“Going to Hell for God is the logical end for the Catholic devil,” declares Matt Murdock in 2023’s Daredevil #12.
Matt Murdock isn’t the only religious superhero in the Marvel Universe. In addition to fellow Catholic Nightcrawler of the X-Men, there’s the Presbyterian Christian Wolfsbane, Muslim Ms. Marvel, pantheist Black Panther, and Jewish characters like Moon Knight and Kitty Pryde. But Daredevil might be the Marvel superhero whose religion plays the most pronounced role in his stories.
Of course, Daredevil isn’t the first Marvel hero to go to Hell and literally fight the Devil, as Ghost Rider, the X-Men, and anyone who had to deal with Mephisto can attest. But when it’s guilty Catholic Matt Murdock donning his Daredevil duds to deal with the Devil, then it’s a really big deal. Which is exactly why Chip Zdarsky — who wrote Daredevil #12 with artist Marco Checchetto, colorist Matthew Wilson,...

Take a look at new footage supporting the final season of the live-action DC Comics adaptation Black Lightning", premiering February 8, 2021 on The CW:
'Jefferson Pierce', aka 'Black Lightning' debuted in DC Comics' "Black Lightning" #1 (April 1977), created by writer Tony Isabella and illustrator Trevor Von Eeden, as a 'metahuman' born with the ability to generate and magnify externally-localized electro-magnetic phenomena by manipulating intense bio-electric fields generated from his body.
Pierce can easily stun or kill a man with his internal powers and on one occasion, was able to restart the heart of 'Superman', after the 'Man of Steel' had suffered a near-fatal 'Kryptonite' exposure.
Pierce can also generate a powerful electro-magnetic force field capable of stopping projectiles.
He has also has the ability to create an electro-magnetic repulsion field enabling limited-flight capabilities.
Pierce also maintains his Olympic-level physical conditioning, giving him above-average strength, speed, and stamina and under the tutelage of 'Batman',...

Exclusive: Grace Choi is officially here to stay on The CW’s Black Lightning. Chantal Thuy, who plays the shapeshifting metahuman on the Arrowverse superhero drama, has been upped to series regular for season four.
Grace Choi is based on the Black Lightning comic created by Tony Isabella with Trevor von Eeden. Thuy first appeared as a recurring character in the first season and she developed a relationship with Anissa (Nafessa Williams) who is also known as the metahuman Thunder and/or Blackbird. The Grace and Anissa broke ground as an on-screen queer superhero couple of color — and they were about to get married before the War for Freeland interrupted things.
“Chantal Thuy embodies the character of Grace Choi,” said Black Lightning executive producer and showrunner Salim Akil. “I am sure our Black Lightning fans knew, especially those who follow the Grace and Anissa relationship storyline, that having Chantal join...

Black Lightning is getting a spinoff, with the CW developing a backdoor pilot around the Painkiller character.
Painkiller will star Jordan Calloway, reprising his role as the eponymous character. The planted pilot spinoff will air as the seventh episode of Black Lightning’s fourth season, which will premiere in February 2021. Black Lightning showrunner Salim Akil will write, exec produce and direct.
It marks the first pilot based on a DC Comics character for this broadcast development season and is the CW’s latest planted pilot development. Last year, the network planted potential spinoffs of Arrow and The 100.
Calloway plays Khalil Payne, a man ridden with the guilt of his troubled past from his former life in Freeland City, where, as a super-enhanced killing machine known as Painkiller he was both a member of Tobias Whale’s gang and a weapon of Agent Odell and the shadowy Asa.

Batman is easily the most popular DC Comics superhero, and arguably the most popular hero in all of pop culture. He’s been a staple for decades now, responsible for some of the most successful comic books, movies, cartoons and video games of all-time. Naturally, DC has always banked hard on the character’s appeal, and that’s a problem according to Tony Isabella, who created the Black Lighting series for the comics company.
The writer took to Facebook recently to make the following announcement:
Here’s a tip. Don’t ask me to join groups or visit pages that have “Batman” in their titles. He was once my favorite comics hero. Now I consider him one of the most toxic and the ruination of DC Comics. DC hurts their other characters by making Batman the center of their universe.

The CW has moved up the return of “Black Lightning” by two weeks. Now starting on Monday, Oct. 7 at 9/8c, the “Black Lightning” Season 3 premiere will immediately follow the “All American” Season 2 premiere, which the network feels is a better pairing.
The move takes away one of two planned encores for the “Batwoman” series premiere and eliminates an encore of the “Nancy Drew” series premiere. Now that The CW has its own in-season streaming rights, those encores are seen as less vital for catch-up viewing.
Below is The CW’s revised fall premiere dates schedule, as revealed at the broadcast channel’s Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour day.

Marvel Entertainment is teaming up with Dreamscape Media to produce and distribute a few dozen of Marvel’s iconic comic book stories as audiobooks.
This is actually pretty cool, especially for fans who just don’t have the time to find and read some of these comics. Some of the comic books that will get the audiobook treatment include The Ultimate Spider-Man, The Ultimate X-Men, X-Men: Codename Wolverine and Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, “with works coming from author like David Michelinie, Tony Isabella, Len Wein, Marv Wolfman and Peter David.”
On top of the two dozen titles that are being produced, there will be an additional 20 titles that haven’t been widely distributed before. The titles will be made available for sale, and also added to the free library lending app Hoopla, starting in September.
Dreamscape Media publisher Tammy Faxel had this to say in a statement:

So here we are. “Avengers: Endgame” is over, and Thanos has been dealt with and some of the longest-running heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are dead, including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr). You can say that Black Lightning has had a rather tumultuous time when it came to finally finding his place, as it is now, as one of DC’s more prominent heroes on TV and in the comic books. The hero’s creator, Tony Isabella, has been rather candid on telling just how the hero came to be and how difficult it was to bring him into the spotlight where he belongs. As DC’s first prominent black hero he’s definitely had a big impact on the overall universe despite not being among the most powerful or noticed heroes in the past. Black

“In the comic, you’ll notice that Black Lightning is in the hospital, on his deathbed, basically, and he started ruminating about his past in flashbacks in the comic. And so that structure was really what captured me,” Akil tells Variety. “It really did allow me to go back in time with him as a kid and deal with his father’s death and then allow him to actually take the stairway to...

Sneak Peek more new footage, from the "Black Lightning" live-action TV series, adapting the DC Comics' superhero characters:
'Jefferson Pierce', aka 'Black Lighhtning' debuted in DC Comics' "Black Lightning" #1 (April 1977), created by writer Tony Isabella and illustrator Trevor Von Eeden, as a 'metahuman' born with the ability to generate and magnify externally-localized electro-magnetic phenomena by manipulating intense bio-electric fields generated from his body.
He can easily stun or kill a man with his internal powers, and on one occasion, able to restart the heart of 'Superman', after the 'Man of Steel' had suffered from a near-fatal 'Kryptonite' exposure.
He can generate a powerful electro-magnetic force field capable of stopping projectiles, however, this act requires considerable effort and concentration.
He has also demonstrated the ability to create an electro-magnetic repulsion field which grants him limited-flight capabilities.
Pierce also maintains his Olympic-level physical conditioning, giving him above-average strength,...

The CW has already introduced two new dramas, this season, but neither Valor nor Dynasty have done very well in the ratings. It is the littlest network's DC Comics-inspired TV series which usually save the day (along with some heavy lifting by Sam and Dean Winchester, as well as Archie and the gang). Will the Black Lightning TV show fit in well with its super-powered sister series? Can it light up the Nielsens? Will Black Lightning be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. Based on the DC Comics character created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden, Black Lightning stars Cress Williams, Nafessa Williams, China Anne McClain, James Remar, Damon Gupton, Christine Adams, and Marvin Jones III. Last Friday, my pal Larry Hama invited me to a “friends and family” screening of the first two episodes of Marvel’s The Defenders. I mean the new series debuting on Netflix today, not the classic television show, The Defenders, the source of many many jokes made during the screening.
Also in attendance: Tony Isabella, Michael Gaydos and his adorable son, Arvell Jones, and the families of Archie Goodwin and George Tuska. Plus a bunch of current Marvel folks who had probably already seen the whole series, but who were gracious hosts.
Before the screening began, I was feeling pretty warm and fuzzy about seeing so many of my old friends and meeting people whose work I admired. Hence, I was psyched to enjoy two hours in a comfy chair in a screening room.
Mostly, I had a great time. I have a huge crush on Charlie Cox, the beautiful man who plays Matt Murdock.

With so many super heroes invading The CW, it's going to be tough for a new one to come in and stand out from the rest. That is exactly what Black Lightning is going to try and accomplish this when it premieres in 2018. For now the idea is that it will stand alone apart from the rest of the super hero shows (Arrow, The Flash, Legends Of Tomorrow and Supergirl). I personally think that it is only a matter of time before he is included with the other heroes. But this piece isn't focusing on any alliances he could make rather his opponents. Thanks to the trailer and synopsis we know that he will be dealing with a gang that called "The 100".
With that gang playing a key role in the series, it was only a matter of time before their leader was announced as the main antagonist. The International...

This fall The CW may need to consider changing its name to the DC Super Hero Network or something similar with as many super hero shows as it has lined up. Starting with Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl. If that weren't enough, soon they will also launch Black Lightning. As many of us have already seen, they have already released a promo image as well as a trailer for the show. This show as confirmed by the CW President Mark Pedowitz will not be part of the Arrowverse as they are not looking to make a 5 way crossover, not to mention that while the other shows are produced in Vancouver, Black Lightning is produced in Atlanta. But I think that they will be crossed over at some point. Supergirl wasn't supposed to cross over either but that quickly changed as well all remember. So for now with...

As part of The CW’s trailer blowout today, the network offered up the scintillating first trailer for Mara Brock Ali and Salim Ali’s upcoming Black Lightning series.
Lifted from the pages of Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden’s comic book series, Black Lightning tells the story of Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams), a once-iconic costumed crusader who decided to retire from the superhero scene soon after becoming a father. China Anne McClain and Nafessa Williams will play Jefferson’s two daughters, Jennifer and Anissa, while we understand Christine Adams is attached to the part of his estranged wife, Lynn.
Per Deadline, here’s the official logline for Black Lightning: “He made his choice: He hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter, Jennifer, hellbent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back...

Super Producer and writer Greg Berlanti is adding a fifth superhero TV series to the CW next season. The network which already has Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl has ordered a new series based on another DC property, Black Lightning. "Jefferson Pierce made his choice: he hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with one daughter hell-bent on justice and the other a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning.”
Black Lightning is one of DC's first major African-American superheroes, he was created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden in 1977.

For some time now, Black Lightning has seemed destined to be picked up by The CW. The series was first announced as in development last September, and back then, they were looking to get the show over to Fox. Of course, times have changed. Fox passed on the show, and Berlanti and co. have since moved on to familiar pastures over on the CW.
Thus far, Greg Berlanti has a DC superhero show for nearly everyday of the week: Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. Those who have been annoyed that they haven’t yet locked down that Friday slot can now rejoice. According to Deadline, The CW has officially picked up Black Lightning for a full series.

With production on The CW’s Black Lightning now underway in Atlanta, the network has released the first photo of Cress Williams in the lead role.
For those unfamiliar with the character, his real name is Jefferson Pierce and he was one of “DC’s first high profile African-American superheroes – who arrived on the pages of DC comic books in 1977, created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden.” An Olympic athlete, Pierce returns home only to find his neighbourhood terrorized by a gang called The 100. Using his metahuman abilities, which include manipulating bio-electric fields, he fights to save the people he knows and loves.
“I knew way too much about the world as a young boy growing up in Richmond, California. I was no stranger to violence, death, hopelessness or the feeling that no one cared about what was happening in my life,” said executive producer and writer Salim Akil,...

Unfortunately, this puts me in opposition to at least three of my ComicMix fellow travelers – Martha Thomases, Joe Corallo and Adriane Nash. And, probably, many others who occupy these premises. That should make our next staff meeting amusing.
Iron Fist – I’m talking about the Marvel/Netflix series – most certainly is not The Prisoner of 21st Century. It’s not even as good as Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. But from reading the reactions of the aforementioned critics and many others, I do not find it to be the You’re In The Picture of the 21st Century, a show so obscure and godawfullousy that only Bob Ingersoll remembers it.
