Chicago – Like the recent movie-to-stage-musical adaptations, “The Producers” and “Young Frankenstein,” Chicago has become the proving ground before a Broadway premiere. The latest is almost a no-brainer, “The First Wives Club,” adapted from the 1996 film that starred Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton.
The big news is that the original song writing team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland (Holland-Dozier-Holland) have reunited to write new music for the show, adding to their familiar hits “Stop in the Name of Love,” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There.” 22 new songs have been added to “The First Wives Club” stage musical, representing the first new output in years from the famous songwriting trio.

So the three-movie idea is more likely down to financial demands than creative ones, and the now-notorious higher frame rate reduces cinematic spectacle to pin-sharp TV movie, but this is terrifically wrought escapism. *full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by producer Paul Tanter. **there are minor spoilers here. Director: Simon Phillips. Writers: James Crow and Simon Phillips. Cast: Nick Nevern, Kellie Shirley, Jenna Harrison, Con O'Neill, Peter Barrett, Roland Manookian, Lorraine Stanley, Mark Harris, Charlie Bond, Steven Berkoff, and Merveille Lukeba. Tagline: "Hooligan first, cop second." GBH is the latest film to come out of the United Kingdom from actor and director Simon Phillips and distributor Revolver Entertainment. The film is set during the London riots of 2011. In this setting, a love story develops between characters Damien (Nick Nevern) and Louise (Kelly Shirley). Violent events split them apart. The film offers an anti-violent message, but that message might be lost amongst all of the chaos occurring onscreen. Overall, GBH is an entertaining film with only a couple film elements hampering the film's full potential. If you did not know.

Paul Tanter's medley of shopworn geezer-drawn-into-crime cliches has a modicum of originality, but it's depressing stuff
Paul Tanter's film adds a tiny twist to a tired old genre epitomised by aggressive and self-pitying "true-crime" geezer operas such as Essex Boys and Rise of the Footsoldier:. A football hooligan gets inducted into some criminal business – in this case, cloning debit cards. All the shopworn cliches are in place; as ever, the movie is based on the semi-reliable memories of an allegedly decent-ish bloke who got out of his depth. Nick Nevern plays Mike, an unemployed guy who meets up with an old mate, Eddie (Simon Phillips), who gets him into a dodgy set-up. Soon, Nick's getting serious cash – which he blows on coke, champagne and brassy blondes – and earning doe-eyed reproachful looks from his tragically nice girlfriend when he staggers home at dawn. Inevitably, the whole thing turns...

Chicago – The astonishing financial success of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” is a testament to the enduring power of spectacle. Sure, Charles Hart and Robert Stilgoe’s pedestrian lyrics may have all the charm of plywood, but audiences couldn’t care less with an unstable chandelier dangling over their heads and a wealth of atmospheric scenery filling their field of vision.
What made “Opera” so memorable wasn’t the lyrics or even the love triangle between the beautiful Christine Daaé, the prissy Raoul and the mysterious Phantom. It was Webber’s melodies, particularly the iconic half-tone chords that open the show (which Roger Waters alleges was plagiarized from his song “Echoes”) that truly linger in audience’s memories. “Phantom” may not be a great show, but it certainly makes for a great night of live theatre.
