Exclusive: Wnyc Studios, the audio company behind series including Radiolab and Dolly Parton’s America, is looking to move into the world of film and TV after signing with UTA.
The agency will work with the company to bolster its strategic partnerships and take its IP to market, including for TV and film.
Wnyc Studios was one of the earliest adopters of podcasting and is also behind series such as On the Media, Death, Sex & Money, The New Yorker Radio Hour, and The United States of Anxiety.
Dolly Parton’s America, which is hosted by Jad Abumrad and reported by Shima Oliaee, was a breakout hit that asked the question – in this intensely divided moment, why can everyone agree that Dolly Parton is one of America’s great icons.

Marcel Proust knew that “the past is hidden in some material object which we do not suspect.” In his novel Tomorrow In The Battle Think On Me, Javier Marías writes about the moment when we die and the transformation of our most precious belongings into trash, when “everything that had meaning and history loses it in a single moment and my belongings lie there inert, suddenly incapable of revealing their past and their origins; and someone will make a pile of them.”
Vincent Liota with Anne-Katrin Titze on the narrative mystery: “We see these things and at the beginning they’re meaningless objects and by the end they’re filled with meaning.

As far as anyone knows, Dolly Parton is mortal just like the rest of us, despite her seemingly boundless musical creativity and industrious hustle. Unlike most of the rest of us, however, she actually has a plan to preserve her musical legacy for all the generations yet to come.
In the final episode of Wnyc’s hit podcast Dolly Parton’s America, co-producer Jad Abumrad catches Parton in a spiritual, reflective mood and poses questions to her about faith, the afterlife, and planning for the eventual end.

Some musical icons make for fascinating subjects because they manage to stay elusive and mysterious. Others are compelling because they’re ubiquitous in building a career that spans so many different kind of audience members. If there’s one entertainer from the last half-century that embodies that second group, it’s Dolly Parton. But as the Wnyc Studios and Osm Audio podcast “Dolly Parton’s America” has shown, there’s more of her experience in that first column than you might expect.
It’s a perfect premise for a show that considers the legacy of Dolly Parton. For a very long time, producer Shima Oliaee could really only talk about it with one other person.

Gay conversion therapy survivors describe how participants were told to change their behavior in “UnErased: The History of Conversion Therapy in America,” an upcoming podcast series co-created by the filmmakers behind the upcoming film “Boy Erased,” starring Nicole Kidman and Lucas Hedges.

In a four-part podcast series, “UnErased” tells the various stories of survivors and those who have long criticized such therapy.
