Just last year, many experts believed an AI model capable of generating complete, high-fidelity songs from text prompts wouldn’t arrive anytime soon, but now, an arms race is on between competing music-making models that do just that. Suno‘s v3 model, released to the public just weeks ago, was a remarkable breakthrough, particularly in realistic, human-sounding vocals — and today, a formidable new competitor arrives via the just-launched startup Udio. The two companies’ output seems closely comparable, though some early users have suggested that on average, Udio’s output may sound crisper than Suno’s,...

The story everyone knows about the rise of the Mp3 and the end of the CD gold rush is a good one. It’s got Metallica and Dr. Dre, Sean Parker and the RIAA, Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, and the record industry’s flabbergasting decision to sue its own fans. But the real story, or arguably the most nuanced and fascinating one, lies elsewhere with a bunch of young computer wizzes scattered across the country and a handful of crafty, underpaid factory workers in Shelby, North Carolina.

In November, Casandra “Cassie” Ventura filed a federal lawsuit against Sean “Diddy” Combs in New York federal court. Her lawsuit includes graphic claims of sexual assault, physical abuse, and an allegation that Combs, her ex-boyfriend, would force her to have sex with male sex workers while he watched. Ventura’s claims are among the worst, but not the first controversy that the music mogul and entrepreneur has been alleged to be involved in.

In 1999, the walls started closing in on Sean “Puffy” Combs. Two years prior, his friend and Bad Boy Records superstar, the Notorious B.I.G., was gunned down in California. Kerry Washington’s latest film “American Son” hits close to home for the star, giving her reason to reflect on the way she moves through the world as a black woman.
“I worry when I’m driving. I worry when my 80-year-old father is driving,” Washington told Variety at the Toronto Film Festival Studio presented by AT&T, addressing the film’s themes of racial profiling, police brutality and the tensions around the two in today’s world.
“We actually took a road trip recently as a family and I was in one car, my dad was driving another car. And he was like, ‘Oh I have to go back and get my ID,’ because the thought of him getting caught in car without the proper ID terrifies him at 80-years-old,” she recalled.”

Earlier this month, “Omae Wa Mou,” a cheerful instrumental built around an obscure sample of Japanese bossa nova, reached Number One on the Spotify viral chart thanks to a meme that spawned a TikTok dance craze.
But Deadman 死人, the 18-year-old producer behind the track, was barely able to celebrate: The day he topped the chart, he received a notice for copyright infringement from his distributor, RouteNote. “Omae Wa Mou” was pulled from Spotify shortly afterwards.
In a quick turnaround, the instrumental returned to the top of the viral chart 10 days later.

He stirred the pot while speaking at the 2014 Cannes Lions Festival this week after his remarks about famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, and now it looks like Kanye West is backtracking on his negative comments.
On Tuesday, the 37-year-old rapper said that the Vogue photographer “pulled out of” his wedding with Kim Kardashian the day before the ceremony. As a result, Kanye was forced to retouch the couple’s first kiss photo for four days after the Italian event before posting it to Instagram.
After West’s comments caused a ruckus, Annie and Kanye released a joint statement, which read:
Kanye West's comments about Annie Leibovitz while speaking at the 2014 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival have been taken out of context and sensationalized.
Although Kanye expressed frustration that he was not able to collaborate with Annie Leibovitz at his recent wedding, he is not assigning blame, and is not accusing Annie in any way.

VH1 has marked a February 2014 premiere for its latest “rock doc,” although it’s rap and not rock music that’s at the center of this 4-part documentary. The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop, based on Steve Stoute’s bestseller The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created A Culture That Rewrote The Rules Of The New Economy, takes a trip down memory lane to examine how hip-hop culture influenced music, film, television, fashion, business, race relations and the politics that opened the door for Obama’s America. “Tanning” in this case is a phrase coined by Stoute for the deep-rooted influence traditionally African-American hip-hop has had on pop culture from The Jeffersons to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, to Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing to Eminem’s 8 Mile. Billy Corben (Cocaine Cowboys, 30 for 30‘s Broke and The U) directed the docu with Alfred Spellman producing,...
