The worst thing that could possibly happen to a Doctor Who fan is for the show to be cancelled again. Or for it to be broadcast again. Depends who you ask, really.
Despite the advent of the 15th Doctor and the anticipation that brings, there are nagging doubts abroad concerning the show’s future. And that’s fair enough, really. Some fans are just naturally pessimistic, some remember previous crushed hopes around Doctor Who’s wilderness years, and some just look at the state of TV streaming and feel that pessimism is a fairly realistic outlook. It’s also not unreasonable to be concerned that David Tennant is kicking around somewhere, especially given that it was raised by the host during Gatwa’s recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show.
Then there are the folk who simply don’t like Russell T Davies’ writing on Doctor Who. A previous line...

Doctor Who Series 13 Episode 4 Review
Warning: This Doctor Who review contains spoilers.
Remember Class? Nobody would blame you if you didn’t, as Coal Hill Sixth Form’s finest failed to make much of a splash when the show originally landed. If you did stick with it to the end, though, the final episode revealed that the mysterious School Governors at Susan’s old stomping ground were, in reality, Weeping Angels. Creator Patrick Ness was intending to script an angelic “civil war” if a second series had gotten the go-ahead, which indicates just how tempting a prospect the Angels can be to a writer – every showrunner wants a chance to tackle the Lonely Assassins.
This is trickier than it sounds. As early as their second appearance in ‘The Time of Angels’, Steven Moffat was already having to rewrite the rulebook for his beloved baddies, trying to counter all the ways...

On the surface, from its pure and simple, monster-in-the-woods logline, Slapface might sound like another Blair Witch, Slender Man-esque urban legend chiller waiting to happen. Lots of creeping, twig-snapping tension, mysterious whispers in the forest, and a plethora of halloween mask-lead visuals that you might assume will eventually play out like any other cheap Blumhouse clone. It’s a solemn surprise then that the reality is anything but.
Slapface, after all, isn’t the monster, but a highly sinister game, played by two recently-orphaned brothers, struggling to make ends-meet, now on their own in a secluded house on the margins of society. The older Tom (Mike Manning), has turned to drinking to feed his grief, while the much younger Lucas (Girl Meets World’s August Maturo), struggles with loneliness, spending his days wandering the woods, trying (and failing) to escape local bullies.
The only way the boys can connect it seems,...

It looks like the tide is turning on “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.” Despite being criticized by Twitter for being too long, Fox is interested in giving audiences more adventures on the high seas.
Initially reported via Deadline, it seems the newly minted 20th Century Studios is working on a prequel to the 2003 seafaring film. Screenwriter Patrick Ness, who scribed the 2016 family drama “A Monster Calls” will tackle the screenplay. There are currently no stars or a director attached.
Directed by Peter Weir, the original feature starred Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany as members of a ship in pursuit of a French vessel during the Napoleonic wars.
At the beginning of the pandemic last year the film saw an unintentional resurgence via Twitter when one user wrote, “Lots of folk complaining about lack of sleep during the Pandemic. May I recommend ‘Master and Commander’ starring the usually captivating,...

“The courage to do the impossible lies in the hearts of men” was the tagline for 2003’s “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” and clearly, some studio exec has taken that notion to heart. 20th Century Studios is looking to restart a big on-the-high-seas action pic and potential franchise. Deadline reports that the studio has assigned “A Monster Calls” screenwriter Patrick Ness to tackle a new “Master & Commander” film.

Moviegoers will soon find out what happened when Captain Jack Aubrey met Dr. Stephen Maturin.
20th Century has tapped screenwriter Patrick Ness to cook up another “Master and Commander” film, one that will likely draw on the first book in Patrick O’Brian’s beloved Aubrey–Maturin series.
Those novels inspired the 2003 epic “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” which nabbed 10 Oscar nominations and a boatload of great reviews when it opened in theaters. Peter Weir directed the film, which starred Russell Crowe as Aubrey and Paul Bettany as Maturin, but those roles will presumably be recast as both actors are a little long in the tooth to play young seamen — all “The Irishman” de-aging CGI in the world probably couldn’t pull off that miracle.

Two of the country’s major theatrical venues announced reopening plans today, with the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. set to house Broadway productions beginning in November and October, respectively.
In Los Angeles, the Ahmanson’s 2021-22 season will start later than previously announced – instead of an August opening with Daniel Fish’s Tony Award-winning reimagining of Oklahoma!, the venue will now reopen on Nov. 30 with the Jack Thorne-Matthew Warchus staging of A Christmas Carol. (Oklahoma! is now scheduled for September 2022).
Other productions planned for the Ahmanson’s upcoming season are Hadestown, The Lehman Trilogy, and The Prom, among others.
In D.C., the Kennedy Center announced that its new season will kick off on Oct. 13 with Hadestown in the Opera House, followed in December by Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations. At the Center’s Einsenhower Theater,...

Patrick Ness’ 2008 science fiction young adult novel The Knife of Never Letting Go was published the same year as Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, but while the latter launched a dystopian YA franchise, Ness’ Chaos Walking series seemed to attract more of a cult following despite tackling similar early-2000s issues through a speculative lens. While Collins struck an arrow through the heart of reality television, Ness turned his attention to information overload, manifesting it as the Noise: an ever-present broadcast of one’s most private, cringeworthy, hateful, earnest thoughts for all to hear—but only for men.
On the “New World,” an alien planet only recently colonized by humans, the all-male settlement of Prentisstown has ascribed varyingly demanding interpretations of masculinity and morality to their members’ handling of the Noise. Todd Hewitt, the community’s sole boy, must come of age when he faces something even more chaotic than...

Chaos Walking has been a long time coming. Bolstered by beloved source material and the promise of inspired direction by Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman, the film seemed to have everything it needed to be a worthwhile adaptation. Unfortunately, it’s almost everything but.
Chaos Walking is stodgy, self-important, and sporadically Biblical, toothless YA adaptation that mindlessly chews at ideas it doesn’t develop. It’s a frustrating reinforcement of its genre’s worst habits, with little redeeming it beyond brief glimpses of inspired storytelling. Based on Patrick Ness’s 2008 book The Knife of Never Letting Go, Liman’s insipid translation lacks the narrative boldness and broader appeal of its source material.

Photo: 'Chaos Walking'/Lionsgate ‘Chaos Walking’ follows a traditional Hollywood structure and in theory, should be a really good movie. The dense setups show how ambitious the film is to expand into something much more than just one film, but the vague payoffs and lack of character development limit audience’s interest in even wanting more. Based upon the best-selling novel ‘The Knife of Never Letting Go’ by Patrick Ness, a co-writer of the screenplay along with Christopher Ford, this movie tries to take the long books to the screen with a Cinematic evolvement. There are many great qualities of this film, such as the ravishing visual effects, picturesque set design, and captivating and transfixing cinematography. As expected, the directing and performances are impeccable, it’s the excessively fast-paced rhythm of the story, forced messages, and several unfulfilled details throughout that leave the film ultimately disorganized. Cinemas should have scored a significant boost last weekend, with two major releases in the way of Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon and Roadshow’s Chaos Walking. Yet exhibitors report softer starts for both titles than they hoped for.
Directed by Carlos López Estrada and Don Hall, Raya topped the box office earning $1.5 million from 379 screens.
That’s a reasonable result for the Covid-era, but an animated Disney title would typically expect to open on much more. By way of comparison, Universal’s Croods: A New Age opened on $6.5 million across the Boxing Day weekend – that’s during Covid.
In the US, where New York’s cinemas recently reopened, Raya debuted theatrically on a similarly disappointing $US8.6 million.
It’s hard to know how much Raya‘s box office was impacted by the film’s simultaneously global release on Disney+; in Australia it’s priced at $34.99.

“And if my thought-dreams could be seen,” a wise man named Bob Dylan once said, “they’d probably put my head in a guillotine.” Chaos Walking, an adaptation of Patrick Ness’s young-adult trilogy about a planet where one’s private hopes and fears become public audiovisual transmissions, cribs the sentiment from that Dylan couplet — though, to be fair, it does not chop off a single person’s head. Characters are shot, beaten, tortured, drowned, chased, burned, pushed into an abyss, scratched, and shamed, but no gets the falling blade.

It was more than three and a half years ago when cameras began rolling on Chaos Walking, the sci-fi adventure movie starring Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home) and Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker). It’s finally seeing the light of day this week. Although production wrapped in late 2017, this film ended up destined to run the same gauntlet that most movies helmed by director Doug Liman do: reshoots, re-edits and rethinking, all in service of cobbling together something that its studio, Lionsgate this time, could call “releasable.”
In the end, however, the behind-the-scenes story of the making of Chaos Walking is probably far more interesting than what was produced. Based on a novel called The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness (the first in a trilogy), Chaos Walking is a bland, inert, and deadly dull affair that fails to translate its central concept to the screen.

For a sci-fi dystopian thriller about dark secrets and not being able to conceal your inner-most thoughts—and hide, you know, secrets— Lionsgate’s “Chaos Walking” is extremely uninspired and even unimaginative. Based on the first novel in the “Chaos Walking” series, “The Knife of Never Letting Go,” by Patrick Ness, the film’s setting is the future, and a planet that humans have colonized because Earth’s environment is no longer sustainable.

Doug Liman’s foray into science fiction has given us inexplicable lows like Jumper, and impressive heights such as Edge of Tomorrow. Chaos Walking finds an intriguing middle ground. A concept ripe for imaginative exploration, a stacked cast, and incredible set pieces don’t quite compensate for a lack of depth that would otherwise make the experience wholly satisfying.
Chaos begins on an unknown planet inhabited by an all-male colony. Their thoughts are an unfiltered “Noise,” wherein anything you think can be heard––if not controlled. This gives way to The Mayor (Mads Mikkelsen), who is in charge of the colony and dressed like a vintage Eastwood character, setting up an intriguing mix of the old west and dystopian aesthetics. We also understand The Mayor is the best at controlling his Noise because we never hear what he thinks––unlike Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland), who has no control of his thoughts.

Director Doug Liman spun an exceedingly high-concept science-fiction premise into narrative gold with “Edge of Tomorrow,” but in “Chaos Walking,” the concept is all there is.
There’s no shortage of imaginative sci-fi details or of talented actors on-hand, but the film boils down to characters we barely get to know chasing each other and yelling. That it hardly matters who’s being chased or what, exactly, is being yelled — mostly “Stop her!” and “Aaauuuggghhh!” — is just part of the trouble here.
Patrick Ness and Christopher Ford adapt Ness’ novel “The Knife of Never Letting Go,” about future human colonists living on a planet where human thoughts can be seen and heard by others. It’s a phenomenon known as “Noise,” and noise of every kind is definitely the dominant motif of the screen version.

Lionsgate’s YA sci-fi adventure Chaos Walking will be released in theaters nationwide and in IMAX on March 5, 2021, a push-back from the previous Jan. 22 date. The move comes as distributors begin to adjust the Q1 calendar in response to the ongoing pandemic, which they are hoping quells by spring given the good news about the vaccine.
The $100M Tom Holland-Daisy Ridley feature has been delayed numerous times, one of its big delays due to $15M reshoots in mid-2018. However, Ridley’s schedule on the Star Wars movies and Holland’s Spider-Man and Avengers pushed those reshoots. In May 2019 it was reported that Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez was helping out with those reshoots in Atlanta while Liman remained on board. The feature was originally dated to open on March 1, 2019.

In the first trailer for “Chaos Walking,” Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley live in a dystopian world where a force called The Noise allows all living creatures to hear everyone else’s thoughts and feelings.
Ridley however is the last woman alive in this world, and she may be the source of the mysterious Noise.
Lionsgate is releasing “Chaos Walking,” which is directed by Doug Liman and is based on the trilogy of YA sci-fi novels by author Patrick Ness. And though many labeled the novels as somewhat “unfilmable” because of its unusual premise about information overload flooding the minds of young people, this first trailer shows the ambition on display, with Ridley explaining how strange it is to not just hear but see everything Holland is thinking.

Chaos Walking turned out to be an unexpectedly fitting title for the YA sci-fi movie that’s had a ridiculously long road to the screen. Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley were cast back in 2016, with principal photography occurring in 2017. Poor test screenings in 2018 then forced the cast and crew to reunite for extensive reshoots, which were much delayed due to the leads’ Marvel and Star Wars commitments and finally took place in 2019.

New Republic Pictures has signed Jake Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker’s Nine Stories to a first-look feature film production deal. It’s the second first look New Republic has made in recent weeks, following two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett and her Dirty Films company.
Gyllenhaal and New Republic founder Brian Oliver previously worked together on Universal’s Everest, while New Republic president Bradley Fischer collaborated with the Oscar-nominated actor on Paramount’s Zodiac.
“Brian and I have both gotten to know Jake over the years as a powerhouse actor as well as a passionate storyteller with a sharp eye for cinematic voices that can resonate with audiences everywhere,” said Fischer. Added Oliver: “When we spoke to him and Riva about their plans for Nine Stories, it was instantly clear that we shared more than just the same taste in material but also a belief in taking big swings with visionary talent.

When Gustav Möller broke out a few years ago with his intense, one-location thriller The Guilty, Jake Gyllenhaal counted himself a major fan and quickly became attached to produce and star in an English-language remake of the project. We’ve had no updates since then on the project, but thankfully, the more interesting outcome of that has arrived, as Gyllenhaal will now lead a new film directed by Möller.
The project is a thriller titled Snow Blind, which will be an adaptation of Ollie Master’s graphic novel, scripted by Patrick Ness. Does Luca Guadagnino ever sleep? The Italian filmmaker released back-to-back arthouse favorites “Call Me by Your Name” and “Suspiria” in 2017 and 2018, launched the short film “The Staggering Girl” at Cannes in 2019, and he’s also working on an adaptation of William Golding’s AP English staple, “Lord of the Flies.” That’s not to mention his miniseries “We Are Who We Are” in the works, plus a sequel to “Call Me By Your Name,” and a long-rumored big-screen imagining of Bob Dylan’s iconic breakup album, “Blood on the Tracks.”
