One year ago, it was announced that the Netflix streaming service had renewed the serial killer thriller series You for a fifth season, which will also be the final one. While executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter said that You was always intended to be a “five season journey”, showrunner Sera Gamble decided not to guide the journey to its conclusion. Although she remains attached as an executive producer, she has passed showrunner duties over to fellow executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo. Thankfully, Foley and Lo are no strangers to You. They have been working on the series since season 1 and season 2, respectively. Now You season 5 is gearing up for production, and Deadline reports that Madeline Brewer – whose credits include The Handmaid’s Tale, Orange Is the New Black, and the horror film Cam – has joined the cast.

TV show cancellations are nothing new. Beloved shows have been canceled before fans were ready for them to end for decades. But in a time where streaming services have begun to fully erase their own content in addition to canceling shows before they have a chance to find their footing, the future of the shows we love and our ability to enjoy them feels even more out of our hands than it did before. Cancellation doesn’t just mean that our favorite series is coming to an end, now it means that it could be erased entirely from existence.

While “You” Season 5 won’t be hitting Netflix for a while, Penn Badgley is tiding over fans by teasing that some unresolved business from Joe’s past escapades will return for the final season of the thriller series.
“I’ve heard you’re on the edge of your seats waiting and theorizing about the epic conclusion to ‘You,'” Badgley said in a video that played during Netflix’s Tudum Global Fan Event hosted Saturday from São Paulo, Brazil. “More importantly, you’re considering what, or should I say who, Joe will come up against as he finally returns to New York.”
“Though I can’t say who just yet, we all know there are many loose ends from Joe’s past,” Badgley continued, as the clip flashed to Marienne locked in Joe’s cage in London during his psychotic break in Season 4.

Hello again, “You”!
On Friday, Netflix announced that “You” — its hit thriller starring Penn Badgley as the prolific serial killer Joe Goldberg — has been renewed for a fifth and final season. Season 5 will have a change of showrunners, with executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo taking over for Sera Gamble, who originally developed “You” with Greg Berlanti, and ran the show for its first four seasons.
“As I step back from day-to-day showrunning to focus on new projects, I’m immensely grateful to co-creator and all-around genius Greg Berlanti, Caroline Kepnes, my friends at Berlanti Productions and Alloy Entertainment, and our steadfast partners at Warner Bros and Netflix,” Gamble said in a statement. “Making the show alongside our writers, producers, directors, cast and crew has been an honor and ridiculously fun. And I feel lucky to have worked with an artist as gifted and thoughtful as Penn Badgely.

She casually tosses out, “Hi, Joe,” as the nearly two-minute trailer ends.

In the new trailer for “You” Season 4 Part 2, the question lingers: Will Joe (Penn Badgley) ever find redemption?
He’s been hunted like an animal, ridiculed for his class, nearly framed for murder — and that’s just since arriving in London. Joe wants to change, for real this time (he says that every time), but now he’s in the crosshairs of Rhys (Ed Speleers), an aspiring politician who hates the wealthy even more than Joe does.
Badgley made recent headlines with his comments about wanting fewer sex scenes in the series, out of fidelity to his wife and a desire to not get pigeonholed into romantic or sexually intimate roles. The Part 2 trailer shows him bonding once again with Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), but Joe has been trying to keep his distance in order to protect her.
