The Jeonju International Film Festival, South Korea’s second most important generalist film festival, on Tuesday announced “The Major Tones” and “Time to Be Strong” as the Grand Prix winners of its two competition sections. The festival continues until Friday.
Directed by Argentina’s Ingrid Pokropek, “The Major Tones” is a mystery film about a youngster with a metal plate in her arm which begins to receive peculiar messages in Morse Code. It premiered at the Mar del Plata festival and also played in Berlin’s Generation KPlus section. In Jeonju it won the international section.

Frankly Speaking is a South Korean comedy-drama series directed by Jang Ji-yeon from a screenplay by Choi Kyung-sun. The Jtbc drama series is streaming on Netflix and it follows the story of Song Ki-baek, a news anchor trying his hardest to appear serious and honorable by lying about his life but an accident leaves him compelled to say everything that comes to his mind.
The comedy-drama series certainly has that charm that most K-drama fans love and it seems like it will also have a romantic storyline, which is another thing that is beloved by the fans. So, if you are going to tune in for Frankly Speaking, we are here for all the information you will need to keep watching the series.

Kim Hee-Ae is back with an expensive wardrobe and a powerful performance on Netflix’s “Queenmaker.” For the most part, her character is rather meek compared to the one in “The World Of The Married,” but we’re only two episodes in, so much more is yet to happen. Alongside her, we have Moon So-Ri, Seo Yi-Sook, Yoon Ji-Hye, Kim Sae-Byuk, and Ryu Soo-Young in pivotal roles. We wouldn’t go so far as to call “Queenmaker” a “Makjang” drama just yet, but we can wait a little bit to confirm this. The K-drama takes time to set its pace and might get a bit slow in places. Let’s find out if there’s a payoff.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens In ‘Queenmaker’ Episodes 1 & 2?
The first two episodes of “Queenmaker” are setting Hwang Do-Hee up to find her place against the massive Eunsung group. Hwang Do-Hee is like a loyal...

Queenmaker is a new Korean Netflix series directed by Jin Suk Oh and starring Kim Hee-ae, Luna So-ri and Su-yeong ryu.
Queenmaker is a curious Korean series with a very, very special protagonist played by Kim Hee-ae. A mix of comedy and drama quite, quite interesting and, above all, with a different flavor.
A series that makes the “bad guys” (supposedly) a little more human (just a little).
Plot
An excellent image consultant does the impossible: she cleans up the image of the meanest and cruelest bosses in town. After suffering an accident, she faces her greatest challenge: to make a woman lawyer becomes the mayor.
Is it really possible to give a lawyer a good image?
About the series
A fun and entertaining series that, at least, has a different plot, and that is appreciated among a grid of repetitive series and hackneyed plots.

Damned SummerL.A.’s cinematic landscape finally feels boundless with the addition of Locarno in Los Angeles, now in their second year. For its second edition, beginning Thursday at the Downtown Independent, the festival—curated by Acropolis Cinema founder Jordan Cronk and co-artistic director Robert Koehler—is focusing on award-winning films from Switzerland’s 70th Locarno Festival. The program includes opening night selection Ilian Metev’s 3/4 (Filmmakers of the Present Golden Leopard), Nelson Carlo De Los Santos Arias’ Cocote (Signs of Life Award), and Wang Bing’s Mrs. Fang (International Competition Golden Leopard). Locarno in L.A. includes 14 nonfiction and narrative films and 5 shorts, including this year’s centerpiece film, Ben Russell’s Good Luck. Shot on 16mm film, the documentary follows two mining communities: one, a government-owned copper mine in Bor, Serbia, operating 400m underground where dank darkness pervades. At the other, in the Brokopondo district of Suriname, laborers...

While the title suggests a beginning and the story likewise introduces the possibility of one, The First Lap is actually about a relationship that’s gone through nearly all of its “firsts.” Ji-young (Sae-byeok Kim) and Su-hyeon (Hyun-chul Cho) have been a couple for six years. He teaches at an art school and she works at a tech company. They’re middle class, she originally from the “upper” and he from the “lower” ends of that scale, but that doesn’t matter much to either of them nearly as much as it does their parents. The pair are settled, the film nestling in with them in the comfortable aimlessness of being childless 30-somethings together.
The “childless” and hence the “aimless” parts of their existence are threatened when Ji-young observes that her period is late. But the specter of parenthood does not disrupt their dynamic the way it might in a more conventional drama.
