Buenos Aires (Argentina), July 30 (Ians) Uruguayan veteran striker Edinson Cavani has joined Boca Juniors on a free transfer, the Argentine club said.
The 36-year-old agreed to a deal that runs until December 2024 after his contract with Spain’s Valencia was terminated 12 months early, Xinhua reported.
“We’re happy to have you home,” Boca said in a social media post alongside an image of the center forward on Saturday night.
Cavani scored just seven goals in 28 appearances for Valencia last season following his move from Manchester United last August. His career has also included spells with Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli, Palermo and Danubio. He has been capped 136 times for Uruguay’s national team, scoring 58 goals.
Cavani could make his debut for the Buenos Aires giants in a home Copa Libertadores match against the Uruguayan side Nacional on August 9.

Madrid (Spain), April 20 (Ians) Matchday 30 in Spain sees some vital head-to-head duels in the fight to avoid relegation in La Liga and one huge game in the race for the title.
Although Fc Barcelona hold an 11-point lead at the top of the table that looks unassailable with just nine games left to play, Xavi Hernandez’s side has disappointed in recent weeks.
Last weekend’s 0-0 draw in Getafe marked Barca’s third consecutive game without scoring a goal, and they are clearly missing Pedri, Dembele, De Jong, and Andreas Christensen.
Atletico Madrid’s visit to Camp Nou should be Barcelona’s toughest test between now and the end of the campaign, with Atletico travelling on the back of a run of 10 wins from 12 matches that have all but confirmed they will finish at least third.

Paris, April 16 (Ians) Kylian Mbappe has become Paris Saint-Germain’s sole all-time top scorer in Ligue 1, scoring his 139th league goal in a 3-1 win over Rc Lens.
The French international, who netted his 139th goal in his 169th league match since joining Paris in 2017, is now one ahead of his former teammate Edinson Cavani, who scored 138 times in 200 league games between 2013 and 2020.
Mbappe barely seemed to move out of third gear on Saturday yet still had a hand in two of Psg’s three goals. The recently named France captain now has 20 goals for the campaign, putting him one clear of Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette and Losc Lille’s Jonathan David at the top of the Ligue 1 scoring charts of the season.
In the course of a spectacular match, Psg confirmed their status as league leader by beating second-placed Rc Lens on Saturday.

Bilbao (Spain), Jan 19 (Ians) Athletic Club Bilbao continued their good form in the Copa del Rey knockout competition by qualifying for the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win at home to Espanyol.
The win on Wednesday night means the team from the Basque Region have now reached the last eight of the tournament for four consecutive seasons.
Oscar de Marcos scored the only goal of the game in the 26th minute after the full-back ran onto a smart backheel from midfielder Oihan Sancet, who had been fed by an intelligent pass from the impressive Oier Zarraga.
Athletic completely dominated the first half, which was played almost entirely in the Espanyol half, with the visitors sitting deep with a five-man defense.
The second half saw visiting coach Diego Martinez make an attacking change, bringing on winger Aleix Vidal, but although Espanyol looked to push forward more, Athletic continued to control the majority of the ball.

On Monday, in the last match of the day at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, Portugal’s second successive win took them to six points and to the top of the Group H standings leaving Uruguay, Ghana and South Korea to fight for the second qualification spot from the group.
Portugal joins Brazil and France, the other two teams which have made it to the knockout stage so far.
Portugal started well on the ball, enjoying the lion’s share of possession but Uruguay fashioned the best chance. Rodrigo Bentancur worked his way brilliantly through Portugal’s defence but squandering the game’s best chance in the 33rd minute, firing straight at Diogo Costa from a one-on-one situation.

Doha (Qatar), Nov 28 (Ians) The Group H clash between Portugal and Uruguay promises to be the headline act on Day 9 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Monday. Here are four things to look out for:
1. Serbia changes against Cameroon
Serbia manager Dragan Stojkovic hinted at major changes to his starting lineup after a 2-0 loss to Brazil in their tournament opener on Thursday.
Dusan Vlahovic, who has been recovering from a groin problem, could start after making a 30-minute cameo against the South American giants while Filip Kostic is also expected to be available after having missed the first game with a thigh injury.
Cameroon, who are seeking their first victory at the World Cup since 2002, are hoping to rebound from a 1-0 loss to Switzerland in their opening encounter. Manager Rigobert Song will be wanting more from Bayern Munich forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who struggled against the Swiss.

Doha (Qatar), Nov 28 (Ians) Portugal coach Fernando Santos confirmed central defender Danilo Pereira will miss Monday’s FIFA World Cup Group H game against Uruguay after suffering a rib injury in training.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender is not the only injury concern for Santos, with attacking midfielder Otavio and left-back Nuno Mendes both question marks for Monday.
“As far as I know he (Pereira) is improving and we expect to have him back on the pitch very soon,” said Santos, adding that his squad had enough depth to overcome Pereira’s absence.
“We have three other centre halves who can replace him. We don’t need to make a drama of it,” he insisted, dropping a hint that 39-year-old Pepe could be the man to get the nod.
The match is a repeat of the 2018 FIFA World Cup last-16 tie, where Uruguay won 2-1 to send Portugal out of the tournament.

Doha (Qatar), Nov 27 (Ians) Monday is likely to see a battle of youth against experience as Portugal and Uruguay go head-to-head in a difficult Group H, with Portugal looking for revenge for the 2-0 defeat to Uruguay that knocked them out of the last-16 in Russia four years ago.

Doha, Nov 16 (Ians) With the 2022 FIFA World Cup approaching, the participating teams are all fine-tuning their preparations for the quadrennial gala.
The star-studded Portugal led by Cristiano Ronaldo are the favourites in Group H, but it is by no means a one-horse race, as Uruguay, South Korea and Ghana will all have what it takes to make the competition wide open.
Portugal enter the scene on November 24 by taking on Ghana, then meet Uruguay before their final group game with South Korea.
In 2018, Portugal crashed out in the round of 16 after a 2-1 defeat to Uruguay. And in Brazil in 2014, Portugal suffered a group stage exit despite a 2-1 victory over Ghana. Pushing the timeline backwards further, South Korea enjoyed a shock win over Portugal en route to their history-making success in 2002.

Madrid, Oct 24 (Ians) Fc Barcelona remain three points behind Real Madrid at the top of La Liga after a 4-0 win at home to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night.
One of Barca’s best performances of the season coincided with Bilbao’s worst as Barca led 3-0 at the break thanks to Ousmane Dembele’s 12th-minute header, followed by Sergi Roberto’s 18th-minute shot, which took a slight deflection to lift it over Athletic keeper Unai Simon.
Robert Lewandowski added a third in the 22nd minute and Bilbao weren’t helped by Ander Herrera limping off injured, reports Xinhua.
Herrera’s replacement Dani Garcia also had to go off injured in what was a relatively tepid second half which saw Ferran Torres score Barca’s fourth following a pass from Dembele.
Atletico Madrid moved third after a 2-1 win away to Real Betis thanks to two goals from Antoine Griezmann.

London, Feb 8 (Ians) Manchester City have taken a huge step towards the Premier League title with their recent 4-1 win away to Liverpool -- a triumph that owed a large amount to their impressive finishing and two bad errors from Liverpool keeper, Alisson Becker, who gifted their second and third goals with dreadful passes from the back.

Montevideo, Jan 5 (Ians) The Uruguayan players union has urged English football's governing body to repeal Edinson Cavani's three-game ban for alleged racism.
The 33-year-old Manchester City forward was handed the penalty last week after using the term "negrito" to address a friend on social media on November 29, reports Xinhua news agency.
A statement released by the Uruguayan players' union on Monday called on the Football Association to overturn the suspension "to reinstate (Cavani's) good name and honor".
"Firstly, we must condemn the arbitrary conduct of the English Football Association. Far from condemning racism, the English Football Association has itself committed a discriminatory act against the culture and way of life of the

"The sanction shows the English Football Association's biased, dogmatic and ethnocentric vision that only allows a subjective interpretation to be made from its particular and excluding conclusion, however flawed it may be."

Cavani will miss Friday's Premier League game against Aston Villa, the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City and the Fa Cup third-round tie against Watford. All matches are to be played at Old Trafford.
Cavani had used the word "negrito" to thank a follower who congratulated the striker for his performance in United's 3-2 win in the league over Southampton on November 29. Cavani had scored the winning goal in stoppage time.
"A comment posted on the Manchester United Fc striker's Instagram page was insulting, abusive, improper and brought the game into disrepute contrary to Fa Rule E3.1. The post also constitutes an 'aggravated breach', which is defined in Fa Rule E3.2, as it included reference, whether express or implied,...

France and Uruguay both scored major upsets in their last 16 matches this weekend. Les Bleus knocked out Argentina — and star player Lionel Messi — in a stunning 4-3 win on Saturday with two stellar goals in particular from 19-year-old Kylian Mbappe.

Then, just as Argentine fans were licking their wounds, Uruguay knocked Portugal and in so doing, Cristiano Ronaldo, out of the World Cup in their match immediately after. Thanks to Edinson Cavani’s two goals, Uruguay decisively won 2-1. Thursday’s match between Uruguay and France will see the tensions rise as they head into the quarter-final round.
Uruguay will play France at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium in Nizhny Novgorod on Friday, July 6 at 10 a.m. Et, airing on Fox Sports 1. The match can be streamed on FoxSports.com and the Fox Sports Go apps.

FIFA 16 is nearly upon us. It’s almost time to gather your comrades, order a huge pizza and form that perfectly symmetrical sofa-groove that is to be your home for at least 24 hours. (Obviously, additional snacks and props are to be encouraged: gaming hats, chicken wings, football jerseys, cushioned runway for knee-slide celebrations; you know the drill…)
Now, it’s important that all FIFA players know what they’re dealing with as they ease themselves into the 2016 surroundings and it doesn’t get anymore important than finding out who the best finishers are going to be. Some of these guys will be your friends and some will be your enemies, there will be highs and of course there will be lows.
Radamel Falcao, Diego Costa, Edinson Cavani and Gonzalo Higuain – all who were the 2014/15 top ten list – haven’t made it into this year...

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Christian Benteke from Aston Villa, according to Metro.
Louis van Gaal is still on the lookout for a first class striker and the Red Devils were linked with Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani earlier this week as they look to replace Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao.
Reports now claim that they have now agreed to pay out the Aston Villa frontman’s release clause which stands at £32.5 million.
The 24-year-old ended last season in fine form and re-established himself under the guidance of Tim Sherwood as one of the Premier League’s most deadly strikers.
Liverpool and Chelsea had also been monitoring the player who scored 15 goals in 33 games during the 2014/15 season.
Despite the reports Tim Sherwood expects his striker to stay at Villa Park.

Much of the talk this summer has been about how much of a loss Luis Suarez will be to Liverpool, following his £75m move to Barcelona, and who on earth Brendan Rodgers can possibly bring in to replace him.
Established world-class talents like Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani continue to be mooted, but is there already someone at the club ready and waiting to fill the void left by last season’s Footballer of the Year?
In Raheem Sterling, the Reds have an extraordinary young talent, and someone who could makes the fans forget all about Suarez. Of course, it would be ludicrous to say Sterling is even close to the unbelievable level the 27-year-old Uruguayan has been at over the last 12 months – it could be argued that only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are better in world football currently- but his potential is staggering.

World Cup Schedule Day 8:
Colombia v Ivory Coast - 5pm on BBC One
England v Uruguay - 8pm on ITV
Japan v Greece - 10.35pm on BBC One
Match of the Day: England v Uruguay
England might have given one of their best major tournament performances in years against Italy, but they still didn't get any points out of it. That means today's game against Uruguay is essentially all-or-nothing for Roy Hodgson's men.
They could still squeeze through with a draw (and even a loss, mathematically), but if they want their fate in their own hands, they'll need victory this evening.
Uruguay were disappointing in their opener against Costa Rica and Luis Suarez is clearly not 100% fit, but if England's standards drop slightly, the South American team have the potential to cause an upset and end England's World Cup party early.

As usual, when there is a transfer window looming, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club are at the centre of countless rumours surrounding players potentially leaving and signing for the club. Last summer, along with the sale of Gareth Bale and numerous other first-teamers came the signings of no less than seven new players. Paulinho, Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli, Vlad Chiriches, Etienne Capoue, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela were all brought in for a total of around £100 million and, after a season of disappointment for most of them, more changes are expected.
Furthermore, the recent appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs’ new manager has heightened the rumours that the Lilywhites are set to spend more money, given that the Argentinian former Southampton and Espanyol boss will no doubt want to stamp his own mark on the club.
Understandably, a number of his former Southampton players...
