Oh, we had such hopes. Only one person can win “Survivor,” so 95% has to lose, but some lose harder than others. Some players look great on paper but utterly flame out once they start actually playing the game. Others do well for the majority of the season but end up choking in the end. Then there are those who play fantastic games on their first seasons but are not able to replicate that success on future iterations. Above, tour our guide of the most spectacular flameouts in “Survivor” history.
People like Amanda Kimmel and Russell Hantz have done well in multiple seasons, getting to Final Tribal Council not once but twice. But neither was able to convince the jury to vote for them to win in the end, with Amanda in particular seeming like a frontrunner to win only to flounder like a fish out of water in front of the jury.

“Survivor” can be one of the most entertaining shows on television, an adventure on a deserted island where strangers out-maneuver each other and compete in fun challenges. It can also be immensely uncomfortable when the illusion of the game fades away and real-life implications come into play. Above you can scroll through our photos of the 12 most disturbing moments in “Survivor” history, ranked from uncomfortable to ugly.
The safety of the “Survivor” castaways is always of grave importance, which is what makes the show’s medical evacuations so unfortunate to watch. Some, like Michael Skupin in “The Australian Outback,” have an accident, falling in the fire and requiring medical attention. Others push themselves to the brink, like Russell Swan in “Samoa” and Caleb Reynolds in “Kaoh Rong.” These are the worst kinds of “Survivor” exits, and while there can be compelling drama in seeing a castaway push themselves, it’s...

There are a lot of similarities between Survivor and politics. The scheming. The backstabbing. The alliances.
So it's only natural that some contestants have entered the cutthroat world of politics after their seasons were over. Rupert Boneham was the 2012 Libertarian candidate for Indiana governor. In 2001, Mike Skupin considered a run for U.S. Senate. Jolanda Jones, the first contestant voted off of Survivor: Palau was a Houston city councilwoman.
Now another contestant is throwing her hat into the ring: Laura Morett, who competed in Survivor: Samoa and Survivor: Blood vs. Water, has announced that she is running for a seat...

Rather than selecting returning players unilaterally and listening to fans complain about the latest return for Rupert or a confusing return for a castaway even superfans don't remember, "Survivor" has left the decision somewhat up to America to determine the 20 castaways for Season 31. On Wednesday (May 6) at the end of the latest episode of the less-than-lackluster "Survivor: Worlds Apart," CBS formally announced what had long been rumored across the Interwebs. There are 32 candidates up for the "Second Chance" season. As the word "second" implies, this season will only be open to one-time former players who didn't win, so all of your Hantzes and Ruperts are out. Thank God. Instead, this group of 32 includes contestants going back to original "Survivor: Borneo" runner-up Kelly Wigglesworth. And then there are five candidates from the current season, including two who haven't been eliminated yet, which is either an annoying spoiler or not, but I'm...

[Spoiler Alert: Read on only if you have already watched tonight’s episode of Survivor: San Juan del Sur.] Nobody was voted out of Survivor: San Juan del Sur on Wednesday night. That’s because one person went ahead and quit just hours before Tribal Council and saved everyone the trouble (while in the process saving one person in the game for three days). Missing her eliminated boyfriend (John Rocker) and caught by her newly merged tribe hiding trail mix in her bag, Julie decided she’d had enough and summoned host Jeff Probst to her beach to tell him she was done. She also claimed she was doing it because she was about to be voted out anyway,...

"Survivor" isn't a show for quitters and yet many players have quit on "Survivor" over 28 seasons. Players have quit with broken bones, nasty infections, heart problems, stomach problems and whatever those two things were that caused Colton to quit. Jenna quit to be near her ailing mother. Susan quit because Richard Hatch rubbed against her. Various levels of in-game misery caused Janu, Kathy, NaOnka and Purple Kelly to quit. On Wednesday (March 26) night's "Survivor: Cagayan," Lindsey Ogle quit because of her concerns that if she continued to spend time with gloating Bostonian Trish, something bad might happen. Jeff Probst hailed this as a strange sort of "Survivor" first. As a result, the Solana tribe lost Cliff and Lindsey, which Trish and Tony hailed as a huge triumph, even if they were now way down in numbers. Solana subsequently won two straight challenges, which as either a fluke or addition by subtraction.

Survivor Review, Season 27, Episode 3
“Opening Pandora’s Box”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Last season, the Survivor producers made the inexplicable decision to cast Brandon Hantz for a second time. He was clearly unstable during his first appearance, and it was only a matter of time before he exploded. The choice to bring back Colton is different because he controlled the game on One World before exiting. Even so, there are definite similarities. Colton is a nasty player who thrives on making others miserable. That strategy may work with newbies, but he’s found no traction with the returnees. Luckily for him, they’ve been rolling through the immunity challenges. He might coast for a while and find a way to reach the merge. Instead, Colton’s frustration leads to the lamest quit in the show’s history. Players do everything to play and avoid the vote, and...

“Last Push”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Despite the unpredictable second half of Survivor: Caramoan, a sense of inevitability dominates the finale. Cochran has avoided the vote throughout the game, and his victory feels secure after he wins the final immunity challenge. The only question is whether Dawn or Sherri will receive any votes, and the bitter jury makes it clear neither has much chance to crack the scoreboard. While Jeff Probst makes a huge deal about Cochran being unconventional, it’s not a surprise to see him win the million. Along with playing a strategic game, he has the likability factor that’s eluded powerful contestants like Russell Hantz at their Final Tribal Council. The jury needs to feel good about giving the million dollars to the winner, and only one possibility fits that requirement. Dawn received unfair nastiness from fans after Brenda’s exit,...

Weeks of intense competition, alliances, betrayal, and elaborate mind games on Survivor all boiled down to one night, as the twenty-sixth Sole Survivor and $1 million prize winner was announced on Sunday.
After over a month in the Philippines' scenic Caramoan Islands, the competition, which began with ten fans and ten returning players, was reduced to five players: Sherri Biethman, John Cochran, Eddie Fox, Dawn Meehan, and Erik Reichenbach.
Pics: Exclusive: 'Survivor' Challenge
The returning players outnumbered the newcomers by one heading into the series finale, but that margin was soon evened when Erik, who originally appeared on Survivor: Micronesia, was forced to withdraw from the competition for medical reasons.
That left two males and two females remaining in the game. After reacting to the shocking news of Erik's late-competition departure, the final four reflected on the remainder of their sixteen departed fellow contestants.

Phillip Sheppard makes a lot of sense. The former federal agent, who dominated much of the screentime in this "Survivor: Caramoan" season with his Stealth R Us alliance-building, his increasingly heightened conflicts with Brandon Hantz and his ongoing devotion to Boston Rob, was voted out on Wednesday (April 17) night's episode in a Tribal Council shocker. Phillip's certitude has never wavered in his two "Survivor" seasons and it isn't a surprise that he sees Malcolm and the Alphas' big Tribal Council move as a validation of his strategic strength, rather than a condemnation of his "militaristic" dictatorship. The merge is happening on Wednesday’s episode of Survivor: Caramoan — Fans vs. Favorites, and if you don’t believe me, then check out the exclusive merge feast photo above with the fancy green buffs, abundance of fresh food (of course Dawn is handling the bread), and booze (of course Eddie is handling the booze). Also, is it just me, or do Cochran and Andrea look like they’re on a super-awkward first date?

Nobody's ever been cast on "Survivor" to be "vanilla." But sometimes it happens. Not everybody can be a Phillip or a Brandon or a Shamar and in a season that happens to have a Phillip, a Brandon and a Shamar all battling simultaneously for screentime, it's hard for anybody to keep up. It's even hard to keep up if you happen to have the daredevil spirit of a race car driver and the intellect of a Stanford undergrad. Julia Landauer is both of those things, not that you'd know either fact from her time on "Survivor: Caramoan." In fact,...

Each week, host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of ‘Survivor: Caramoan — Fans vs. Favorites’.
Entertainment Weekly: Please say something about Julia since we did not hear her say anything all season long. And what are your thoughts on the flavor vanilla?
Jeff Probst: Julia. Well, in fairness to Julia I think part of the reason you didn’t hear much from her is because she was playing in the shadow of Phillip, Brandon, Shamar, Cochran and others. Julia is a young person and young people often suffer on our show due to limited life experience,...

Production of the French Survivor adaptation Koh-Lanta has been stopped and the series canceled for the 2013 season following the death of a contestant during filming in Cambodia. Channel TF1 and production company Adventure Line Productions (Alp) jointly made the decision to cancel the season. "It is not really a question,” said TF1 spokesperson Alexander Petit following the death. “Everyone is being flown back to France.” No decision has been made about the long-term continuation of the series. The fans just can't catch a break. Even after a tribe shake-up on Wednesday night's Survivor: Caramoan -- Fans vs. Favorites, another fan was voted out at tribal council. Longtime viewer Matt Bischoff -- a 38-year-old from Cincinnati who works in BMX bike sales -- got voted out by the favorites alliance after he was deemed too big a threat because of his close alliance with Michael Snow. Photos: Jeff Probst's 'Survivor' Picture Diary On Thursday, he talked to The Hollywood Reporter about what he wishes he'd done differently and what he really thinks about Brandon Hantz's meltdown and Phillip

Nicki Minaj showed up on time and it was Beatles night on American Idol (3.5/10) on Wednesday. The Top 9 finalists took turns over the two-hour live show with tunes from the Fab Four and a hefty dose of ballads. The night of sad songs saw Idol slip 3% in fast nationals from last week’s 3.6/11, and down 8% from its March 13 finals. If last night is like most Idol live shows, expect to see upward adjustment in the final numbers. The most-watched show of Wednesday night, Idol dipped 3% to 12.7 million viewers from the 13.1 million who tuned in March 13. Fox still won the night in total views and the adults 18-49 demographic. On CBS’ Survivor: Caramoan (2.5/8), the Fan and Favorite tribes were scrambled to add some new juice to the contest. It wasn’t as dramatic as the meltdown Brandon Hantz had last week, though, and the series slipped 7% from the season high of that March 13 show.

Needless to say, last week's shocking turn of events on Survivor: Caramoan — Fans vs. Favorites left the Favorites reeling and needing to regroup after they were forced to forfeit a challenge so they could vote Brandon out. But that wasn't the only thing that shifted the momentum of the game.
Just when the tribes were starting to each feel sweet harmony, they headed to a meeting, during which host Jeff Probst told contestants the teams would be shifting.

Maybe it's Stockholm Syndrome, but I really believe there's an undercurrent of good strategy this season on Survivor. It's been drowned out by larger-than-life characters like Shamar, Brandon and Phillip bellowing their cris-de-coeur up and down the Philippine jungle.
Underneath that clamor, though, smart people are making good decisions. We finally saw a glimmer of it on Wednesday's episode, when Corinne gave us a peek...

After Brandon Hantz' explosive depareture last week on "Survivor: Caramoan," the tribes may have thought things would settle down. But Jeff Probst dropped an early bombshell on them this week. Instead of a reward challenge, they were switching tribes.
While the switch was done randomly -- bursting eggs filled with two colors -- the results appeared anything but random. The new Gota tribe was stacked with young, attractive and physically intimidating players. The new Bikal tribe had misfits like Phillip and Cochran.
Right away, the new dynamics came into play as the next challenge was a grueling and physically demanding task. It wasn't even close. Even worse, the fans found themselves outnumbered four-to-three on both tribes. Unless something dramatic happens, this is a favorites season to win.
Staying true to the "Fans vs. Favorites" subtitle, the favorites united on Bikal and targeted the weakest fan in their midst,...

Survivor: Caramoan Review, Season 26, Episode 6
“Operation Thunder Dome”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
After last week’s meltdown from Brandon, it’s so refreshing to watch everyone return to focusing on the strategic side of the game. Crazy behavior makes for good TV, but Survivor works best when players are scheming to try and gain an edge. Both groups return to camp shell shocked after Brandon’s outburst, but most are ready to move forward. Corinne and Phillip are upset about getting thrown under the bus, yet both should have time to recover. This prospect becomes more likely after the tribal swap, which gives a 4-3 edge to the favorites in each new group. Instead of looking for a way to flip a favorite, the fans are more than willing to turn on each other. This is not a good idea. The new Gota tribe is loaded...

So, after last week's fireworks on "Survivor: Caramoan," will this week's episode be a let down? We shall see.
Bikal
Phillip tells everyone that Brandon was a traitor and that his problem with Phillip was all in Brandon's head. Corinne is also hot under the collar, saying Brandon is crazy along the lines of Mel Gibson, which is kind of hilarious.
You know you've fallen hard as a movie star when you are being cited as a crazy person on a reality TV show. Heeeee.
Phillip also tries to fire up his tribe by talking about how weak and beaten down the Fans look -- as he vows that Corinne is on the chopping block the first opportunity he gets. We aren't sure that's the strongest play, dude. She's a very divisive player -- keeps the heat off you to keep someone like that around. Somebody unassuming and...

Last week on Survivor Caramoan, Brandon's brain exploded. It is much easier to play this game with a working brain, so Brandon had to be voted off. The Favorites are just happy that Brandon didn't do a Jason Voorhees impersonation and send another tribemate off the island in a body bag. "Operation Thunder Dome" isn't as chaotic, but there is still a major shakeup this week.

Kim Spradlin has a lot of great memories from the beach. In 2012, she spent 39 days on a beach in Samoa, outwitting her way to the million-dollar prize on Survivor: One World. And on Saturday, she got an even better prize when she married fiancé Bryan Wolfe on the beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Surrounded by approximately 30 guests, Spradlin exchanged vows in a casual, boho-chic ceremony. "We chose a private beach near our hotel," Spradlin tells People. "It's by a cove. I just wanted it to feel very organic and natural." As owner of Bella Bridesmaid in San Antonio, Spradlin...
