Yesterday, Deadline reported that our friend Isaac Ezban (The Similars and the upcoming Parrallel) will direct the adaptation of Dan Simmons' 1991 novel Summer of Night for Sony Pictures. The book revolves around a series of hauntingly sinister events that threaten a Midwestern town as a group of young teens unearths a centuries-old evil prophecy of biblical proportions. As far as trends go we of the Amblin vintage are happy to see this resurgence in horror films with young casts. Where there is success the gravitational pull on greenlighting projects reaches out to anything remotely related. The article in Deadline alludes to the successes of Stranger Things and It, and we are equally excited about other upcoming projects like Rkss' Summer of 84 which wrapped...

Before he penned sprawling, licentious, violent fantasy epics, George R. R. Martin penned slimmer but equally licentious and violent werewolf stories. The Skin Trade, his celebrated 1989 novella that predates his Song of Ice and Fire series, has now been optioned by HBO's sister channel Cinemax. (No word yet if Cinemax will work The Skin Trade into their Skinemax programming yet, but what a howl that would be.) The novella appears in the short-story anthology Dark Visions, also known as Night Visions 5, which also features stories by Stephen King and Dan Simmons and was later reissued as The Skin Trade after Martin's ascension to genre icon. The noirish novella concerns a private investigator and his friend, a collections agent who also happens to be a werewolf, as they investigate a series of grisly murders. Martin will not be writing or running the show, however, as he has a book to...

Bradley Cooper wants "movie actor" to be one of many business cards he carries in his wallet. In 2014, he showed off that ambition, shepherding "American Sniper" to the big screen as a producer and jumping to Broadway after developing his take on "Elephant Man." Now, as many Renaissance men and women do, he’s looking to direct, with the stars are aligning for his debut. Deadline reports that Cooper is in talks to helm 'Honeymoon With Harry,' a movie he was slated to to star in alongside his "Limitless" costar Robert De Niro. The plan is still to star, pulling double duty on a script by Dan Fogelman ("Crazy Stupid Love"). According to an earlier report from Deadline, "Honeymoon with Harry" is a James L. Brooks-esque drama that Cooper has been eager to push through the pipeline. The story focuses on "a formerly self-centered womanizing booze-hound who changed...

Tuesdays are when new books are typically released, and horror fans usually don’t have too much trouble finding something to read. There is Amazon of course and publishers like Samhain and Cemetery Dance…
We also boast authors ranging from "The King" himself to Dan Simmons, Robert McCammon, the late Thomas Tryon, Tim Curran, Aussies Stephen Irwin, Brett McBean, and Aaron Dries as well as Brits such as David Moody, anthologist Stephen Jones, and Mark Morris, to name just a very few.
But what if you long for the paperback originals which seemed to flood bookstores back in the 80s or want to read even earlier horror that is long out of print? What to do? Well, you turn to Valancourt Books to assuage those yearnings. And we recently spoke with Ryan Cagle, one half of the publishing team that brings those long unavailable titles to life for readers to enjoy again,...

It had taken three days before the supervisor—“call me Marty”—asked Finn for the favour. He knew by the looks on the faces of the other staff—the little upturning of their heads that meant they were listening, but weren’t going to show it—that it wasn’t going to be a good favour.

If Guillermo del Toro knows one thing, it's monsters. The Mexican filmmaker has parlayed a childhood fascination with things that go bump in the night into a series of influential and highly regarded cinematic wonders, from the fairy tale creatures of "Pan's Labyrinth" to the Lovecraftian beasts of "Hellboy."
This week, del Toro unleashes a new pack of monsters on the world in "Pacific Rim." The movie concerns evil Godzilla-like creatures that emerge from the depths of the Pacific Ocean (dubbed "kaiju"), as humanity looks to fight back in the form of gigantic robots (dubbed "jaegers").
We got to talk to del Toro about the design process for the jaegers and kaijus of "Pacific Rim," whether or not this was a "rebound" movie after he left "The Hobbit," and what's going on with his upcoming movies, "Haunted Mansion" and the adaptation for Dan Simmons's "Drood." Oh, we also talk about "Pacific Rim 2.

A search for Scotland’s next generation of talented film-makers has been launched for a second year, with a call for screenplays.
Contemporary Scottish stories are being sought by lo-fi, a low budget film initiative run by Screen Academy Scotland - a Creative Skillset Film & Media Academy at Edinburgh Napier University.
lo-fi Phase 1 will see up to six screenplays developed over an eight month period by up-and coming Scottish talent.
The projects will then be pitched to an industry panel, where one screenplay will be selected for advanced development and financing – lo-fi Phase 2.
Last year, five Scottish film-making teams were selected for lo-fi and now, after three development workshops, the finance panel chose the feature film Rocket Surgery (written by Glaswegian writer Stewart Thomson, to be directed by Luke Snellin) to go forward for financing and intended production.
