It'll be interesting to see how the live American public votes shake out on "Duets" - since based on our comments, we think Robin would've lost both of his people awhile ago and Jordan Meredith would surely still be around.
The theme tonight is Songs of the 2000s, which kicks off with a song by the mentors that is from ... 1990. So that makes sense. Also, how do we all feel about Kelly Clarkson's blonde hair? Hmm.
1. Jennifer and John, "When You Say You Love Me," Josh Groban
This makes a better duet than we were expecting, the arrangement is really nice. And this is maybe the first time it has felt like the two of them are not singing at church. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but this one has a different feel to it, which is nice. This just sounds so polished - they could release this as a duet.

Memo to Duets‘ “superstar” mentors: Please stop telling each week’s Bottom 2 contestants that it doesn’t matter if they get booted, that their participation on ABC’s summer reality series is only the beginning of their careers in the music biz. Sure, such soothing talk cushions the blow of elimination (or near-elimination) and it may even be true, but as a viewer, it adds to the low-stakes vibe that’s pervaded this show ever since it tossed the first two weeks of scores into the dumpster (right next to Gcb) and never mentioned ‘em again.

This week's performances on "Duets" brought us straight to the movies -- with one not-so-happy ending for an amateur. Our trustee host, Quddus reminds the viewers that next week, the show goes live. The superstars do their best to get the best five out on the stage for America -- because clearly we know better than four award-winning artists. Let's go to the movie performances!
John Glosson and Jennifer Nettles
"My Heart Will Go On"
"Titanic" was a drama, but Jennifer and John were all laughs while rehearsing for this ballad. Robin had a problem with John's dance moves last week, so John suggests a little baton twirling? He was kidding (thank goodness), but John and Jennifer nailed the song's emotion, even earning another one of Kelly's love/hate comments: "I can't stand you." Robin loved that he "sings from his heart," which led to Jennifer's "Thanks, boo." John thought it was fabulous.

Duets is a little like the lamb chop I had for dinner last night: Perfectly lovely summer weeknight fare, but with tiny morsels that get stuck in your teeth and drive you loopy hours after the meal is over.
Central to the show’s irksomeness is the wretched/”secret” scoring system where the three judges not on stage anonymously enter not one, but two scores for the fourth judge’s amateur partner — is it my imagination, or was the announcement of separate scores for “performance” and “presentation” a new development in the show’s ongoing, haphazard evolution? After that, the...

If you just tuned in to ABC’s Duets for the first time this week, congratulations! Because apparently, those of us who wasted our time on Episodes 1 and 2 were actually watching some sort of meaningless preliminary rounds that won’t have any impact on the competition.
If that’s not the case, then shame on ABC nonetheless. After all, if the judges’ “secret scores” from Rounds 1 and 2 were somehow factored in to this week’s leaderboard, then why not just say so? And if Thursday night’s leaderboard really was a three-week average, we also needed to know: Was it...
