Apple TV Plus set Chris Miller and Phil Lord’s “The Afterparty” for a January 2022 debut and released a teaser for the upcoming murder mystery.
The show is set at a high school reunion, and each of the eight episodes retells the events of the night through a different character’s perspective — and therefore unique visual style.
“This is one of the most surprising, original and fun projects we’ve ever made,” said Lord and Miller. “Our goal was to tell a comedic whodunit story in a new and exciting way. By giving each episode its own unique style of storytelling, we were able to make what feels like eight distinctly different but interconnected films that highlight how everyone’s personal perspective and biases shape how they see the world.”
The show stars Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao, Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer, Jamie Demetriou and Dave Franco.

"Music was still so alive in her." Gravitas Ventures has released the official trailer for a documentary titled Miss Angela, telling the incredible true story of Angela Alvarez. This hasn't premiered at any festivals, but it looks like it's worth a watch anyway. From directors Paul Toogood & Lloyd Stanton (Dying Laughing), their film Miss Angela tells the remarkable story of 91 year old Cuban-American singer-songwriter Angela Alvarez, who's lifetime of songs were nearly lost to the world. An inspiring tale of love, loss, struggle but ultimately triumph, Miss Angela is a story 75 years in the making. Growing up in Cuba, she was forbidden to sing. It wasn't until decades later, after raising a family in the United States, that she finally got a chance to sing on stage, culminating in a concert at the historic Avalon in Hollywood, hosted by Oscar winner Andy Garcia. She is "a stunning example of overcoming adversity,...

Updated with additional info: Andy Garcia has come aboard to narrate Miss Angela, the working title of the feature documentary Angela Alvarez, the 91-year-old who had her lifetime’s work of songs discovered, and recorded her first album. Filmmakers Paul Toogood and Lloyd Stanton interviewed Alvarez and her children about her life and recorded when she performed her music in a debut concert (on her 91st birthday) at Hollywood’s Avalon Theater, an event Garcia both played in the band and hosted.
The film is now in postproduction.
“As a fanatical student of Cuban music it’s easy to recognize when you see someone that’s special, not only musically, but lyrically,” he said. “Angela Alvarez is a real discovery. I’m
honored to be a part of it — to be asked to lend my support.”

Some of stand-up comedy’s most famous faces from both sides of the Atlantic sit down to talk about their profession in Paul Toogood and Lloyd Stanton’s newest documentary feature Dying Laughing. Household names such as Chris Rock, Amy Schumer and even the late great Garry Shandling talk honestly about what makes comedians tick, and offers firsthand anecdotes about “bombing”, being heckled by drunks and “killing” it on stage.
Toogood and Stanton use a talking-heads formate to entice their contributors to tell some of the most harrowing experiences of their careers. Made technically on a shoestring and with more than 50 comics taking part, the film manages to be compelling as well as raise some laughs, but fails to completely convince due to its overcrowded nature.
With whole sections devoted to the relationship between a comic and his or her audience, there are some laugh-out-loud as well as more serious moments.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Presidents' Day weekend was an interesting one at the box office, and as with most holiday weekends, it was particularly difficult to figure out how things might fare, other than The Lego Batman Movie, which remained at #1 with almost $45 million over the four-day weekend. Fifty Shades Darker followed with $21.3 million, about a 50% drop. Last week, I thought that the Ice Cub comedy Fist Fight would beat The Great Wall, although it seemed like it could be a close race. Nope. Matt Damon’s action epic came in third place with $21.6 million, which is a couple million more than my original prediction, but The Fist Fight fell short of my prediction by almost $10 million, grossing $14.5 million in its first four days.

Here's the first trailer and poster for Dying Laughing, a new documentary about the art of stand-up comedy. This is a subject that's been pretty well-covered in the past, but this doc stands out because of the talent it was able to wrangle for interviews: people like Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, and tons more.
The film is making its world premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival this week, and I'm hoping to be able to check it out and have a review here on the site soon. Fingers crossed.
