Black alert! This article discusses spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Discovery."
There are two undeniable givens in the "Star Trek" universe: all Starfleet captains must accept the inevitability of encountering a no-win situation (aka the Kobayashi Maru test), and you never, ever violate General Order 1, aka the Prime Directive. While both are entrenched parts of franchise lore, the latter has always added a unique moral dilemma that transcends each captain and crew. For the technologically advanced societies that make up the backbone of the United Federation of Planets, there's nothing more detrimental than meddling with the development and evolution of pre-warp civilizations. Despite expectations for officers to treat this directive with the utmost seriousness, however, time and again "Trek" writers have sought to bend and even break the property's most unbreakable rule.
This week, "Star Trek: Discovery" all but jumped at the chance to completely upend established tradition in episode 6, titled "Whistlespeak.

Two young women uneasily living in a religious community in Quebec embark on a secret affair
There’s some soap-operatic gusto to this story of two teenage gay women in a Jehovah’s Witness community in Quebec; it’s got something of Jeanette Winterson’s tenderness, if not exactly the wit, and the movie is interesting and even faintly subversive in its implied analogies concerning conversion and enclosed behaviour systems.
Anwen O’Driscoll brings some Anna Kendrick energy to the role of Jaime, a smart teen whose mum suffers a breakdown after the death of her dad from a heart attack. She has been sent away to live with her aunt Beth (Liane Balaban), who with her husband Jean-François (Antoine Yared), is a devout Jehovah’s Witness and expects Jaime to obey their rules and show up to their religious services wearing the very uncool Handmaid’s-Tale dress they’ve picked out for her.

As long as religion is so preoccupied with queerness, queer artists must reckon with religion. While the closeted zealot trope may be played out at this point, it seems every sect wants its shot at the clandestine queer romance. Of course, there is plenty of Sapphic fun to be mined from the queering of rituals, sacrifice, and self-flagellation, as with the sensual tension of recent entries like “Disobedience” or the outrageous heresy of “Benedetta.” More somber entries into the sub-genre include 2018’s conversion therapy duo of “Boy Erased” and “The Miseducation of Cameron Post.”
Amidst such a crowded field, the Jehovah’s Witness drama “You Can Live Forever” doesn’t quite stand out, short of opening a door into one of the lesser explored religious sects. Though the well-crafted film makes use of a unique regional setting for some moving moments, its straightforward approach to well-worn territory offers few surprises.

"Thank you for choosing us to be your witnesses." Have a look at the official trailer for this indie LGBTQ drama from Canada titled You Can Live Forever, which originally premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival last year. When lesbian teen Jaime is sent to live in a Jehovah's Witness community, she falls hard for a devout Witness girl and the two embark on an intense affair with consequences that will reshape the rest of their lives. When their attraction becomes too obvious to hide, the community moves to separate the two, forcing them each to make a terrible choice between faith and love. The film stars Anwen O'Driscoll & June Laporte as Jaime & Marike, Liane Balaban, Deragh Campbell, Tim Campbell, Antoine Yared, and Hasani Freeman. I just hope this film is properly critical of religion, because it doesn't help to hide the truth about how destructive & deadly these institutions often are towards freedom of expression.

You Can Live Forever
The story of two teenage girls from different backgrounds who fall in love and have to make some difficult decisions as a result, You Can Live Forever is one of the most thoughtful films focused on young people to be screening at this year’s Outfest Los Angeles. It stars Anwen O’Driscoll as Jaime, who goes to stay with her aunt following a family crisis and has to adjust to life within a Jehovah’s Witness community – though one which treats her with kindness and is never pushy about trying to convert her. There she meets Marike, played by June Laporte, and the feelings which develop between them force the Jehovah’s witness girl to struggle with the irreconcilability of her sexuality and her faith.
The film was written and directed by Mark Slutsky and Sarah Watts, and I connected with them early on in the festival to ask them how.

Religions, as institutions, don't often make space for new ideas or changingn times. This includes LGBTQ+ people whose existence is essentially prohibited in the most literal and unimaginative readings of biblical texts. While there are more religious communities these days that are open and accepting, merging faith with a celebration differences, that is sadly not the general case. You Can Live Forever is set within the world of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, where scripture is quoted often and two women being together isn’t a concept that would ever be considered.

High school is often an angsty, unpredictable time, but even more so under the pressure of a strict religious community. Perhaps it’s easier if you’re born into it, but for outsider Jamie (Anwen O’Driscoll), at the center of “You Can Live Forever,” the claustrophobic nature of her aunt and uncle’s Jehovah’s Witness community is almost too much to bear.
It all feels so alienating and strange until she meets Marike (June Laporte), who promises to show her the Truth.
“You Can Live Forever” is the debut film of writer-directors Mark Slutsky and Sarah Watts, the latter of whom grew up gay in a Jehovah’s Witness community in Canada. Though the film is not autobiographical, it touches on much of the discomfort, repression and ultimate hope felt by those struggling with their feelings under a repressive religious atmosphere.

The entire Andreas family has one brain cell, and only Pearl gets a turn with it.
Pearl was the rockstar of V.C. Andrews' Hidden Jewel, and Jennifer Laporte is the crown gem of Lifetime's V.C. Andrews sagas. To refresh your memory, Laporte swooped in and closed the chapter of the Casteel series during V.C. Andrews' Web of Dreams and excelled too.
Jennifer Laporte is a closer and damned good at it.
She spins gold with the ludicrous plots and craziness, and she keeps you engaged. Inquiring minds want to know if Laporte and Banno need icepacks after carrying this film on their backs like this.
Hidden Jewel eased us up to the early 80s, and the clothes reflected it. It also leaned into the supernatural, mysticism, and mystery that the series abandoned after Ruby, and it played out like a variation of The CW's Nancy Drew right down to the pretty people.

Sitting in the living room on their first night in their new home, Malik (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman) is talking to step-daughter Kayla (Jennifer Laporte) about men. She's at an age where hearing about others' mistakes might help her to avoid her own. Men are mostly pretty awful really, he says, except for her dad - and Aaron (Ari Cohen) smiles contentedly. They've been together for a long time now; things feel easy between them. But has their relationship ever really faced much stress?
Life out here in the small town by the lake is supposed to be simpler and easier - better for Kayla, whom they both worry about in the city where it feels like anything could happen. A brief opening scene which echoes that of David Fincher's Zodiac hints at an underlying trauma in Malik's past. But is this new place safe? Malik quickly picks up on homophobic and.

We have the new trailer for Spiral, which will be making its premiere on Shudder later this month:
"Malik and Aaron move to a small town in search of a better environment for them and their 16-year-old daughter. But nothing is as it seems as something sinister lies behind the picturesque homes and welcoming faces of their new neighbors.
A horror film for the current age, Spiral skillfully dissects themes of ostracization, otherness, and the cycles of societal rejection and hate, led by a breakout performance by Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman.
With Ty Wood and Chandra West. Written by Colin Minihan (writer of the Shudder Original Z and the upcoming new Urban Legend) and John Poliquin (Selfie), directed by Kurtis David Harder.

Director Kurtis David Harder, producer of Harpoon and What Keeps You Alive, has crafted a film whose title, Spiral, is symbolic of the endless cycle of hate that plagues the world and America in particular.
Set in 1995, the film follows same-sex interracial couple Malik (Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman) and Aaron (Ari Cohen) who, along with Aaron’s teenage daughter Kayla (Jennifer Laporte), are moving out of the big city and into a small town; however, Malik is haunted by trauma in his past, as the film opens with a flashback of Malik seeing his ex-boyfriend’s murder. It’s 1995 and a same-sex couple move to a small town so they can enjoy a better quality of life and raise their 16 year-old daughter with the best social values. But nothing is as it seems in their picturesque neighbourhood. And when Malik sees the folks next door throwing a very strange party, something very shocking has got to give.
Billed by many as the gay equivalent of Get Out, I found Spiral to be more of an interesting look into the pressure of being minority – both sexually and racially – and the toll being “different” can have on mental health than That film. For that’s what, for the most part Spiral presents us with: a man, broken by a hate crime of the past, trying...

It's the end of the road.
The V.C. Andrews Casteel Family drama comes to a close with Web of Dreams, the final installment of the series.
The latest addition took us back to the beginning to meet the woman at the heart of the VanVoreen Casteel Tatterton Stonewall family tree of snarled limbs and dark leaves.
It was actually good. After our exclusive interview with Jennifer Laporte, it seemed as though Web of Dreams would have a different tone from the others.
Finally, we met and followed Leigh VanVoreen Casteel's journey from a young daddy's girl with her whole life ahead of her to a young woman who beat odds and met a bittersweet end.
Related: Jennifer Laporte On Her Role as The Casteel Series' Leigh VanVoreen on Web of Dreams!
It's what we were waiting for after Heaven and Annie got too sidetracked to delve into Leigh's history.

The Casteel Series from V.C. Andrews comes to an end on Saturday, August 24.
If you've been following along, you know that in all four movies that preceded Web of Dreams airing this Saturday, was the presence of Leigh VanVoreen, Heaven's mother, and grandmother to Annie.
We had a chance to catch up with Jennifer Laporte, who brings Leigh to life in Web of Dreams. She's read the books and watched the movies, so you don't want to miss this conversation with the young woman who plays the girl that started it all.
So What was your knowledge of V.C. Andrews and the Casteel family dramas before you got involved with Web of Dreams?
My knowledge of V.C. Andrews was just a little limited to Flowers in the Attic, of course. I think that's the novel and film that most people are most aware of when it comes to V.

Exclusive: Lifetime has begun production on four new movies based on V.C. Andrews’ Casteel Family book series, all for premiere on the cable network this year. They are among 75 films planned on the network for 2019 as part of an ambitious slate.
Last summer, under new A+E Networks CEO Paul Buccieri, Lifetime made a change in its programming strategy, putting emphasis back on original movies and using them as backdoor pilots over traditional series development.
Lifetime announced last year it was developing five films based on Andrews’ last known book series, about the twisted relationships of the Casteel Family. The first, Heaven, was filmed last year, and you can watch the first-look trailer above. The remaining four are Dark Angel, Fallen Hearts, Gates of Paradise and Web of Dreams. The movie event series follows Heaven Casteel and her siblings after their father devises a scheme that threatens to destroy their...

Horror film come bizarre love story, Clinger follows high schooler Fern Petersen whose possessive high school boyfriend dies in a gruesome accident on the same night she breaks up with him. As if that wasn’t enough turmoil, things go from bad to worse when he returns as a love-sick ghost, initially intent on wooing her once more. But the course of true love never runs smoothly, especially when you’re a headless ghost, which leaves Robert with no choice but to kill Fern so the two can be together… for eternity!
Romantic comedies about unrequited love are hard to get right. Romantic horror comedies are even harder to get right.

While the Sundance Film Festival is the better known film festival located in Utah that runs in January, it is not the only one, as the Slamdance Film Festival has been running in the same place during the same month for over 20 years. The unique aspect of the Slamdance Film Festival, however, is its Narrative Features and Documentary Features program, which restricts its selection to films that are directorial debuts, made for under $1 million, and don’t have Us distribution. The 2015 incarnation of the festival is set to run from January 23rd to the 29th, and ahead of the festival’s premiere next month, organisers have unveiled the lineup for the aforementioned categories. The lineup is as follows.

The Sundance Film Festival dominates Park City in late January, but there is also the upstart Slamdance Film Festival. We’ve not really highlighted that fest or its program, but I always stay at Treasure Mountain Inn where Slamdance is headquartered and they’ve kind of grown on me. Last year they brought Christopher Nolan to speak (the fest had the good sense to program his first film) and Joe Mangianello came to vamp his male stripper docu. This year, there’s every chance of seeing Dennis Rodman, the flamboyant former rebounding machine and Bff of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, for the docu Dennis Rodman’s Big Bang In Pyongyang. So let’s all root for an international incident! Here are the films they’ll be playing from January 23-29:
