized study of human emotion in flux (as well as the most mighty Best Picture contender of 2015 so far), but the animation studio is already looking to the future with a new trailer for this November’s The Good Dinosaur.
Peter Sohn directed the unusual buddy comedy, about a dinosaur named Arlo who leaves home after a traumatic family event and enlists a human boy as his only traveling companion.
The trailer creates a jaw-droppingly beautiful world populated by both dinos and humans, though the good dinosaur himself looks a little out of place when surrounded by such richly detailed natural beauty. Of course, Pixar is one of the most widely respected names in animation out there, so I have a feeling that audiences will be able to adjust to the contrast quite quickly.

The CW kicked off its monster Thursday upfront presentation with an appropriate musical performance from Of Monsters and Men. It was a good thing the network booked the band, because with just three new series, it was a pretty short show otherwise. But it was mighty in its claims and boasts, and network president Mark Pedowitz wouldn’t let anybody forget about the year he just had. With the album and film out in November, ETonline is taking a look back at the artists who contributed to the franchise before and who could be on-board for the next installment.

Lorde is lending her talents to The Hunger Games franchise... again!
The Grammy winner first appeared on the soundtrack for Catching Fire last year singing "Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” but fans can expect her to be even more involved on the Mockingjay - Part 1 companion album. It was announced on Thursday that Lorde will not only write and perform the first single, but she'll curate the whole soundtrack.
That's right, the 17-year-old is on board to hand-pick each and every artist that will appear on the Mockingjay - Part 1 soundtrack after meeting with the filmmakers earlier this year.

Looks like somebody has a case of the Mondays. The cherished children's book "Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst is headed to the big screen, and it looks like it will live up to the title in more ways than one. Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner lead this story that centers on the Brand family, who seem to have it all ... except for Alexander, who can't seem to get anything right. But that all changes one fateful day, when the Brand family find themselves experiencing everything that happens to Alexander on a daily basis and suddenly there are life lessons and Of Monsters And Men songs playing and everyone is bonding. And there is also a "Wreck-It Ralph" reference because ... Disney? That was kinda weird. "Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" opens on October 10th.

Who knew that Ben Stiller, the funnyman behind Zoolander and There’s Something About Mary, was the right man to bring James Thurber’s classic short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty to the big screen? Of course, much of the short story is absent from Stiller’s adaptation, but that was always a certainty (beautiful though it is, the original story is hardly enough to fill a short, let alone a major studio tentpole). What Stiller does manage to do, however, to my great surprise, is capture the adventurous heart of his title character.
Part of what makes Stiller’s characterization so enjoyable is how he nails the mannerisms of the Everyman. Working as a negative assets manager for the fictional Life magazine, Walter is quiet and awkward, more inclined to drift off into daydreams than actually look at what’s in front of him. Without alienating the character from the audience,...

Dracula's paucity of story is holding it back. Here's Laura's review of Servant To Two Masters...
This review contains spoilers.
1.7 Servant To Two Masters
Seeing The Desolation of Smaug over the holidays was very eye-opening. Not only was it made clear to me that this film about greed deconstructs itself at great volume, but it suggested to me that, sometimes, the most important decision a director can make is in deciding just how much story he or she really has, and just how much time is needed to tell that story.
But it didn’t truly gel for me until I watched this week’s Dracula.
When I first started reviewing Dracula, its crawling pace was a minor distraction. The show was obviously envisioned as a Scorsese-like visual banquet. We were supposed to take our time and appreciate the vaguely steampunk aesthetic -...

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is beautiful … and quite forgettable. That's what you get from directors who grew up watching MTV
Aside from flicking over it while staying in generously cabled hotel rooms, I don't think I've ever actually watched MTV. I say this not with pride and not with shame, but as a simple point of fact: it's not a channel I've consciously given time to.
And yet, while the station can't count me in its audience stats, I have, of course, been consuming its products my whole life.
I was born in 1980; MTV was launched the year after. Initially the network was focused on round-the-clock music videos; soon after content became tailored to a more general celebration of "youth". (For good, for bad, the network is credited with popularising the reality TV genre via its commissioning of The Real World in 1992).

Admit it: You're still hung up on "The X Factor" winners Alex and Sierra and how truly great they became over the course of the Fox reality competition's third season. The show might not be the best, but the Florida duo is the best winner to come out of a singing competition show in years.
While they're headed to Los Angeles after the new year to record their debut album -- they won a $1 million Sony recording contract as their prize -- we can't wait that long to listen to them! So until then, Zap2it has compiled videos of their each and every "X Factor" performance to tide you over until you can buy a full disc. (You can buy most of their singles on iTunes now.)
Audition round: "Toxic," Britney Spears
Four Chair Challenge: "You're the One That I Want," John Travolta and Olivia Newton John

A cheery, airy fairy tale filled with a very modern ache and buoyed by an infectious joy. I love this movie. I’m “biast” (pro): like Stiller as a filmmaker; the trailer thrilled me
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
The first thing I had to do after laughing through, weeping over, and reveling in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is grab two amazing songs off the soundtrack to listen to over and over again, to recapture the walking-on-air feeling the movie left me with. Those songs are “Step Out” by Swedish folk-pop singer José González and “Dirty Paws” by indie Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men. Everybody sings in English, and both songs are available on iTunes, and you need them, too, even if you’ve only heard these songs in the trailers for the film,...

Oh, X Factor, always swimming against the tide. The producers didn't take the hint when The Voice wisely pared down to a one-hour performance show this week. So, lucky viewers were treated to three rounds of performances by the top four. Kind of like experiencing your own personal Groundhog Day hell in your living room – especially since it meant Carlito Olivero just wouldn't go away.
Rolling Stone's Complete Coverage of 'The X Factor'
However, there was a silver lining: getting to see Alex and Sierra over and over again.

1.6 Of Monsters And Men
A couple of weeks ago, I talked about the difficulty of writing complex stories with interweaving plotlines: it has to be done really well. Otherwise, you tend to end up with either a tangled mess or a disjointed narrative. This has very much been the case with Dracula: it is successful when it sticks to focusing on one part of the story in an episode, making only brief and occasional nods to other plotlines, but largely fails when it attempts anything more complicated. Yet, they keep trying, and this week’s attempt led to a disjointed narrative.

Dracula Episode 106
“Of Monsters and Men”
Written By: Katie Lovejoy
Directed By: Nick Murphy
Original Airdate: 6 December 2013
In This Episode...
Grayson and Jayne go to the Savoy for dinner, but he doesn’t even sit when he sees Mina, Jonathan, and Lucy at a nearby table. Jayne is embarrassed at being left alone; Lucy and Jonathan are both annoyed that Grayson is flirting with their girl. On the way to the bathroom, Jayne stops Lucy and invites her to tea the next day. Grayson senses Jonathan’s none-too-subtle annoyance and takes his leave, requesting the sommelier “take care” of them. Jonathan and Mina leave the Savoy drunk and giggly, and end up having sex (for the first time) when they get home.
The next day, there is work for both of them: Mina with Van Helsing; Jonathan with Grayson. Grayson has discovered a nickel steel alloy that will solve all...

Dracula has to be the most up and down show on TV. One episode is good, one is bad, and one simply inspires indifference. That’s a shame too because the things that Dracula does do well, it does really well.
The show was never going to be groundbreaking but it is simple, sometimes intriguing, and a lot of sexy fun. Except when it’s not; when it’s not focusing on Grayson (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and Van Helsing’s (Thomas Kretschmann) search for a cure or Grayson and Mina’s (Jessica De Gouw) love, that’s where the problems arise.
Thankfully, “Of Monsters and Men” hones in directly on Grayson’s inability to walk in the light and what the audience gets is great. The episode is...

"Dracula" won't be home for the holidays; instead we have to wait until the new year for a new episode. So in the meantime let's "unearth" last night's Ep. 1.06, "Of Monsters and Men," and take a peek at the promo for January's Ep. 1.07, "Servant to Two Masters."
Per usual, in the "Unearthed" video the cast and creators take us behind the scenes, and below that is a bonus highlight: "Here Comes the Sun," in which Grayson utilizes Van Helsing's experimental sunlight serum to throw suspicious enemies off his path, but the serum's effects are only temporary.
"Dracula" stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Dracula/Alexander Grayson/Vlad Tepes, Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Jonathan Harker, Jessica De Gouw as Mina Murray/Ilona, Thomas Kretschmann as Abraham Van Helsing, Katie McGrath as Lucy Westenra, Nonso Anozie as R.M. Renfield, Victoria Smurfit as Lady Jayne Wetherby, Ben Miles as Mr. Browning, and Robert Bathurst as Lord Thomas Davenport.

A new trailer for Ben Stiller’s upcoming drama The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Stiller plays a daydreaming Life Magazine employee who goes on some real adventures to find an elusive photographer (Sean Penn).
It’s still on my radar as one of the most anticipated movies coming out next month. Now with this new trailer accompanied by the music of Queen, Of Monsters and Men, and Jose Gonzalez while showing off new great visuals, it might be a done deal.
The film also stars Adam Scott, Kristen Wiig, Shirley MacLaine, Kathryn Hahn, Patton Oswalt, and Sean Penn.

Life is Like a Box of Chalk: Stiller Revamps Thurber for Hollow Melancholy
With its soaring visuals and dizzying soundtrack of expertly placed tunes to inspire the melancholy soul, Ben Stiller’s latest film, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, plays like the visual counterpart of a sugar high—a package that initially seems primed to stir emotions but tends to fizzle out without a substantive payoff. Based, in part, on a short story by James Thurber, which also provided the basis for a 1947 musical starring Danny Kaye, Stiller and screenwriter Steven Conrad (who insistently returns to the regular-Joe-breaking-his-mold motif), neglect to instill emotional depth to this adventure about bettering oneself, distracted by its own gloss and terms of endearment, as if Michael Bay were trying to emulate Wes Anderson.

Lorde has premiered her new Tears for Fears cover.
