Spoiler Alert: This post contains details from Your Monster.
Your Monster takes audiences on a fun, romantic and spooky ride just in time for Halloween, but some viewers might want clarification on the ending.
Writer and director Caroline Lindy, who makes her feature debut with the film that is now playing in theaters, told Deadline that despite the precarious ending, she imagines Laura (Melissa Barrera) and Monster (Tommy Dewey) “riding off into the sunset together.”
Based on Lindy’s 2019 short, the film follows soft-spoken actor Laura Franco, who is dumped by her longtime boyfriend Jacob (Edmund Donovan) while recovering from surgery and retreats to her childhood home. With her future looking bleak, insult is added to injury when Laura discovers her ex is staging a musical that she helped him develop. But out of these gut-wrenching life changes emerges a Monster with whom she finds a connection, encouraging Laura to follow her dreams,...

In 2022, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media revived the Scream franchise with a new entry (the fifth) that was a box office hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office. Fourteen months later, Scream VI came along – and became an even bigger hit, pulling in almost $169 million at the global box office, a number that was up there with the series’ heyday, when the first Scream and Scream 2 made just over $170 million. (Scream 3 also made over $160 million – only Scream 4 failed to crack $100 million.) So, of course, the companies are moving full steam ahead with Scream 7. While the movie seemed, initially, to be on the fast-track to success, the track it’s on has turned out to be a shockingly bumpy ride.

As a wise Wayans once said, "Watching TV shows doesn't create psycho killers — cancelling TV shows does!" So perhaps it's the recent epidemic of streamers swinging the axe that's responsible for today's announcement that the Wayans brothers — Marlon, Keenan Ivory, and Shawn — are returning to their iconic Scary Movie horror parody franchise after 18 years away. Per Deadline's reporting, the brothers are working with Rick Alvarez on a script for the slasher series' sixth instalment — and Marlon Wayans took to Instagram earlier to celebrate the exciting news. Check out his post below:

After sitting out the last movie, Scream icon Neve Campbell was convinced to reprise the role of Sidney Prescott for the upcoming seventh instalment in the long-running slasher franchise - but her decision to return was not without some controversy.
“Sidney Prescott is coming back!” Campbell posted on Instagram when her return was made official. “It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the Scream movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”

Jenna Ortega has officially evolved from a Disney princess to a scream queen. In just a few short years, the Gen Z star has left her mark in horror with successful movies (both in existing franchises and helping to kickstarting a new one), while also helping revitalize Tim Burton's career as his muse in two highly popular titles.
Though Ortega had already appeared in big movies like "Iron Man 3" (in a small role as the Vice President's daughter) and had a recurring role on "Jane the Virgin" a decade ago, it wasn't really until after the pandemic that Ortega broke big, especially in the horror landscape. It helped, of course, that Ortega appeared in four horror films in 2022 alone. She was a protagonist of the "Scream" reboot alongside Melissa Barrera, subverting the franchise's iconic kitchen murder scene by surviving her encounter with Ghostface. Then she appeared in the...

They say that necessity is the mother of invention, and after the dramatic exits of Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, and director Christopher Landon from the Scream franchise in the last year, Kevin Williamson — Og Scream writer and soon-to-be first-time Scream director — has quite some inventing to do with his upcoming Scream 7. And having made a promising start by convincing the slasher series' talisman Neve Campbell to get her Sidney Prescott on once again in the new movie, we're now getting word that Williamson could be set to bring back another familiar face to go toe-to-toe with Ghostface. That familiar face? Patrick Dempsey, aka Detective Mark Kincaid.

Four top films this weekend are indies – five including The Substance at no. 11, as the specialty market roars back to life. No. 3 at the domestic box office is a great story, Conclave from Focus Features, the studio behind the Downtown Abbey films. excels at drawing still elusive but key older demos to theaters and broadening out from there as it did most recently with Oscar-winning The Holdovers.
The Vatican thriller by Edward Berger (whose All Quiet On The Western Front took the Best International Feature Oscar in 2023) and starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini opened to a sweet $6.5 million at about 1,750 theaters. The kicker is that some 77% of the audience is over 35 with the biggest chunk (44%) being 55+, a rare feat.
The title refers to the ancient tradition that sees Cardinals from across the globe gather sequestered behind Vatican walls to elect a new Pope when the previous Eminence expires.

We sat down with the cast and crew of Your Monster to discuss the romantic-comedy.
Four years after releasing the short film Your Monster, Caroline Lindy is bringing it to the big screen this holiday season. Your Monster is a multi-genre story about a woman attempting to overcome life and love while speaking to a monster in her closet. We sat down with writer/director Caroline Lindy and the film’s stars, Melissa Barerra, Tommy Dewey, Edmund Donovan, and Kayla Foster.
Your Monster is a breath of fresh air in the rom-com space that doesn’t follow the same typical tropes we are used to seeing. Lindy’s script is refreshing, and her attention to detail in developing Laura (Barrera) allows audiences to relate to her arc while also rooting for her. Barrera, who acts, sings, and dances her way into our hearts, continues to show she is a bonafide star.

While many of the animated films that dominate the awards conversation are studio-produced, there are usually a few indie contenders that shine through. This year, that title belongs to Adam Elliot’s devastating Memoir of a Snail — the claymation filmmaker’s second feature after Mary and Max. While it can be incredibly difficult to watch at times, Elliot’s movie is poignant and consistently beautiful, making it a must-see for animation enthusiasts.
Memoir of a Snail Review
Memoir of a Snail tells the story of a woman who grew up after being separated from her twin brother in the foster care system, having to face all the joys and tragedies of life by herself or with the companionship of other kindred souls she meets along her journey. If it’s not clear, this isn’t your typical family-friendly animated film, having a much darker story and more mature themes than...

In Melissa Barrera‘s new fairytail-esque musical horror comedy, she plays a beauty who embraces her inner beast.
Ahead of Your Monster‘s Friday premiere in theaters, the actress told Deadline she was inspired to take the role in writer/director Caroline Lindy‘s feature debut because the character ultimately learns to “not make [herself] small in the eyes of other people” through her romance with the titular beast.
She knows that struggle all too well, having been fired from her starring role as Sam Carpenter in the Scream franchise last year after expressing support for Palestine in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Barrera remains “very grateful and honored” to be still considered a scream queen by fans of the franchise, as well as her roles in Bed Rest (2022) and this year’s Radio Silence horror comedy Abigail. “I think the horror fandom is...

From its iconic characters to its lines that have entered the cultural zeitgeist, there are few horror franchises as influential as Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s Scream meta-slasher series. So let’s take a look back on all of the films and see where they stand – here are the Scream movies ranked!
6. Scream 3 (2000)
Ahhh the black sheep of the Scream franchise. Even as the clear worst entry, there’s still a certain charm to the third film. The Hollywood setting (dictated by the Studio after the Columbine shootings) really fits in well with the movie-centric series. Sure, the mismanaged killer and ghost mom portions are a little strange. Plus those Jay and Silent Bob cameos don’t exactly help matters. But this provides us Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley doing their thing. And, even if it doesn’t work, they connect it with all the films...

Just as its female lead is letting her inner rage come bubbling to the surface, the movie Your Monster, about this young woman, is also crying out from the inside to become a full-blown Broadway musical and not just the cult midnight movie it inevitably will be.
A sometimes awkward combo of horror/rom-com/musical elements that don’t always mesh perfectly but still blend well enough makes writer-director Caroline Lindy’s own feature-length adaptation of her short film a fun ride, as well as a terrific showcase for its stars Melissa Barrera and Tommy Dewey. In some ways it is also reminiscent of the current Demi Moore-Margaret Qualley horror comedy The Substance from director Coralie Fargeat, which also finds its main character going deep into herself in order to change the trajectory of her life all the way to a desperate and stunning denouement on a theatrical stage (albeit...

While I advocate for nontraditional rom-coms with a bloodthirsty bite, Your Monster struggles to tame mismatching tones. It's a hairy concept — what happens if your childhood boogeyman has a crush on you? Filmmaker Caroline Lindy approaches "Beauty and the Beast" meet-cutes from a horror protagonist's perspective, but bubbly cuteness detrimentally outweighs the script's darker leanings. Date night sweetness and flesh-torn grotesqueries don't play nice together, which is a downer as the film fails to unify its hybridized approach. The best genre romances find harmony between warmed hearts and spilled guts, while examples like Your Monster fail to earn monstrous moments.

The trick to genre-mixing within a movie is making sure all the disparate parts are equally great. With the anticipation around ‘Scream 7‘ already high, there’s buzzing excitement that Patrick Dempsey might return to the franchise. Known for his role as Detective Mark Kincaid in the 2000 installment, Dempsey’s character played a significant part alongside Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott.

In a recent development, with Campbell confirming her return for the upcoming movie, the stage seems set for Dempsey to possibly reprise his role.

With a seventh installment of the Scream franchise underway, Dempsey confirmed he is in talks to reprise his role.
“I’m waiting on the script,” Dempsey said on the Today show.
Dempsey’s Mark survived Ghostface’s attacks in Scream 3, and in 2022’s Scream, it is revealed Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott has married and had three children with him.
“There has been a conversation about it,” he added. “I haven’t seen anything yet. So, we’ll see what happens.”
Dempsey recalled working with Campbell again on Grey’s Anatomy in Season 9, playing Derek Shepherd’s sister, Liz.

Caroline Lindy’s Your Monster has what it takes to be catnip for a genre fan on paper: monsters, music, and Melissa Barrera. Yet, despite a likable lead performance and a premise that seems to be promising, Your Monster ends up being a disappointing film full of half-baked ideas. Although there is certainly an audience for this, it lacks the mainstream appeal that a high-concept indie like this needs to succeed.
Your Monster Review
Adapted from Lindy’s short of the same name, Your Monster follows an actress struggling to put her life together after a break-up as she finds unexpected companionship in the monster who has lived in her closet since childhood. In many ways, the premise seems like it would lend itself to a grown-up, horror-comedy version of Beauty and the Beast, but there’s too much “beauty” and not enough “beast” for it to work.

Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon at the helm. But then Ortega allegedly asked for a substantial pay raise – and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. Then Barrera was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Landon dropped out the of the project soon after. So Scream 7 has been re-developed, Campbell has signed on to return as franchise heroine Sidney Prescott, back in the lead role – and her Scream (1996) co-star Matthew Lillard has confirmed that if he were asked to reprise the role of killer Stu Macher,...

Right from its opening minutes, Your Monster is walking a tightrope. It somehow manages to keep a light touch through a sequence where aspiring Broadway star Laura (Melissa Barrera) is diagnosed with cancer before her partner Jacob’s (Edmund Donovan) new musical can come to the stage with a role specifically written for her. Jacob, though, doesn’t have the spine or stamina for being a caretaker, and dumps Laura while she’s in the hospital, leaving the poor woman calling after him while attached to her chemo bag.
To writer-director Caroline Lindy’s credit, she pulls it off in the first act, especially with the sequence that follows, with Barrera committing to the comedy in all the drama as Laura eats her feelings. Barrera is Your Monster’s trump card, with Lindy pulling a lively performance out of her while still keeping Laura feeling like a real girl trying...

The next Scream movie is scheduled to begin filming soon (possibly by the end of the year), and a new casting rumor doing the rounds online is claiming that McKenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) is in talks to join the cast.
According to Daniel Richtman, Grace is up for the role of Sidney Prescott's (Neve Campbell) eldest daughter, Tatum.
We also have confirmation that Courteney Cox will reprise her role as Gale Weathers. The Friends alum had previously stated that she hadn't officially signed on, but has now revealed to US Magazine that Gale will be back after coming very close to death (every one of those 356 knife wounds clearly missed her vital organs) in the previous movie.
"I’m the longest running Scream queen, so I guess I can’t stop now,” said the actress.

It’s an exciting time for ‘Scream’ enthusiasts as production gears up for the latest installment, rumored to start by the end of this year. The buzz around ‘Scream 7’ is building, especially with the news that McKenna Grace, known for her role in ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,’ might join the cast as Sidney Prescott’s oldest daughter, Tatum.
Daniel Richtman has fueled this speculation with his claims about Grace’s potential casting. Meanwhile, Neve Campbell is set to return as Sidney Prescott, and she’s not the only familiar face making a comeback. Courteney Cox confirmed to US Magazine that she will reprise her iconic role as Gale Weathers, having narrowly escaped death in the series’ previous film.
Kevin Williamson, stepping in as the new director, alongside Campbell announced that the movie, for now called ‘Scream 7,’ is set to premiere on February 27, 2026.
We’re told to expect dual storylines in this sequel.

It’s spooky-season which means it’s time for chilly weather, falling leaves and, of course, horror movies. We’re celebrating the genre by honoring those that make it so special with a countdown of the greatest scream queens working today.
7. Anya Taylor-Joy Robert Eggers hates his debut film The Witch starring Anya Taylor-Joy
Anya Taylor-Joy took over the high-octane, adrenaline-fueled world of Mad Max with this year’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, but its her work in the terrifying world of horror that gets her on this list. Starting with Robert Eggers The Witch, the talented young actress went on to showcase her skillset in the genre through a wide range of films while working with some of the most talented filmmakers in the business. Split, Last Night in Soho and The Menu are prime examples of what makes Anya Taylor-Joy a true scream queen.

Returning Scream star Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott) and new director Kevin Williamson recently announced that the seventh movie - which is seemingly being referred to as Scream 7 (ditching the Roman numerals) for the time being - is set to hit theaters on Feb. 27, 2026, and we may now have a better idea of what to expect from this latest instalment in the long-running slasher franchise.

It feels like we have a steady stream of scream queens right now, with the likes of Mia Goth, Samara Weaving and Melissa Barrera all eligible for a crown. But we don’t have many going for the scream king title. Really, the biggest name that comes to mind is Finn Wolfhard, but even he isn’t sure he’s deserving.
When People asked him about the so-called “scream king” designation, Finn Wolfward replied, “That’s such a huge compliment….I’ve never heard that before. You’re the first to say it, but that’s really nice. I’m not sure. I don’t know if I’ve done enough horror movies yet.” This coming from the guy who seems to have made a pretty good living so far in plenty of horror and sci-fi fare, including the It movies, the most recent Ghostbusters entries and Floria Sigismondi’s The Turning.

Neve Campbell is confirmed for Scream 7, that’s now going to be in cinemas in February 2026. More here.
Following the release of Scream VI in March of 2023, it seemed like the overall franchise was back on its rails. The directing team of Radio Silence had put together another hit, and the cast were expected to return for Scream 7, which should have begun filming later that year.
Still, strike action in Hollywood put paid to that. But so did a series of self-inflicted wounds. Neve Campbell had already bailed from the series over a low pay offer for Scream VI, and then Melissa Barrera was fired from the film over her social media posts supporting Palestine.

“Scream 7,” the beleaguered next entry of the iconic horror franchise, has set a premiere date. On Tuesday, star Neve Campell announced that her return to Woodsboro will open in theaters on Feb. 27, 2026.
