Throughout most of Orange is the New Black, fans have wondered how a sweet, old nun could be in prison. Episode 11 shows Sister Jane Ingalls (Beth Fowler) from her first days as a nun. When she first began her life as a nun, she attended a protest against war with two other new nuns. One of the women lied to Sister Ingalls and told her that they got permission to go to the protest, but the nuns end up in trouble. After her first taste of protest, Sister gets too involved with other protests because she loves the fame she receives. After protesting often to get notoriety, and writing a book, called “Nun Shall Pass,” Sister is called a narcissist and is excommunicated from the Church.
