Last year was a standout year for animation, and 2024 is already shaping up to be another banger. While a majority of the high-profile animation releases are due out later this summer, the first quarter of 2024 has already been promising. Admittedly, this list is going to look mighty small for the time being, but it will be updated throughout the year as more films become available. As we noted last year, animation is one of the only mediums where global cinema is given an equal footing to studio-produced films in America, with the artistic visuals serving as a universal language that we can all enjoy. Today, it has been officially confirmed that the popular manga My Deer Friend Nokotan by Oshioshio, which has been published since 2019, is going to get an anime adaptation and the release date of the first episode has already been confirmed – the series will premiere on July 7, 2024 on Tokyo Mx and other networks.
Oshioshio’s hit comedy / slice-of-life manga series has been published by Kodansha since 2019, and as of the time of writing, four collected volumes have been published. It is not that common for a manga series to receive an anime adaptation so quickly these days, but My Deer Friend Nokotan seems to be an exception, which suggests that the series is doing fairly well and that the series wants to capitalize on that success.
Wit Studios is producing the series, and some key staff members have also been confirmed. We, thus, know that Masahiko Oota (Onipan!, Didn’t I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!...

We’ve got a brand new trailer to share with you for Netflix’s upcoming Ultraman anime series! The series is an adaptation of the manga by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shiguchi, which serves as a sequel to the original 1966 Ultraman series. I love that this is going to be a continuation of the original story, and it looks like it’s going to be great! I also dig the the animation style and design work.
Here’s the synopsis that was released for the series:
“Several years have passed since the events of Ultraman, with the legendary “Giant of Light” now a memory, as it is believed he returned home after fighting the many giant aliens that invaded the Earth. Shin Hayata’s son Shinjiro seems to possess a strange ability, and it is this ability, along with his father’s revelation that he was Ultraman, that leads Shinjiro...

Away from Hollywood’s stifling commercial limits, Fumiyo Kouno’s manga about a young bride in wartime Japan has no illusions regarding the human price of war. Young Suzu takes in a new family, endures the hardships of a militarized country and wartime privations, but nobody is ready for what’s coming.
