What would you do if a monster took your loved ones from you? Some might not like to admit it, but pre-emptive fantasies of retribution have a cathartic quality, giving us a sense that we could take control of the narrative in a dreaded scenario. Perhaps this is why revenge thrillers are so popular. They allow us to vicariously live out such fantasies while also taking a moral standpoint, as most of us know that we would never act upon these dark reveries. It is queasily satisfying watching scumbags and murderers getting their comeuppance, even if a film ultimately comes down on the side of "vigilantism is bad."
Most of us like to think we are good and moral people and we know that taking the law into our own hands is fundamentally wrong. Not all such movies arrive at that conclusion. When "Death Wish" was released in 1974, it was...

On paper, "I Saw The Devil" doesn't break new ground. Intelligence agent Kim Soo-hyun (Lee Byung-hun) sets out for revenge after the murder of his fiancee Jang Joo-yun (Oh San-ha). When he discovers the identity of her murderer, Jang Kyung-chul (Choi Min-Sik), he decides to play cat and mouse to drag out his vengeful catharsis.
All-in-all, a pretty typical setup for a revenge thriller. Such movies are a popular breed in South Korea and "I Saw The Devil" shares many qualities with other high points of the genre. Indeed, Choi Min-Sik previously played a serial killer and object of revenge in Park Chan-Wook's "Lady Vengeance."
Where the film is exceptional is its violence. Director Kim Jee-woon shows both living and dead characters' bodies being destroyed in slow, nauseating detail. The gore would probably make even the aforementioned Mr. Park queasy. It certainly did so to the Korean Media Rating...

One of the most tense and memorable scenes in the South Korean serial killer thriller "I Saw the Devil" is set in a moving taxi. The killer, Jang Joo-yun, played by Choi Min-sik of "Oldboy" fame, is walking along the road at night after being beaten up in his greenhouse by Kim Soo-hyun (Lee Byung-hun), the government agent whose wife he murdered. A taxi comes along and stops for him, and he gets in, but there's already another sketchy guy in the backseat. Alibaba Pictures Group (Apg) has signed a memorandum of understanding (Mou) to invest in Korean action film Real, set to star Kim Soo-hyun.
Apg retains sole distribution rights for the film in China and will leverage its online resources to support the film’s marketing. Set to start filming at the end of the year, Real will be directed Lee Jeong-sub and produced by a special purpose company Real Spc.
