John Travolta’s ten-year passion project, titled Gotti, has had a troubled road to production, numerous setbacks from many issues that range from lawsuits brought on – with the infamous casting of Joe Pesci, who was cast and allegedly put on considerable weight for said role, only to be negotiated for a smaller less significant part in the production, leading to a still ongoing lawsuit. The casting of Lindsay Lohan caused a catastrophe with numerous filming days wasted and her eventual firing resulted in further delays. Normally, I don’t bother to cover poorly received films here. It’s easier to focus on the positive, at least outside of the awards race. However, this is a unique situation. The mob film Gotti opened last weekend, to some of 2018’s worst reviews. Well, some of in the sense that only a very small amount of press, notably those who were granted interview opportunities, were screened the movie in advance of its release. That led, in part, to a poor showing at the box office. Then, this week, the producers tried to use social media to spin it, claiming that audiences, the few who saw it, anyway, loved it, while critics were trying to keep you from seeing it. Simply put, that’s fake news, so it’s something I’m going to address today. The movie is a biopic of crime boss John Gotti. The plot synopsis...

John Travolta, trying earnestly to act his way through a ton of lousy makeup and an even heavier slab of bad screenwriting, plays mafioso John Gotti in this chaotic biopic that jumps all over the place but still fails to manifest a pulse. As the Teflon Don tells us upfront: "This life ends one of two ways: Dead, or in jail. I did both." Audiences, sentenced to do time with this corpse of a movie, will know the feeling.
Here's the thing: It didn't have to be such a botch job.

“Grease” is the word once again, as Wednesday was the 40th anniversary of the hit movie’s New York City premiere. To mark the milestone, star John Travolta taught Radio City Music Hall tenant Jimmy Fallon that iconic “You’re the One That I Want” dance from the movie’s grand finale scene.
It was actually Travolta who first introduced the steps to the 1978 film’s choreographer.
“Like in ‘Pulp Fiction,’ I grew up with all these kind of novelty dances,” Travolta said to Fallon. “In ‘Grease,’ they needed a step for that ‘You’re the One That I Want’ at the end. So I said, ‘Well, we used to do the Four Corners — why don’t we do that?'”

There are exactly three interesting choices in “Gotti,” Kevin Connolly’s amateurish biopic about the late and legendary New York mobster, John Gotti..
The first comes at you right off the top: Inverting an exhausted trend, Connolly opens the movie with footage of the actual people in the story, rather than saving it for the closing credits as per usual. It’s a smart move, if only because John Travolta’s performance is hammy enough that we need hard evidence he’s playing a real person (he plays the Teflon Don like a cross between Ray Liotta and Alec Baldwin’s impression of Donald Trump).
The second interesting choice is that some of the music was written by global superstar Pitbull. That’s right, the one and only Mr. Worldwide lends his talents to the film, which helps to explain why his hit 2012 song “Don’t Stop the Party” plays...

After being dropped by distributor Lionsgate just ten days before its set release, the seemingly ill-fated John Travolta-starring John Gotti biopic might get a new lease on life, at least if its producers’ big gamble pays off. A new report from Deadline holds that the film left Lionsgate because of release plan squabbles — it was set to be released by Lionsgate Premiere (which specializes in specialty and limited releases), and its producers were eager to take it to a wide release. The outlet reports that “there was a buy-back clause in the distribution agreement, so the producers exercised it. It was never a matter of Lionsgate dumping the film.”
Still, that’s a hell of a last minute change to make, especially when the film’s release date and plan have been locked for months now. Deadline adds that an outside investor has back the film “so that it...

Looks like this month is about to get a whole lot less merry for one jettisoned project, as the Tracking Board reports that Lionsgate has dropped its John Travolta-starring mob drama “Gotti” just ten days before its scheduled release. A source revealed to the outlet that the film has also been sold back to its producers, Emmett/Furla/Oasis, which produced the film alongside Highland Film Group and Fiore Films.
The film was slated to debut under the Lionsgate Premiere banner next week, but has now been pulled from the release schedule until a new distributor can be found. The outlet adds that the producers will soon start that process, and the film will likely be moved to a 2018 date.

John Travolta stars in Gotti, for which a new trailer has just been released
“Let me tell you, New York City is the greatest city in the world. I was a kid in these streets and I made it the top,” John Travolta says as John Gotti in the trailer for the upcoming biopic Gotti. If anyone could claim “My Way” as a theme song it was the Dapper Don of the Gambino Crime Family.
Gotti “made his bones doing a piece of work for Don Carlo Gambino,” the trailer tells us. From that day on, the Teflon Don was a man on the rise. Gotti has a similar look to Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas. The film will tell Gotti’s story over three decades, but will largely focus on the years after he was made boss by killing the top guy and then assuming his place.

"I will build something that nobody can destroy." Lionsgate has released the first official trailer for a new crime thriller titled Gotti, spanning three decades telling the story of legendary crime boss John Gotti Sr., as played by John Travolta. The story focuses on Gotti's rise to power in New York City, as well as his wife Victoria Gotti, played by Kelly Preston, along with his son John Gotti Jr., played by Spencer Lofranco. The full cast includes Stacy Keach, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Megan Leonard, Lydia Hull, William DeMeo, Tyler Jon Olson, Leo Rossi, and Ella Bleu Travolta. The pitch for this makes it seem like it wants to be the next Godfather, but the footage does not live up to that comparison. Travolta actually looks good in the role, but the rest of it doesn't seem that impressive to me, yet another typical mob crime biopic. Here's the...

Six years and two title changes after the project was announced, John Travolta will finally star as the titular Gambino family Mafioso in “Gotti.” Good Morning America debuted the film’s first trailer on Sept. 26, depicting the allegedly Gotti-ordered hit on his predecessor, Paul Castellano (Donald John Volpenhein), followed by his own demise from “The Teflon Don”—gleaming pompadour, designer suits—to a bald, craggy-faced inmate. Gotti died serving a murder sentence in 2002 at age 61; the cause was throat cancer. One of his sons, John Gotti Jr., helped advise director Kevin Connolly, and even provided Travolta with his father’s jewelry and ties to get into character.

John Travolta takes on the role of crime boss John Gotti in the upcoming film Gotti. It looks like he gives an incredible performance in the movie. It's good to see the actor taking on good projects again. This is probably one of the best movie roles he's taken on in a long time. This looks like it could be a great film and I'll definitely be checking it out.

Hollywood is a whirring machine of marketing, it churns out movies with an expectation of them being hits and an aim of winning awards. I remember watching the first trailer to Unbroken and using the words “Oscar-bait” with its slick trailer and inspirational patriotic story. A predetermined audience demographic shouldn’t be the guiding principle behind creative decision-making, but it’s so hard to get a clear read on the target viewer for At Middleton, a bittersweet adult romance starring Andy Garcia and Vera Farmiga, that this thought keeps returning to one’s mind for the duration of its running time. A bewildering dramedy in which two temperamentally contradictory parents meet while accompanying their teenage children on a college visit, this unusual film alternately charms and frustrates, in nearly equal measure. George Hartman (Garcia) is a buttoned-up heart surgeon accompanying his disinterested son, Conrad (Spencer Lofranco), on a...

Chicago – Since the world has been clamoring for a film about high school seniors touring a liberal arts college, “At Middleton” fills the bill, and throws in a symbolic midlife liaison between characters portrayed by Andy Garcia and Vera Farmiga, tripping across their own “life campus.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
The set-up of the story is better than the result of that set up. Andy Garcia plays against his hunky type as a repressed physician who is desperate to have his son go to Middleton College. Vera Farmiga’s character is more flaky, the motivator to get herself and the good doctor off the beaten path. When they get together, they change each other in odd ways, that doesn’t allow for a natural relationship to develop. It’s as if writer/director Adam Rodgers walked around the college, and made up stuff for his characters to do based on how the campus is laid out,...

Ostensibly based on a true story, Trevor White’s Jamesy Boy recounts the ascension, demise and redemption of James Burns, a cavalier gang member whose story is an all too American one — he fell into a life of crime on the streets of Baltimore as a 14 year old, did some hard time, and was, somewhat astoundingly given then unrepentantly punitive nature of our disenfranchisement factories known as prisons, the better for it. He’s played by a promising newcomer, Spencer LoFranco, who is joined by an accomplished cast including Ving Rhames, Mary-Louise Parker and James Woods, in a somewhat surprising turn, […]...

At Middleton is a modest movie with modest aims, but at times it feels like a small miracle. A daylong romance starring Andy Garcia and Vera Farmiga as two parents who meet cute while their kids tour the same small college, it takes a relatively undistinguished premise and sets itself apart with details that ring true. It’s all fairly predictable enough. Edith (Farmiga) and George (Garcia) meet as they try for the same parking spot on the grounds of the titular, pastoral liberal arts institution; he’s the type who backs into a parking spot, while she’s the type who rolls in without looking to see if anyone else got there first. Their kids, of course, are immediately embarrassed. George’s son Conrad (Spencer Lofranco) is a jockish type who thinks dad’s a total square, and Edith’s daughter Audrey (Taissa Farmiga, Vera’s sister) is an...

One Fine Day: Rodgers’ Debut Features Strong Script, Enjoyable Performances
In a saturated market of mediocrity, a slew of sub-par independent romantic dramedies often force some more attention worthy titles to get lost in the mix, which would be an unfortunate fate for Adam Rodgers’ directorial debut, At Middleton, which has been bouncing around on the festival circuit since a premiere at the Seattle Film Festival last year. While its aim isn’t to be extraordinary or overly ambitious in its intentions, it’s a confidently made, well written and handsomely performed scenario that gets a surprising amount of mileage from overly familiar dramatic tensions.
As the inevitability of their freshmen year at college looms near, a throng of people gather at the bucolic campus of Middleton, a prestigious Ivy League school. The severely anal retentive Audrey (Tessa Farmiga) has been dead set on the school, salivating at the...

Chicago – The actor Andy Garcia has been known throughout the years as a tough-guy leading man, with memorable roles in “The Godfather: Part III” and the “Ocean’s Eleven” series. He latest role is a gentle and comic turn, as a father doing a college tour with his son, and discovering more than expected in “At Middleton.”
Andy Garcia has experienced a brilliant American Dream story. He was born in Cuba, came to America as a child, where his father developed a successful perfume company. He was an athlete in high school, and turned to acting in his senior year. After graduating college, he moved to Los Angeles and began to move up the ladder. After doing “The Godfather: Part III,” Garcia continued with leading man roles in “Internal Affairs,” “Hero” and “When a Man Loves a Woman.” He is taking on more character parts at this point in his career,...

Vera Farmiga and Andy Garcia play strangers who meet while escorting their teen children to campus-tour day at a mythical college named Middleton (the film is in part a hilarious parody of American college life).

Based on a true story, Jamesy Boy is accomplished-enough inspirational fare to attract the likes of Mary-Louise Parker (as a desperate single mom), James Woods (as a hard-nosed warden) and Ving Rhames (as a convicted murderer/mentor) in supporting roles. First-time feature writer-director Trevor White has shaped the rise, fall and redemption of teenage street thug James Burns (newcomer Spencer Lofranco) into parallel storylines, crosscutting between the three years leading up to his incarceration and the few months he spends in maximum-security prison (after four years in juvie)....

Jamesy Boy is an unconvincing portrait of a teen’s fall into a pit of crime and his eventual redemption that comes with time served in the pen, for two reasons. First, a formulaic script from Lane Shadgett and Trevor White puts its delinquent protagonist, James Burns, into a lot of questionable situations that seem engineered to ruin the character and forecast his eventual downfall – although they makes precious little sense. Second, newcomer Spencer Lofranco looks dazed and confused as Burns, although he also looks too squeaky clean and model cute to pass as a tormented teenage thug. Although it is based on a true story (of the film’s co-producer), Jamesy Boy is definitely not a genuine representation of Burns’ troubled past.
Shadgett and White’s script spends a lot of time filling in Burns’ backstory with exposition and the first 10 minutes of Jamesy Boy go through the difficult...

Title: Jamesy Boy Director: Trevor White Starring: Spencer Lofranco, Mary-Louise Parker, James Woods, Ving Rhames, Rosa Salazar, Michael Trotter, Taissa Farmiga, Ben Rosenfield A well-intentioned coming-of-age drama, based on a true story, about a teenage delinquent’s flirtation with more permanent ruination, indie offering “Jamesy Boy” features a grounded, engaging lead performance from newcomer Spencer Lofranco, against an equally solid technical backdrop. Unfortunately, while its redemptive arc offers minor chord catharsis for those predisposed to embrace adapted tales of real salvation, the movie never pushes past a comfortable orbit of earnestness in search of deeper truths. Flashing back and forth between periods before, after and during incarceration, the film tells the story [ Read More ]

In Trevor White's debut feature film "Jamesy Boy," newly imprisoned James Burns finds a mentor in Conrad, a convicted murderer who tries to help the boy get his life together. The film also marks Spencer Lofranco's, who plays James and has recently joined the cast of Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken," first leading role. Last year, he had a small role in "At Middleton," a film starring Vera Farmiga and rising star Taissa Farmiga, who appears with Lofranco in the clip below. In the clips we see the beginnings of a romance between Lofranco, sporting a punkish hairdo and bruised eye, and Farmiga, whose father owns the convenience store in the scene. The two share some awkward glances, loaded laughs and a magic trick -- all very palpable for their blossoming romance. "Jamesy Boy" will be available in theaters Jan. 17 and has already been released on VOD by Phase...

James Burns's story is extraordinary, but it doesn't seem like one that needs to be told.
In Jamesy Boy, director Trevor White frames the former teen gang member's life as an uplifting coming-of-age prison drama that feels entirely disconnected from the realities of incarceration. Worse, White's decision to shackle his film to a redemptive arc ends up making Burns's story an argument for juvenile imprisonment.
Jamesy Boy crisscrosses between Burns (Spencer Lofranco) at age 14, when he was an apple-cheeked thug, and age 18, when the pretty-boy convict is up for parole. James has been intermittently institutionalized for violence since age six, but the film is too timid to show him at his worst. Instead of delving into Burns's underlying psychological issues,...

Mary-Louise Parker's latest film role looks like one emotional performance. In a just-released clip from Parker's upcoming indie crime drama Jamesy Boy, Parker plays the mother of a troubled teen (played by newcomer Spencer Lofranco) who is rejected admission from a public school because of his sordid crime history. "Miss Burns, let me be frank with you. We have some concerns," the admissions officer says to Parker's character as her son sits next to her. "We've read your son's record and we're not convinced that our school is the right place for a student with his particular history." She goes on, "Obviously we're sensitive to the experiences of abuse that...

“We have some concerns,” an admissions officer tells Tracey (Mary-Louise Parker). It's a prelude to the administration's lengthy list of reasons why her son James (Spencer Lofranco) won't be attending high school. In fact, maybe he belongs in a prison. Based on the true story of James Burns, Jamesy Boy is the story of a teenager who drifts from life in a street gang to a maximum-security institution, surrounded by convicts. What James can't find in schools, he discovers in jail. While incarcerated, he bonds with a convicted murderer (Ving Rhames), who becomes a much needed mentor in

Sometimes, it’s nice just to keep things simple. Giant robots and complex ensemble comedies are great popcorn fun but, every once in a while, a gentle, whimsical romcom can feel like a breath of fresh air. And that’s exactly what we get with the trailer for Andy Garcia and Vera Farminga’s latest outing, At Middleton.
The premise for the film is rather straightforward: parents take their teenagers on the college campus tour of Middleton, in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. In conflict with their respective offspring, two of them find themselves ejected from the tour with, consequently, an afternoon to spend together. Romantic comedy ensues.
Directed by Adam Rodgers in his feature length debut, and featuring a script he co-wrote with writing partner Glenn German, At Middleton certainly appears to be anchored by warm, playful performances from the two leads. The always-watchable Andy Garcia (Ocean’s Eleven) plays ‘buttoned up’ heart surgeon George,...

We reported just a few months ago that Vera Farmiga and Andy Garcia were joining forces for the indie dramedy Admissions, and now we’re getting some supporting cast details; Spencer Lofranco, Taissa Farmiga and Nicholas Braun have joined the ensemble. [THR]
The picture follows a man (Garcia) and a woman (Farmiga) who fall in love while they are taking their children on a college admissions tour. Lofranco is set to play Garcia‘s son, while (Taissa) Farmiga will be playing the opposing Farmiga‘s daughter — just as a side note, the pair are actually sisters, with a 21-year age gape. Braun will be playing an “upperclassman who is leading the tour for the prospective incoming freshman class.”
The project was written by Glenn German and Adam Rodgers, who will also be directing. Aside from this project, Lofranco has only been cast in one other movie — a crime thriller titled Jamesy Boy,...

Making the jump from TV (American Horror Story) to film in a strong fashion is Taissa Farmiga, who, according to Variety, will take some of first feature roles with Sofia Coppola‘s Bling Ring and the indie drama Jamesy Boy. The former of those two had its big casting break just some 24 hours ago, when Emma Watson was signed to play the ringmaster of a gang who stole jewelry from various L.A.-based celebrities; Farmiga will appear as a member of this group.
Jamesy Boy is smaller scale and (likely) harder-hitting, being the tale of a young boy, James (Spencer Lofranco), “who goes from suburban street gang to a maximum-security prison, where he’s mentored by a convicted murderer (Ving Rhames).” Farmiga is joining a cast also comprised of James Woods and Mary Louise-Parker, in which she has the part of Lofranco‘s love interest.
